As I had to get Steam for Thief4 anyways (I hate myself for that to be honest), I just started playing HAWKEN a couple of days ago. It is a free to play multiplayer shooter, where you are running around in mechas (I say mecha stead of mech as they are pretty mobile like in the japanese interpretation).

 

And I must admit that it is a very enjoyable ride. It reminds me a lot of the good old UT Classic or Quake3Arena (although not nearly as fast). The good thing is that it is pretty well balanced. The starting mechs are not really worse then the other ones you can purchase once you've played long enough, and the weapons you can unlock are not really stronger, as they always come with some negative side-effects.

 

Surprisingly there seem to be a lot of german people playing this game :)

 

However, if you have Steam already and like arena-like, uncomplicated multiplayer shooters, you should really try it out. Especially as it is for free.

 

Would really like to see some of you guys playing it so I can shoot ya up :D

Surprisingly there seem to be a lot of german people playing this game :)

 

Germans love robot games, most of the MechWarrior games I've had anything to do with have had strong Euro and mainly German at that, playerbases. Also seems to have a good following in Russia (MW that is, don't know about Hawken and Russians).

Interesting little tidbit about the team on Hawken, previously they used to work on something called Project Offset which first started making waves about 8~ years ago. It was an amazing first person fantasy game that looked absolutely freakin' incredible (especially for the time) but sadly intel bought up the company and eventually Project Offset became nothing.

I think the graphics is even really good from todays standards. Very awesome stuff.

@Obsttorte --I've got it downloaded some months ago but haven't fired it up yet. I was hoping the feel of the game would be more like MW and less like UT though.

 

@Goldwell --I posted a link to that a couple/few months ago in some thread here. I followed it for a while till it ended. It looked absolutely fantastic and then Intel or some such bought it and buried it. It was around the time that Intel was working on their Larrabee gfx solution so naturally one would think, oh, they're going to push this game out as a launch title with their new gfx card but... that got buried too. :( Nice video culmination of all of stuff the offset team posted.

I guess that's in our blood. Remember that Germans have a weakness for the uber huge, be it Germania or the King Tiger - or even recent projects like the new Berlin Airport BER that is due to finish in about 10 years or the Elbephilharmonie in Hamburg (which will open the same day as the Berlin Airport). The same applies to Russians to some extent: Mechs are like tanks, and the Russians just looove their tanks! ^_^

      Taking a break to alleviate burnout. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have jumped into a map-making contest so quickly after just finishing another project and especially with my busy schedule, but I do believe I have something that the community will enjoy. No clue if I'll be able to finish it on time for the competition if I factor in a break, but I'd rather take my time and deliver something of quality rather than engage in development crunch or lose part of the map's soul to burnout.

      Yes, today's my birthday and as much as I want to play The Dark Mod, I won't until it's late Autumn, where it should be a bit chilly in my place and there's some wind too.
      For now, it's time to enjoy my birthday, if any of you want to play a great fan mission in my honour...Well that's asking too much, just play the mission because it's fun, not because of me, enjoy it yourself! 💪
