Flame particles

One thing I notice with the new flame particles is that the smoke doesn't always face up. When you drop a torch, the flame properly orients itself upwards, but the smoke goes sideways.

This is the part that controls the smoke....I can't see anything obviously different that would affect that, but I don't know much about particles:

gravity is the paramter that controls this. (the sparks in my replacement particles had the same problem).

That's because in this case gravity is relative to particle emitter not world. Another possibility is that the gravity value is so high that the particles dissipate before local gravity can take over? I know for the snow particles that if you turn the emitter the particles come out relative to the emitter but then fall to the ground still.

EDIT: I take that back, I see the value is for Gravity world.... very strange.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

I updated torchflame_new01 and torchflame_new01_small. I increased the gravity and set speed to zero. Also I had to lower the offset and change size of the smoke. It looks a bit different now.

It's only a model...

It looks a bit different now.

Hmm, thanks for fixing the smoke so that it raises up. I have to be honest though, I'm really not a fan of the new look. It seems like a LOT of smoke for a relatively small flame; far more than the previous version. It also seems to be coming from too low on the flame, originating almost right from the torch base itself. Is it not possible to keep the old look but just have it oriented up all the time?

Smoke has to start low (offset needs needs to be small), otherwise it will look like this:

I increased the fade in number. See how it looks now. Check how it looks on different backgrounds.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )
