  1. OK. I answer in the other thread, as this is not really the right forum.
  2. (I posted about the timer in the other thread - ignore this if you already answered there) What about iD's PostEventMS() method? Is this suitable?
  3. Didn't notice these in the models needed thread. I do have that list and will work on it. These would be mechanical? equiptment? Anyway, stuff like beakers, bunsen burners, ect... Anway, just asking for thoughts, maybe some links to pics? Ideas you've had, concepts.
  4. I moved the previous discussion of treasure chests to this thread so it's easier to find.
  5. The insanity continues . . . As some of you know in another thread I bought a satellite a135-s4527 laptop for $769: Then I added an m-audio firewire 410 for $299: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FireWire410-main.html This thing is awesome! It works on my laptop even though Vista drivers are not available yet (installed the drivers with compatibility mode with XP SP 2) It can be powered by a 6 pin firewire connection (currently like this on my desktop) so I can keep my ac adapter with my laptop. This thing already saw some action over the weekend because my sister wanted me to record audio from some video tapes. I was worried about it because reviews on the internet said the drivers really sucked but so far it works excellent. Today I bought the MXL 2001/603 anniversary pack (two condenser mics) for $99. http://www.mxlmics.com/condenser_mic/condenser_index.html I've been reading positive reviews about these mics so I'm looking forward to working with them I'll probably need a gig bag to hold all this stuff, as well as pop filters and shock mounts . . .
  6. I think we can unsticky this thread as well as the other one "Latest Release Available now". Maybe we can have a single announcement thread with the link to the darkradiant.sourceforge.net website? Same goes for the sticky thread in the Level Editing forum (which I think still says 0.8.1). (Ideal would be if Orbweaver and me could have thread-editing (moderating) rights for this forum so that we can update these threads on our own.)
  7. How can you say that, when gun control is already working so well in other countries? This is like, the third or fourth time you've blatantly ignored that fact, and I fully expect you to do it again. The most violent thing I've ever seen is a street fist-fight. The only guns I've ever seen were my dad's hunting rifles and police with their pistols on their hips and I've never once seen them out of their holsters. That's a random Australian person's view. Compare that to the experiences of the people from the US in this thread.
  8. Sorry, kindof posting back and forth between this and another thread. I have all the files set up, if you could just take an in game look for asthetics. I'll resize and whatnot later. I've been trying to add transparencies but not having luck seeing it in editor or modelviewer. I thought maybe it might show in game? That's an old shot too, I redid the textures last year, after that pic was taken. The transparent version of that is in my last T2 FM TTLG(Thru the Looking Glass), available at thiefmissions.com.
  9. I've just checked out the latest version of the dialog, and it has certainly come a long way. A few very minor GUI points: 1. Numerical entries are generally better implemented as spin buttons, which allows you to easily increment or decrement the value as well as type in a new one. The hour/min/second boxes are a good example of where spin buttons would be useful. 2. I'm not altogether sure that listing the stim numbers in brackets is a good idea -- I can imagine questions like "Why does it say 'Timer (18)'? Are there 18 stims of this type? Does the timer last for 18 seconds?" etc. I can however see that this information might also be useful to some, particularly for custom stim types. 3. You could probably ditch the "Add stim" and "Add response" context menu items, they behave in a rather non-standard fashion (adding a new default item at the end and jumping to it) and there is already a very obvious way to add new items. 4. I would just put "Deactivate", "Delete" etc in the context menus, rather than "Deactivate Stim", "Delete Response" etc. It sounds trivial, but minimising the amount the user has to read is always a good idea. Note that I haven't actually read the entire thread, so it is possible some of these have already been discussed.
  10. I'm currently working on an adaptation of the wall oil lamp (http://www.mbmafrica.co.za/accessories/enlarge/o1c.htm), and I'm hitting the 2000 polys. On another thread, I've read that small objects should be around 250 polys. So how many polys should I go for, for a lamp?
  11. There is nothing wrong with cheating in a single-player game. But that doesn't change the fact that unlimited saves are cheating. Players should be able to access unlimited saves, but only through using a cheat cvar. I can't remember where, but I've already seen entire articles suggesting this approach in MMO design forums. Except, they went even further, suggesting a whole pyramid of different levels: For free, players get a basic MMO hack'n'slash game with collecting items, slaying dragons, going on quests, maybe basic crafting, etc. If they purchase a subscription, they also get to buy and sell tracts of land, construct buildings, craft and sell advanced items, etc. If they purchase a premium subscription, they get to be royalty, and tax the land-owners in their kingdom, or recruit armies, etc. The general idea, was that since a player who wants to be king depends on a large range of other players to be their subjects, they should effectively subsidize the other players' subscriptions as RL payment for them pretending to be mere adventurers/peons. Even an inn-keeper or a blacksmith needs other players to pretend to be clients, so even they should subsidize adventurers' subscriptions to some extent.
  12. Yep, agreed, there's should definitely be room for a one-liner. What would you suggest as a catchy description? "open-source Doom 3 level editor" or specialised Doom 3 editor for the Dark Mod? I'm not very good at these titles, obviously. You mean the icon that goes along with the executable? I can look into this, I think I had such an icon software some time ago, I'll have to dig through my software folder. Let's see if my creativity has run out for today. I'm in a split mood, the page is public after all. I don't know if it would it cause any problems, but I can of course go Komag's way and put up a non-linked page which is referenced within these forums only.
  13. Well, it's probably not unimportant to the people in this thread posting full-page treatises on the issue. Not only that, but if we don't "officially" say where zombies come from, what happens when the mod is released and a mapper makes a map where the plot revolves around the fact that zombies are actually created by magical inventor excrement? If the map is accepted as "official" then that explanation becomes part of the official setting. And how can it not be accepted, since it doesn't contradict anything official? Anyway, I'm not arguing for a particular point of view here, just that it's going to be very difficult to manage, and I imagine the TDM setting will ultimately have many inconsistancies--just as the Thief universe does, for that matter.
  14. That is clearly the case. Our goal is to make the TDM universe as rich and believable as possible, and that necessitates lots of people thinking they are right when they aren't. It would be nice to create a consistant setting for TDM, and we're going to put some effort in that direction, but there are two pitfalls. One, we first have to come to an agreement of what the "official" setting of TDM might be. As this thread demonstrates, there are widely varying opinions on something as basic as where zombies come from. Some of the biggest and most raccous debates we've had internally have revolved around what should or should not be appropriate for the setting. Should there be guns? Should steam-bots be magically-powered? Are mages common or uncommon? Is the Church more powerful than the local Nobility or vice-versa. etc, etc. Coming to firm agreements on those issues is virtually impossible. The second issue is that, even if we could come to agreements about the setting, there is no way to force mappers to stick to those rules. If we say there are no flying zombies, and some mapper decides to put some in his map, what can we do, other than call it an "unofficial" map? The more well thought-out (and thus restrictive) the setting, the more ideas mappers won't be able to use without making an "unofficial" map. And if "unofficial" maps start becoming the norm, then is there much point to having an official setting in the first place? That's why we're trying to strike a (very difficult) balance between a setting that is believable and consistant, and yet at the same time not restrictive.
  15. A lesson you and oDDity both need to learn is that not all fallacies are equal, and context matters greatly. Most insults (or rather, name-calling) are not ad hominems, and as far as fallacies go, ad hominems are rather tame. Besides, a valid argument need not rely on all its premises to stand. You can be rude and abrasive when you know you're right, and oDDity has adequately supported his arguments for limiting saves--just not in this thread. He has every right to restate his opinions without providing a treatise every damn time. I'm rather surprised you took offense to such a clearly hyperbolic statistic when it was in no way directed towards you as a person, nor having any qualification that would single out you as actually being in that 99% (except perhaps actually being a cheater--in which case you have no right to take exception). What gives? The funny thing about generalizations is that they're generally wrong. Beauty is objective, and so is fun. There are set of rules describing what makes each that way, but there's plenty of room for variation.
  16. If you intend to watch this movie, don't read this thread, because it contains spoilers. On weekend I was watching this movie. Actually, when I read the plot overview I already knew that this movie will be quite ridicoulous, but anyway, I thought it might still be some nice action movie. The plot is that the sun will die in about 50 years, and a spaceship is sent to the sun with nuclear explosives, which should be fired into the sun in order to re-ignite it. Well, that plot has big holes even from that short description, so there is not much point in digging into that anyay. Aside from that, it would still make an interesting enough plot to make a good enough action movie out of it. I was quite dissapointed though, when the story turned into yet another Zombie/Crazy scientist type of movie. It worked like this, that they found, along their way, another spaceship which was stranded. This spaceship was on the same mission but failed and thought to be lost. Of course they had to investigate it, and so they traveled over to this previous spaceship. It was of course empty, because everybody died. The food would have lasted about 4 years and the second spaceship arrived about seven years later. Of course if the crew is decimated it might last a bit longer then the projected four years, and lo and behold, one of the crew survived. The team didn't know this, and so this loner sneaked on board and started to kill all the team members because he became crazy and wanted to do gods will (or something like that, I didn't really fowllow anymore after it became THAT cheesy). The major gripe that I have with this plot is, that it seems to be a tendency in hollywood movies to introduce unneccassary violence to "spice up" a movie, even if the basic story would already yield an interesting enough scenario. In this case it would already have been quite interesting to see how they actually tried to get near the sun and overcome all the problems that this would include. Instead the writers had to introduce this zombie like character to turn it into a kill fest. Ist it really the case that hollywood doesn't trust a good story to make money, or do they simply have so many bad actors, that this wouldn't work anymore? I remember another movie, where the same happened. Descent. It was a story about a bunch of women doing extreme sports, and they discovered an unknown cave that they started to explore. Then because of a small earthquake, they get trapped inside the cave and have to fine another way out. Same problem here. The story itself would already allow for an interesting claustrophobic movie, but what did these idiot writers do? There were some zombies living in the caves and they killed the womens. Wow! What an imaginative twist! I'm really dissapointed in such movies, because instead of telling an intersting story, it seems that they all try to deterioate into quite unneccessary violence instead of focussing on the problems that are already there because of the setting.
  17. What the heck are you talking about? Looks perfectly normal to me. I'm at the office today aswell and I didn't have to login, I browsed the forums from home before I went to work. No problems at all. Can you do me a favour and either upgrade your Firefox (if you don't already have the newest version) or try another browser, like Opera. Anyway, don't you use the password manager in Firefox? In Opera I only have to press Ctrl+Enter to be logged in to a website if I've saved the password.
  18. Ah, I just posted in the other thread but confused the names. Well, I downloaded the movie, but I can't watch it. Which codec is it? BTW: I don't think the clock looks bland. Reminds me a bit of an old B/W movie, and the style fits as well, so it still looks good.
  19. Baddcog is Schwaa from TTLG. You must not have seen the discussion in the public forums. Anyway, baddcog/schwaa applied for contributor status. His past work in the thief community speaks for itself, no introductory period needed.
  20. I can understand that, but with my radiation example, the "taint" of the land would be radioactive material. Besides, when I wrote my explanation of necromancy as radiation, I didn't intend it to be pseudoscience. Instead, I intended necromancy to be a magic analogous to radiation, and perhaps even replacing it. It still behaves much like ordinary radiation, but also just happens to raise the dead. I like that idea. I want that idea in game--eventually. I suggested that these infected zombies are only one type of zombie. The first type is the above, the second the infected, and the third I mentioned was the real-world voodoo zombie. Who says our zombies have to fit in only one stereotype? Oh. I haven't actually seen the movie; I've just had every goddamn frame spoiled to me by everyone and their grandmother. Still, it's bloody ridiculous. That does make sense, but I've always thought of liches as being somewhat anonymous, that is, unless they have managed to gain significant infamy/notoriety in life/unlife. Liches are essentially the final stage of a necromancer--a man who has quite literally sacrificed everything for his art. Liches strike me as naturally being loners. In life, they secluded themselves from society (if they were not outright ostracized) because of what they did. In death, they avoid society because of what they have become. As powerful as they are, they are still vulnerable to a properly equipped foe (holy water, etc), and there is no disguise they can take. A lich would only risk his unlife venturing into society if there is something significant for them to gain (read: MacGuffin), or if they have reason to be so confident or bold (i.e., the villain). Vampires, by contrast, blend almost imperceptibly into society, with rare literary exception--indeed, they are almost always presented as being socialites. They tend to group into covens (or at least, they tend to collect sires), and they enslave humans to do their bidding. They're almost always extremely powerful (more than a match for a lich), and even younger vampires are still very powerful. All in all, in gameplay terms, vampires tend to lend themselves to pure cheese (unless of course you're playing as one). If a mapper insists on having a vampire, I'd much rather him keep it off-screen. I really don't see an acceptable solution, except to outright exclude vampires. Integrating them into TDM would require either severely altering them (to the point that everyone hates because they're no longer really vampires) or resigning ourselves to cheese. Vampires can't be included in any sort of general way in TDM; they really only can be given a proper treatment by a mapper. By "main universe," I am referring specifically to a potential TDM campaign--which is what this thread is oriented around. Besides, we have no control over what outside mappers put in their maps, nor should we necessarily want to. If a mapper wants vampires in his map, who am I to stop them? Sounds great. I had an idea for a map where the player would be betrayed and thrown into the arena (perhaps as a more "lenient" punishment than torturing the thief). The first day at the area, the player would be searched, having to figure out a way to hide his lockpick, and put into a day-long "rigorous training session" (basically a chance for the player to scope out the place a bit and if need-be practice combat). Each day, the player would be forced to fight three battles of escalating difficulty, immediately being thrown back into his cell afterwards. To beat the mission, the player is simply required to get out of the arena alive and recover their equipment, either by battling their way to freedom or by escaping into the countryside. Of course, on expert, the player is still required not to kill anyone.
  21. God bless the weekend, I finaly got around to do something. comp-music, the water sounds are lovely, very well done. Also thanks for the re-upload of the arrow sounds. I'm really sorry about not updating the list, but I've been focusing on the request list - which I'll update today. sparhawk, you can post requests in the open sticky thread here. I'm sorry about the confusion with the stickies. I want to finish the request list first before working on the finished sound list.
  22. For a sec I thought I was on the Oblivion forums
  23. That's inevitable, since we all have such stupid and arbitrary names on internet forums anyway.
  24. ???? There are so stupid ppl after all.... 1. You are calling ppl nerd because I wanted to install Thief to play T2X??? 2. Count your posts in the forum and then count the rests! Who spends most of his time next to a stupid PC screen? You may are an older member, so just count post percentage. Still you are one of the most nerdish 3.And you know what? I dont come each day here and write in every thread just to be "considered" and not forgetted 4. Also HELL I would bet my d!c& that my girlfriend seems a LOT better than your does, despite the fact mine should be "nerdish".... I have been seeing you throught the forums oddity, you do nothing but just complaining and nagging and swearing others! GET A LIFE! Stop pretending to be a smart alec! I can accept a different opinion and a justification for it, but certainly cannot accept a dump one playing it "somehow"... Gosh, some ppl here are even worse than ttgl's....
  25. Yeah, thanks! Schatten, can you update the list with these sounds from the other thread? I would have done it myself, but I don't know your colour coding, and I don't want to mess with your list.
