  1. First of all, sparhawk, for the last time, CHECK THE STICKY! I don't know how many times I've said it now. It explains all your questions. Argh! Anyway, game is meant for menu sfx (button clicks) etc etc, and yes, also info like objectives/player start blah blah. Why is frob_loot located in world? Again, check the design doc. EVERY frob sound is located there, so it's only logical to put loot there as well. After all, a loot item is an object like everything else, a drawer, an apple, a door, which each has a different frob sound. Also, remember that you all agreed to this layout a long time ago (which was drawn out by me and new horizon when we started the mod). And now that we where doing the big reorg a few weeks ago I even asked all of you to go through the design docs and see if there was anything you wanted to change. If no one says anything, I have to assume you are alright with it. Argh!
  2. Yeah totally - I was looking at this again last night, and all the knee popping is too violent, 3 times - both front leg swings, and the back swing on the right leg, as oDDity pointed out ages ago. Don't know how I overlooked those, they really need softening up.
  3. Thousands of people have been tortured and murdered in the name of religion, especially those who dare to contradict it (like scientists). When was the last time a war was started in the name of science? Neither do I, but apparently many people do - including the current president of the United States apparently. People are right to question whether people with such poor reasoning ability should be in positions of power.
  4. Virtually every so-called christian in the world, and certianly all Western Christians, are blatant hypocrites. They claim to be following the teachings of Jesus Christ and the bible, but what they actually do is pick and choose the easy tasks and ignore the rest. If you truely beleived that christ was the son of god, and followed his teachings, then you would strain every muscle to live your life the same way he did. He would have given his last penny to a beggar, he would rather have gone hungry himself that see someone else go hungry. His whole life was devoted to helping others with no thought for himself. Is that the way western christians behave? Is it fuck. Most of them live in swanky houses with all the modern comforts and a big bank balance, and sit watching the the news on huge widescreen plasma TVs about millions of starving people. The price of that TV alone would have fed one of those starving people for life. Christians don't follow the teachings of Jesus at all, they just do the easy stuff, but anything in the bible that might cause them discomfort or hardship in their lives, they completely ignore. A true Christian wouldn't spare a single thought for themselves, have not a single comfort, own not a trinket or gaudy bauble, or anything they didn't absoltuely need, and would devote their entire existence to helping others. Then there's the church as an institution. The amount of wealth the church has is astounding, but yet again they do little to help all the unfortunate people int he world. If they sold of all their assets they could stop literally millions of people from dying of poverty. Religion is just a joke. They even fool themselves into thinking that they're truely religious. Religous people don't really beleive in god at all. They kind of hope god exists, they're not sure, but they go aloing with it anyway 'just in case'. IF you really, truely beleived in god 100%, then you would devote every single second of your life to his every word, and the words of his son Jesus. You would not pick and choose which words you followed. It's not a fucking buffet.
  5. To me it seems like you didn't even read my last post - to have it your way, the FM authour would have to create an extra objective to fail them if they lost it before completing the mission. Unessecarily complicating things.
  6. Yeah that's what I imagined, pulling back the frog (haha, that is such a cool name, how did that come about? ) to get it the rest of the way out. Alright I'll rely on the speed to cover it up in that case. It's only the last few inches so it shouldn't be noticed I suppose.
  7. So yeah. I met him around new years, and talked a bit with him about the mod. Although he's a bit busy with university stuff, he'd like to help out. I know he can model, skin and animate. I think he works mostly with Maya, but also knows his 3ds. He put up some of his work here. Some of this is a bit older work, as far as I know the last thing he did was creating a virtual studio (for TV). He asked if he could have a smaller prop to model, just to see how things work out. So, what do you all think?
  8. Yeah the programmers are pretty adamant about putting in detailed collision for combat. Just last night on T2X, a hammerite cornered me in the doorway of a biulding, and I thought I got the jump on him as he was creeping toward me, but not quite, and before I knew it he took an overhead swing at me - *CLANG* my god, I was saved by the sign hanging above the doorway. I was running before the sound effect even finished.
  9. Isn't combat one of the last things we need to worry about? We already have a basic attack, and we won't be coding anything more sophisticated than that for some time.
  10. You're in PA? Hah, so my post probably looked like a direct attack. I assure you it was not. I love (what I see of) PA, which is the long riverfront stretch down 32. I'm there all the time. Damnit, on that note, could you please get your state to FIX THE TOWPATH! I spoke to the secretary of the DCNR and she told me, roughly, "The men from the government just came out last week [this was 8 months AFTER the FIRST flood]. I've seen how they work. First they have to assess, and then reassess. Then, they have to have a bidding war by contractors. Then the work will begin if it's approved. The canal won't be fixed for at least five years." Damn.
  11. I haven't had a chance to do a full checkout yet, but everything should be back to normal except for the broadhead.lwo Oddity uploaded last week.
  12. I think that the stories from the bible actually happened, but certainly not verbatim. I rather think that it is a mixture of storytelling to try to explain how things happened (like the Genesis) and stories about actual events that were blow out of proprotion to make a better story (like the flood). Nowadays we have a lot verifications, but back then nothing such was possible. And still if you see a movie from some events the movies are also made to make a better movie, not to make a more true report. Did the events on the Titanic happen as it was protrayed in the last big block buster? Certainly not, but it makes a good story. Just as an example. And in a few hundred years, the 'actual and accurate' reports will be totally forgotten, but movies will still be around, telling the same story again and again, and each time a little bit different, but always with a small core of truth.

    German ?

Hi there I'm from germany and my english is usually quite good. Just wanted to ask if you could have need of a translator once in a while, either for translatin manual or whatever into german or the other way around. Until now I've translated the Far Cry Manual so I've got a bit of experience. And one other thing...I love your mod up to now. The last Thief game sucked and I realy hope you can bring back the old style. Especially Rope Arrows ;-)
  14. I always think that timeouts and delays are a last ressort. You can always imlpement such things when you don't find a better solution, but most of the time it's just lazy design.

    Rope Arrow

Woah, I do not believe you are aware of all the things that would go o in such a situation. It is easy to wrap a rope around a hand and pressure on it will only tighten the rope around the hand, letting go however is still easy at the end of the swing b/c the pressure is lessened, but it would be impossible at the bottom. As to the "people would let go b/c of the pain" well there was a guy who died climbing when he fell with a rope that was wrapped around his arm and tore it off. If you have ever tied a clove hitch or any type of hitch you would understand what I am saying. You should actually appreciate what I did, which is solve the dillema of how this could be coded to actually reflect reality with minimum effort on the part of those involved. When I last climbed the Grand Teton, a few days before a guide had fallen with a rope wrapped around his shoulder and once again he did not "let go" it simply tore him apart, but if the rope is wrapped you are not going to "let go" until you have already born the brunt of the pain and basically destroyed your body's ability to grasp. So yes it is possible that after you dislocate your shoulder elbow, and maybe retain your flacid arm connected to your body then the rope might slip from your limpid grasp, but it will not come out at the point of impact.
  16. Ok, one last question. I need to know a little more about how D3 gets info about models. First, if I change the location of banner01.lwo to models/props/decorations/paintings/(or whatever), do I have to change the entry in the material file as well? Or is that tied to some setting in the model itself? I'm assuming the former but I don't want to mess things up. Second, does the model point directly to the .mtr file? In other words, if I renamed decorations.mtr to decorations_wall.mtr, would that mess up all the models that are referenced in that file?
  17. Ok, a few other things I've noticed. When working in the editor, calling up models gives you a list of all the TDM folders AND the Doom3 folders mixed together. The "models/weapons" folder has the broadhead.lwo as well as the pistol, chainsaw, etc. There is a "model/outdoors" folder that has a bunch of D3 stuff in it. The model/characters" folder has none of our characters, so where are they? Our beta-mappers have been bringing this up already, but it doesn't make any sense to have our assets mixed in with the D3 ones. I'm not talking about getting rid of the D3 ones, but ours should be in a separate, easy-to-find folder tree. Our textures are all located under a root "darkmod" folder, and I think we should do the same for our models. All the paths for our models would be "models/darkmod/etc. This would mean all of our models could be organized separately from the D3 ones. It also means every map using our models would be broken. What do people think about this? Edit: Things just got a little more confusing for me. While I can see that we have our own "models/weapons" folder, it doesn't show up for me in the editor--I get the D3 one instead. And our "models/chars" doesn't show up either, just the D3 "models/characters" Here's the list that comes up under base/models when I'm using the editor: Of these, only the first three are TDM. The one at the end is obviously Gleeful's (not sure why it's a separate folder) and the last Mansion one is full of .ase models that don't appear to work.
  18. Garrett is a recurring character very similar to Bond indeed. I think that most people have a sense of knowing his personality more than was revealed mostly because controlling him was more intuitive and had many more degrees of freedom than other game characters that existed up to that point. That last video inspired me that indeed a new athletic but not so magical (rope arrows) character would be nice who can jump and climb walls like in the video and has many more degrees of freedom than Garrett.
  19. Exactly. You are of course correct in saying that. Yes, Pluto is not considered an equal of Mercury, last I heard they were alternatively talking about having different 'grades' of planets.

    Coin Roll

It is pretty cool looking when you get it down right. I saw this video and learned to do it last year, and now I end up doing it all the time whenever I have a coin in my hand, thus getting many comments on how amazingly awsome it is.
  21. BAHahhahaha!! WTF?!??! HAhahhaha. I agree with Oddity, Garrett's had his day. the LAST thing i'd wanna see is Garrett running around in TDM. Quite honestly, he always seemed like a pussy to me. See, haha, going back to the james bond example... He never necessarily OPTED for a fight, but when he was presented with the beef, he always stepped up to the plate. I like the idea of having a theif that is trained similar to a ninja minus the honor. He doesn't want to be detected. less work. but if he is, he can handle himself because he's trained physically, and is effective with his weapons.
  22. Impossible to argue for restrictions or for open ended gameplay. The trick is to get the balance right between the two, depending on the game. It should be up to the FM maker whether BJing guards wll be allowed or not, anyway, so there's no much point arguing about on this day. I played UT last night. Probably multiplayer that keeps these shooters alive.
  23. Thief fanboys still exist because the franchise was still going last year. There have been 3 games released now. That tends to keep it going when you have a new game in the series to look forward to all the time.. Had there only been Thief 1 and nothing since that, do you think we'd be making TDM now, or there would be any but a few interested in it a fter 7 years? Long term communities exist for many shooters, like half life, doom and UT. Having an editor attatched makes far more of a lasting fanbase than gameplay variety.
  24. Yes I changed my opinion completely after writing that post and have been trying to figure out how to delete the message for the last 10 minutes. Maybe a goldish-yellow banner with black trimming and emblem? Sepia yellow is very much associated with steampunk, and black could represent the copious amounts of soot rising from their factories. Yellow also brings to mind ancient egypt where the freemasons stole much of their symbols from (the pyramid appears everywhere in their stuff). Plus black and light yellow brings to mind the old chessboard; perfect for the mind puzzles of the inventors. And yellow brings to mind smoking - I could imagine the inventors lighting up a pipe while thinking about their next invention. And coffee stains, having to stay up all night working... OK, enough yellow associations.
  25. With the help of computers I think it can become possible. At the last superbowl there were how many people? 200-400.000 right? And even in that many faces the face recognition software identified more then 20 seeked criminals. And that is only the beginning because the software will become better over time. Already computersoftware exists, that can anticipate what movements you make before you even know it yourself. There are only bits and pieces, but with ever more effecient software this will become more and more linked and can work together. That is another thing. If you have almost exclusive control over medias, and computer content, then how will the people unite to become such a mob? That needs organization. Even in WWII they already said that one big problem of the resistance was communication and organization. Of course. but it gets better over time, as engineers learn from their past errors.
