Chat room for forum members

How hard would it be to implement a chat room for forum members..?

 

I have often wanted to chat live with my fellow taffers..

Trivial. Choose some quakenet (or other) IRC servers and form a channel there.

Then post here where it is. Once there are enough people on the channel, you can get a bot to the channel so it can give admin rights to the right people and so forth.

I think there was a Darkmod Irc once.. however i didnt remember it getting too popular.

 

I was on a project once where IRC often became a nice catalyst for progress, its much more immediate then forum. It can also be major distraction however

Personally I think a Teamspeak or similar system would be even cooler. That way, people can actually chat (instead of having to type). Somebody talked about setting this up a wile ago... don't remember who

I much prefer typing to speaking in a group chat situation. You don't have to worry about audio quality and configuration, you don't have to ask people to repeat themselves because you didn't quite hear what they said, you can edit what you write before you send it, and you don't have to take it in turns to speak or deal with people talking over each other or not listening while they're speaking.

 

I think this must be why a lot of geeks will happily use IRC even though they dislike group socialising.

I'll get Mirc'd up etc. But that said would still prefer the chatroom to available actually on the forum like I've seen on some other forums.
