  1. Windows has already freaked because I took a couple things out of their slots. I'm going to try the IDE controller first. If that doesn't work I'll try swapping HDs and see what happens. What a way to spend a day.
  2. You could try the first(bootable) hardrive in that. winxp will freak though and this may mess your registry. Can you make a backup of critacal suff, set your second hd as primary install windows, and see if that wiorks?
  3. Wow - that is very impressive! BTW, I like this one: Note the rivets and the large round windows. It needs to look quite clunky if it's to be victorian.
  4. I haven’t posted any images, or got any work done today as I had to reformat my computer. I had a very nasty crash no doubt brought about by running dromed, doom edit, winamp, painshop pro, gimp, mozilla and powerdvd all at the same time. Yes a duel ( is it duel or dual? sorry to be thick) core cpu would be nice But the upshot of this is that the map I was working on, the backup, and strangely half the other files in my map dir were corrupted and windows refused to boot except in safe mode where it promptly crashed. To save several hours I just formatted and I now have everything up and running again. Now its not all bad as I, luckily, have a back up from last night so I just lost a little work today but on to the request. Can someone with knowledge of the archaic language of dos write me a .bat file, or rather just tell me how, that will make a backup of my map dir on start-up? I know how to set the start-up to work but I don’t know how to make dos backup a dir. Does anyone know? Thanks p.s. I wasn’t sure if I should post this in general or not
  5. This may be a overheating/damaged south bridge chip I get the north and south bridge mixed up but one of these contains the HD controler. If this is faulty you will get the stalls in windows as it drops the line as it were, and the startup problems. Then again as Dram pointed out the stalling could be a faulty driver install, fixable by a reinstall. Though that doesnt explain the hd not being detected. the only other thing I can think of that would explain all this is a flaky bios. Flashing it may fix the problem or give you a dead mobo if the chip is faulty rather than just the firmware being flaky.
  6. I've been having a number of computer problems the last couple weeks, which I think may be related to overheating, but I'm not sure. I've noticed now, however, every time Windows boots up, it gives me the following error report (in one of those, "send to Microsoft" screens): Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Any of our computer-savy members know what the heck this could be referring to?
  7. No it shouldnt cause any boot problems. This is an odd error. Do you have a windows cd handy? If so cop these two files to your c: drive X:\i386\NTLDR C: X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM X being your cdrom drive. Reboot and boot from the cd. It should ask you if you want to repair an instalation select yes next if I remember right it should ask if you want to do it automaticaly or go to the recovery console. Go to the console. type fixboot and hit return type fixmbr and hit returm Hopefuly that should work. Both of the above will mess up any linux bootloader you have though.
  8. Is this the boot drive? It may just need a reinstall of windows, but it does sound most odd. Does the drive click at all? Thinking about it the only time I have seen erors like that is when I overclock. What is your cpu temp? As it gets hotter more erros occur and progs fail. It may also be your memory as a dieing stick can do the same thing. I think the best approch is to do what you are doing. Disconnect the drive and see if the errors still occur. Its not a maxtor drive is it?. I ask as I have a box of Hd's next to me. It has two seagates a 20 and 40 gig, about five years old that still work, but are slow being udma 33. But it also has three maxtor drives all dead, none lasted more than six months.
  9. I haven't installed anything recently, but I've been having other problems that might have caused this. Most of the time when I boot up now, the process takes a long time, pausing at the IDE detection for a full minute or two. Sometimes the boot process stalls entirely and I get a 'boot device not detected' error. Other times Windows boots up but my drive D: isn't showing up. That drive's only three months old but I'm going to try disconnecting it and seeing what happens. Luckily there's only one important thing on that drive, which I hopefully can get off.
  10. Seasons Greetings Taffers! New Horizon here to spread Holiday Cheer on behalf of The Dark Mod team. Our members have all been working especially hard since the release of the Doom 3 SDK on October 15th, 2004. We are delighted with the thought of bringing an alternative Thief Style gaming experience to your Windows and Linux PC's. For anyone not familiar with Dark Mod, here is a little bit about us. Dark Mod aims to release an Editing Toolset to the fan community by way of the Doom 3 editor. This will be accomplished by performing a total conversion of the Doom 3 Editing tools into a Stealth oriented gaming platform, inspired by Looking Glass Studios "Thief" series. This will allow the community to begin producing "Thief" Style fan missions with plenty of variety in models and equipment to choose from. In other words, you makes thems Sneaksie missions as youse seesie fits to makes thems! Darkmod will include a few example missions with the Editors release to help explain the documentation. At a later date you should see either a campaign or series of stand alone missions from us to further demonstrate the possibilites of Dark Mod. Now, before I get to the surprise I want to answer a few questions that have been sent our way recently. 1. Is there a 3rd person view? Third person is not supported at this time, we wish to provide a solid first person gaming experience. This does not rule out the possibility of it being added at a later date, but our primary goal is to create a solid gaming platform first! 2. Is wall flattening included? As of this writing, it's being considered. 3. Will you have a central hub for missions, like the city in TDS? Since we will initially be releasing a toolset this will likely not be the case. Fan Mission builders may end up creating this on their own, or you may see one in a later release. While we do not dismiss TDS as a source for inspiration our primary guidance comes from the Looking Glass Thief games. 4. Are there more movement speeds beyond Run, Walk, Creep? Too early to say yet really. We do want to explore other options as we're not bound by Thief rules, but at the same time we want to retain a certain familiarity. 5. What equipment from TDS will be included/not included? You will see the basic toolset or variations thereof...plus a few surprises. Oh and YES, that does include rope arrows! 6. Swimmable water? Yes. Now, on to the surprise. This surprise has been worked on in secret for several weeks by our member of many talents Tyrot and our equally talented Lead coder Sparkhawk, who wrote the concept for what you are about to see. Everyone on the team has worked extremely hard since we came together and I am proud to have watched our team grow stronger and more focussed as the months have passed. The work of many talented team members has been put to excellent use for this present. I hope you all enjoy this gift to the community as much as we have. Happy Holidays YOU TAFFERS!! This one is for you. DARK MOD TEASER TRAILER DARK MOD HI-RES TEASER You will need the XVID codec to view this presentation.
  11. Windows XP 64 is atm only Professional ... I have Home.
  12. Yes, allow me to also highly recommend an Athlon 64 chip. I got a 3000+ last summer and it continues to be great - hopefully well into next year, and when things actually start being 64 bit... (windows XP 64 went gold recently)
  13. Hmm, interesting. I don't *have* any HD partitions. I have two separate drives. Actually, come to think of it, this morning when I booted up windows, my D drive wasn't detected. Rebooting several times didn't solve the problem, until I shut the machine off and started it up again. Then it was there, but I was getting this error message. I suppose that's the connection.... Here's the screen I'm getting. I tried two different solutions from the links above (the system restore solution and the adaware solution) but neither of them worked.
  14. depends on your budget but in general you can say that D3 runs better on nvidia cards: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/doom3_perf/page5.asp I've got a GeForce6800 and I'm quite happy with it - only problem is the temperature - they can get really hot! I also heard that D3 does/will (?) make full use of 64bit-processors, but I'm not sure on that one and whether you'll have to wait for a 64bit Windows to make use of it or not. that's why I put together this system last year: Asus A8V deluxe AMD 64 3500+ Leadtek GeForce 6800 1024 mb kingston ram (512x2 dualchannel) 160gb hitachi-ibm HDD I think it's still a quite powerfull system and I can play any current game in highest detail (except D3 ultra-quality because I haven't got a 512mb gfx-card^^)
  15. With the 1.3 patch, which I havnt heard off, it must come with the expansion? Here is the link for the win2000 drivers they are dated apr 5 http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/down...me=Windows+2000 the udate includes
  16. I store everything with unix linefeeds. This means that the textfiles have only 0x0a as a linefeed. Windows uses 0x0a 0x0d as linefeeds. Any decent editro can handle it but notepad is not a decent editor. Since we are using it this way all the time, we should stick to it. And it is easier this way to use all the files on Linux without conversion. Though I think that the linux version of D3 can probably handle both ways anyway.
  17. Here's the new layout. Builder - Builder faction specific textures. Castle - Generic castle textures, you know the drill. Castle_ruin - Old mossy crap and all the stuff you'd expect to see in an abandoned or ruined castle. Could also include regular castle textures reworked to make them look nice and neglected. Cathedral - Generic cathedral textures, unfactionized. Cathedral_ruin - Dunno if this is necessary, but I've thrown in in for the time being. City - Streets, facades, yellow windows, all the stuff you'll see from outside. Steampunk textures should also go in here. Mansion - Generic mansion textures. Mansion_Ruin - Same as castle_ruin, but with mansions. Nature - Natural textures. Leaves, roots, bark, and any other outdoorsy crap you can think of will go in here. Founder - Founder faction specific textures. Pagan - Pagan faction specific textures. Might eventually move some of the current set to mansion_ruin or castle_ruin. Set - Any texture that could be considered set pieces. Rugs, paintings, generic decals, and other miscellaneous textures will go in here.
  18. One thing i really liked was the concept artworks for thief 3, the painted and slightly cartoonish look to them. also in the game i enjoyed the break in some parts from trying to get mega graphics power and put some artistic style in (like the moonlight through the windows). I guess the way i've seen thief is more about the art and the 'hey that looks pretty cool' despite it not having half a billion poly's. What artistic stylisations (if any) are you wanting to apply to the base content?
  19. Shit, did'nt notice someone replied. Yeah it's fucking good. IMO I like it more then Morrowind because the whole plot is absolutely perfect and the game is (you'll like this oDD ) fucking hard if you don't use your brain. The swordfighting is nothing like in Morrowind (as in none of that "oh sorry, your longblade skill is only 10, you miss") cos you actually can parry attacks (if you turn off autoblock, you have to press the block key everytime an enemy is slashing - hard, otherwise you have to hold it to block them. It goes without saying that you cannot attack AND block at the same time) and you do not gain some gay "skill", you actually have to improve yourself (even the city guard are a challenge for the rookie). Think Thief 2 swordfighting, just fleshed out much more, and the feel is really realistic (none of that slash-as-much-as-you-can shit. You gotta time your attacks so as to hit the enemy when he's open). oDD, I must say that the puzzles in this game are superb (they really make you think, not the easy Morrowind crap like "...In Caldera an artist waits, a masterpiece he is to create..." - obvious!). So oDD, if I can recommend an old game which keeps atmosphere and tension, etc it's Redguard. You don't play a "hero" persay, (cos Cyrus (the guy you play as) has had his shady and bloody deals in the past) cos you are actually searching for your sister, Iszara. Man, the plot sucks you in like a black hole. I really recommend it. Check it out oDD, trust me, it's worth it. - in fact, download the demo and test it out if you want (but sadly it does'nt have all the voice acting and puzzles, but nonetheless) however, you gotta be willing, cos to get it to run on windows (that have no DOS cos Billy decided it) takes a bit of patience. It took me 3 hours to get working, but I could do it again in like 15 min (learned a bit (duh!)). EDIT: If you slash at your enemy lots, you leave yourself open and you get hit - it's good --Dram
  20. I know that usually it's better to port early, but in this case we can assume that most of the code will at least compile, because we are working within the confines of Doom 3. So the most problems we can expect with maybe some filesystem stuff (though that is abstracted by D3 already) and some compiler incompatibillities, but these are easier to sort out. I develop all my programs usually first on Windows and then port them over to Linux because MS Studio is much more convenient for development.
  21. I use Debian. Porting/testing the code on linux early will save hassles down the road. I can understand that dealing with Windows is more than enough work at the moment, but if you have the ability to at least maintain the linux compile, it would be well worth it.
  22. I use Linux, but currently I use only Windows for development. As Linux is my primary desktop I'm also interested in running TDM on Linux, so you can be sure that this will be ported. Which distribution do you use? At the moment we have not an urgent need for Linux testing, as we want to get one platform stable, but later on we sure can use some testers with different distributions. I have gentoo installed.
  23. That it appears in the portage tree doesn't say much about the legality. What you can install in the portage tree is only the official binary, as I explained above, but you don't get the full data from this. You still have to install the PK4 files yourself, because they are NOT included in theportage tree. I should know because I also use gentoo. There are other packages as well, where you can install a binary release of a game but you have to provide the extra files from your windows copy.
  24. Well Like I said I wasn't sure but it appears in the portage tree of Gentoo.. I on the other hand currently use Suse 9.2....Although I would like to convert over to gentoo just don't have the time... True It does suck as counting towards a windows game sale... At least I can Play it though happily on my desktop! Hopefully the sales problem will be corrected in the near future..doubtful about being near... just have to wait and see! roguetech
  25. to bad i have no samples on my hard drive. i had a windows fuck up with its boot seqence or some shit. so i had to reformat. but i will mess with dromed for few hours and see if i have the magic touch still.
