Custom Sound Shader

Hello there people!

 

According to http://wiki.thedarkm...Tips_and_Issues and http://wiki.thedarkm...nd_File_Formats I've converted two sound files for my mission to appear for a door's stadard sound. It works fine in Dark Radiant (I can find them in the sound list and play them) but ingame in my mission I only hear a short beep sound.

 

After messing with different sounds, different .ogg compressions and different .wav compressions I created a new little test map to start all over with. Again, all fine in Dark Radiant but this time I won't hear anything ingame when opening / closing the door. (not even the beep sound)

  • .wavs and .oggs were converted to different compressions (changed bit / kbits / mono, stereo / Hz)
  • soundshader file changed with several settings
    pop1

  • the sounds and the soundshader file are placed in darkmod/sound/kneipe(name of map)
  • sound shader file is named kneipe.sndshd
  • sounds are used on the door entity via snd_open and snd_close

I have tried for at least 2 hours now and I'm giving up. I just wanted to insert some simple custom sounds to my map but I can not get it to work - it's depressing. -_-

Hm, you said:

 

darkmod/sounds/kneipe(name of map)

 

but you soundshader says "darkmod/sound/kneipe" (sounds vs. sound!). That might be it.

Hey thanks for replying.

 

sorry it's "sound", always ^^

 

And in the console there is no error when using the doors in the actual mission (where you can here the beep sound).

In the test map where nothing happens it says "Couldnt load pop1.wav - using default" "Couldnt load pop2.wav - using default"

cant see why

Here's the console for the test map (without beep sound) and the mission in which I tried it at first (where the beep sound was heard).

 

It came out that the beep sound was created by this line:

WARNING: file <implicit file>, line 2: unknown token 'new'

 

because the shader was named 'new-open' and it got interprated wrong because of the '-'

As I changed it to 'newopen' it turned out like in the test map: In DR it works fine but ingame there is no sound ever heard.

The fact that the sound file was named 'door-open-1.ogg' (so with '-') is okay for the game, it only bitches if the soundshader name has '-' in it. I even changed the sound file name to 'dooroopen1.ogg' (yes with two o to find it precisely) and the the console said 'Couldn't load sound "dooroopen1.WAV" using default' (it says always .wav, no matter it is .ogg or .wav - I tried both file types)

 

Below there are the console printes (first: mission with beep; second: test mission without beep or any sound when using non-standard door sound file)

He's always begging for some .wav files that aren't even there..

 

I now made a speaker (like in http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Adding_ambient_Sounds_to_your_Map) in my test map.

 

The sound shader file says:

abc

}

 

The entity in DR says:

But in the console he says "Couldn't load abc.wav using stadard" which is wrong because there is no abc.wav. There's only tdm_ai_thug_dialog0101.ogg

 

This dialog file is from a score to settle where I looked up the sound shader file too. I don't know what's wrong on my side...

It looks like it can't find the abc shader at all, so it interprets "s_shader abc" as the name of a WAV file instead. This might happen if the your .sndshd file cannot be found for some reason, e.g. it is in the wrong place or has an incorrect file extension.

You were right OrbWeaver. I put the soundshader file one folder upwards (Doom3\darkmod\sound) and it worked out well.

What the heck.. in all tutorials they say "put the stuff in sound/yourmissionnamehere" and exactly THIS was the error that made me try and error for 3 hours because I relied on the tutorial assignments :wacko::wacko::wacko:

  • sound shader file (.sndshd) goes into /darkmod/sound
  • sound files (.wav / .ogg) goe into /darkmod/sound/missionnamehere
  • don't use '-' as sound shader name

Hm, I wrote that part for two of the tutorials you posted, and both say directly:

 

The soundshader should be placed in the "sound" folder. (Again, during testing, when you are running the game through the console, you can temporarily put it inside darkmod/sound.)

 

1. Use a custom soundshader, which you put in the "sound" folder in your .pk4 (or "darkmod/sound" when running the game through the console). Use the name of the entry in that soundshader for your ambient in the speaker's "s_shader" spawnarg key. In my case, I could have used "s_shader"/"ambient_frozen".

So I had a soundshader named "patently_dangerous.sndshd", inside "patently_dangerous.pk4/sound/patently_dangerous.sndshd"

 

I was going to clarify the tutorial that confused you to make that point specific, but they already seem pretty clear on it now. Soundshaders go inside the "/sound" folder.

 

Edit: If there is a line that directly confused you though, would you please quote it directly and link to it so we can clarify it. We've all been confused by ambiguous wiki language, so you're not alone in being frustrated! =)

 

And yes it's only the actual sound files (.wav & .ogg) where it's a good idea to put in a special sub-folder, as you say. (That's not a hard rule BTW, since you give the address directly in the soundshader slot you could technically put it anywhere; IIRC I think that's a rule of convenience & so you don't risk conflicting with a native Darkmod file that might coincidentally have the same name, so you use a folder with your mission name).

 

As for "don't use '-' as sound shader name", it might be relevant that "new" is an operator (it's in blue text) and you don't want to name objects with operator words. But it's probably best to keep names all letters and numbers anyway.

Hey demagogue, thanks for the good work (I mean that you overlooked the article, not that you've confused me with it :P )

 

Indeed, it was the line you changed in edit2. I thought the file had to be within the same folder as the sounds. The lines about placing the shader file into the folder above I couldn't remember sadly.

 

Your article is good - no fear! It is just that I read wiki articles and threads in the forums for about 80% of my mapping time because everything is so new to me and I occur many errors, which needs even more reading. At some point I just can't hold my concentration. On the other hand I misunderstand some things because it's all in english :laugh:

 

So hopefully I could point out clearly why this happened. I don't know if you believe me or if you think: "I simply am super retarded or what, but I just can't figure this shit out." (Tudor - the finest sentence in this forum ever) :D
