Info: Architecture Terms

Arcady

Recommended Posts

I often find myself looking for images for design ideas, but I don't always know the names of things I'm searching for. As I come across these, I thought it wouldn't hurt to have a bit of a visual glossary here in case anyone else has the same trouble. Please let me know if this is redundant or unnecessary here.

Pilaster: A shallow rectangular feature projecting from a wall, having a capital and base and usually imitating the form of a pillar.

Quoins: Any of various bricks of standard shape for forming corners of brick walls or the like.

This is an excellent idea, it could help make searching for examples of architecture much easier.

A lintel can be a load-bearing building component, a decorative architectural element, or a combined ornamented structural item. It is often found over portals, doors, windows, and fireplaces.

A dormer is a structural element of a building that protrudes from the plane of a sloping roof surface.

Wiki entry material over here..

In the the forums, this will be buried after a while.

Some kind of "Architecture basics" article.

Most of us are not engineers or architects so some well written and nicely pictured crash course on basic architecture stuff would be great for mappers!

In addition, many people here aren't native english speakers, so having the terms with pictures as "description" is always a good idea.

Just keep the thread up, and I, if noone else does, can pack it into a wiki article.

FM's: Builder Roads, Old Habits, Old Habits Rebuild

Mapping and Scripting: Apples and Peaches

Sculptris Models and Tutorials: Obsttortes Models

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
