I wanted to download everything from CVS in a clear new folder yesterday, but after several hours I stopped the download because CVS started to download the old textures, which is imho a waste of time and traffic. my darkmod-cvs folder is already > 340mb!! I've no flatrate so it really does matter for me, if I download 300mb or 600mb - every mb-traffic costs ;) Can you please delete the old stuff sparhawk, so that I can finish my download? I don't think it'll cause any problems at all, because the files are just deleted on CVS and not on the machines of the members so the maps will still work.

Regarding the nametags I've to say that I'm not in favour of these. It looks a bit strange, when you look for example into the mansion/door folder and there is a mandoor01.tga and a mandoor01sh.tga - if everybody would use nametags we would end up with a door folder like that:

mandoor01bt.tga, mandoor01fi.tga, mandoor01re.tga, mandoor01sh.tga . sorry but that's complete bullshit imho  We're doing teamwork here, so does it matter who created a specific file? The result would be that everybody adds his nametag to anything, so our models wouldn't be called diningtable.lwo anymore, but diningtableatbt.lwo etc.

We had a big discussion about this already. I don't want to have to name them on my system, then sync with CVS and find out the names have already been used, then have to change the material files again. And I can guarruntee that somebody will forget and overwrite someone else's textures at some point.

It's not for recognition (though it's useful to know who did a texture if we'd like it modified). If you can think of another way to ensure people won't be using the same names, let me know.

well actually it's quite simple: you have a seperate CVS-folder and you download the stuff from CVS directly into it - nothing else goes into that folder. when you're working on new textures create a seperate folder (in your normal darkmod directory) textures/test/<here the usual file structure>

and write you material - test.mtr. when the work on the texture is done you check out CVS first and then you can check if the filename is already used or not. if it's not used yet, then you can copy your textures out of textures/test into /textures and simply use the replace function of notepad to replace the paths textures/test into /textures in the mtr. that may sound complicated, but it actually isn't - takes less then 1 minute.

If the filename is already used you rename your tgas from blahblahx.tga to blahblahblahx+1.tga and use notepad's replace function to fix your paths in the material-file.

that's the way I do it with all the textures and models.

And I can guarruntee that somebody will forget and overwrite someone else's textures at some point.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think CVS warns you before you can overwrite a file. And actually you should always do a resync before you commit something to CVS anyway.

What happens if I make changes locally to mansion_floor.mtr, and then update cvs and find someone else made changes to it since my last sync? Won't the updated file overwrite my local changes?

I don't think CVS will overwrite changes you make, it's designed not to do that.

That being said, I don't trust it 100% either so I keep a backup of any changes that I made, just in case.

And yes, it is a good idea to update CVS right before you put anything new in, on the off chance that someone else has been working on the same file as you.

It either merges the changes, or it warns you. But either way. If your local file doesn't match the CVS version then it will be wrong when you commit it anyway.

that's why you have a seperate CVS folder, where you download the stuff from CVS.

nothing in your real darkmod-folder will be overwritten and you'll always know exactly which files are already on CVS.

I hope that you don't use your private folder for the stuff you want to put in CVS. I said it a hundred times, this will cause CVS to fuck up without it recognizing it.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.
