Visual of it off: Hard to say. Yes it looks quite bad, but as you say, how common will it be to climb stairs or slopes. I wonder how bad it might look in the sloped street of SL. On the other hand, how much did it improve the regular walk to turn it off? I don't recall it looking too bad. Skating perhaps. The turn anim looks fine to me; only problem is he sometimes does instant 180 resets back to original orientation without any transition (shoot a walker with a water arrow).
  2. Dayum! I know I repeat this too much, but I'm always happy when new quality textures arrive, and keep hoping some day they replace all of the bad-to-mediocre ones, so the TDM library, and thus the missions, include nothing but the best stuff.
  3. That's by the Thievery team IIRC. That bedroom shot is yummy.
  4. Stumpy pretty much stated a decent rule of thumb: if it can't be made in DR, make it in something else. For example, a high level of detail. Beyond that, I recommend making everything you can in DR and making them prefabs, because that leaves them easily adjustable (size, textures, new geometry) for everyone who has DR; a model does not. Edit: and what he said! ^
  5. I love T2 but cannot agree with this: In Thief scenes, mappers try to keep poly counts below what, 750? TDM scenes can contain hundreds of thousands if not into the millions of dynamically lit polys. If you're talking about assets, the community needs to step up and add 'em. A small team of part timers can't do the work of a community of thousands. And the skill of designers working on maps for either game does not determine the capabilities of the engines.
  6. Eh, I don't know. A lot of the old interviews with id about the departure (i.e., firing) of Romero, especially those by Paul Steed if I remember correctly, make it quite clear that Romero was a goof-off who contributed little more than a creative idea now and then, the rest of the time coming in late, going home early (typical workday at id (at least from the brief inside look I got) is noon to 4am, 6-7 days), and gaming in his office in between. Carmack has even been rather blunt about this too. Was Romero doing research? Fostering creative flow? In some sense, of course, and I think he gets credit for that. But meanwhile, the other guys were busy doing the hard stuff. Admittedly, hearsay. Doom 1 and 2 weren't exactly Ultima Underworld. Eidos should've been more involved/aware in "making us Romero's bitch" than just blindly throwing money into a hole.
  7. My vote is it's best off completely. If it's only in select areas, that still doesn't stop resentment from following a poster around. Let everyone just speak as it was before that system arrived. +1 There, I just backed up my own comment.
  8. It's pretty crazy to realize Eidos had/has Thief, Hitman, Tomb Raider, Deus Ex... Several of the best games out there (and at least one massive cash maker), and then to try and reconcile that with the whole "let's support Romero and oops! now we have to close down Looking Glass" thing.
  9. You actually succeeded at the last mission? Whew. That's where I quit some years ago. I did find a walkthrough, and plan on either finishing it with it, or watching the walkthrough enough to enjoy it. I bought, but haven't started Hitman 2 as a result of not yet finishing the first, and having no saves really puts me off. Though, I think H2 relaxes that a bit. I should give it a go. Haven't played my wolfenstein or Farcry yet though either, and I'm about 1 day into STALKER. Ugh, not enough time. Oh and I bought the Penumbra full set. Nice. I just got through a gate with an area with a bunch of dogs (for reference if anyone who's played is reading). Enjoying it, though it's quite unsettling.
  10. That is sweet. They clearly have a groundskeeper.
  11. There's another manual method for splitting patches too: http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Patches&section=7#Other_References
  12. "You are" = "You're." (I wouldn't normally say anything but "your" has been used instead probably a dozen times already. /QA sweep of thread!)
  13. Still staying mostly out of this, but a correction here: actually, crime rates are higher among the religious than the non-religious, and this includes divorce rates. You can find statistics online for verification. Who knows, we could be praising Sol System President Gene Roddenberry by now.
  14. Hm. I don't see it in keyboard shortcuts; I always assumed it was default. For me, MMB (and hold) in ortho turns the cam, and ctrl-MMB will move the cam. Anyone know if this is default or where it's configured?
  15. Not going to jump into this, but logical fallacy always bothers. It is basic logic (I don't mean in the "I'm so smart!" sense, but rather in the sense of applied logic principles) that the burden of proof isn't on the shoulders of the one denying; it's on the shoulders of the one claiming. For the applied reason: take a college level logic course; it will be demonstrated why this is necessarily the case. For one real-world, simple reason: anyone could claim anything (bigfoot?) and then it would be the job of the listeners to disprove the claim.
  16. Really good stuff; hope the volume levels can be fixed without noise, and that she keeps it comin'. I can picture it already. "Huhhh, I can't wear this dress out again! It's horri..." *THUMP!* Sorry m'lady, just passing through.
  17. Yep, I've been assuming that's a bug-feature (in that it's probably unintented and doesn't completely work right, but is cool when you need it and it does work). Maybe that can be made to fully work. Yep again: Ctrl-MMB in the ortho view to cause the cam view to jump to that position (within just those axes represented on the ortho). For the opposite, I select a brush in the cam view, then ctrl-tab three times (I only show one ortho view, so this cycles back to XY or whatever I was using) to center my ortho view on the selected object.
  18. I'd probably disable the rotoscope myself (unless that's a briefing maybe?) but that architecture is drool-worthy-gorgeous.

Wow! Glad you pointed this map out, I missed mention before. Incredible work Arcturus! I'd comment more but I'm going riding atm. Edit: You can get some weirdness by first hitting them with water (they take notice and start looking around spinning), then broadhead, sometimes -- he came at me and got stuck within me, couldn't get out.
  20. A mission requiring this feature would have to be very careful with that requirement, as this is not really a supported 'official' feature, but more of a fun thing thrown in with some possible use (if I understand the original intention correctly).
