Unless you have a QOS manager running this can not be the firewall. Obviously it works as he IS downloading something, only the speed is not up to par. If the firewall wouold be the problem, he should have no downloads at all. ;)

I've seen reports on the net where people were only able to get very limited download speeds due to a software firewall or router. Not sure exactly what causes it but they had to manually assign a string of ports for Bittorrent to use. Gotta love technology. :)

Argh! I downloaded it from the Gamershell mirror late last night, went to unzip it today and found out it had been corrupted. Gonna give that mirror one more chance since it's pretty fast.

Edit - Nope, that one seems to be corrupted or something, keep getting the exact same error from Winzip about the exact same number of bytes missing from the zip. Shame too, was getting 600k/s on that one :) Guess it's time for the torrent.

I have it, but I have to download Thief 2 now as well, due to the fact that not a single one of my 50 game CDs is in a case and they've all been lying about loose since the day they were first opened.

I estimate that less than 20 of them would actually install.

Lame.

Yeah, I hate that I have 2 copies of Thief 2. The CD-key for each is printed on the jewel case, so if you separate the case from the CD you're screwed. I installed one of them and played one for a while, then wanted to play again 6 or 12 months later but couldn't because I could only find the copy I had installed on my PC. I'd try the other one but would get, "not the right CD. Insert correct one." I wasn't happy. Fortunately, I eventually found the CD I needed for the installation I had on my PC and have done my best to keep track of it.

EDIT: oDDity... I'm sure you would've anyways, but put it on Expert when you play T2X. I'm playing Hard and it hasn't been that hard yet.

Is there any way of removing the light gem (other than putting a bit of black paint over the monitor?)

A less permanent solution would be to use black electrical tape instead :D The brightness of it kind've bothered me at first, but got used to it a mission or two into it.

Did anyone else get half-blinded when activating notes to read them?

I get blinded by the notes in T2, so, yes. :) Our thieves need a red light flashlight or something for stealth-reading and being easier on the eyes when we're adjusted to the dark.

Btw, is it just me or did they make some of the movement speeds faster in T2X (like walking in particular)?

You'll need the lightgem in T2x, because it doesn't always match up with the brightness.

It doens't ALWAYS match up in any Thief game, but that's the point in removing the gem.

It's adds an extra edge ot the game because you've no way of knowing if you're going to be seen or not.

The best policy is to never let a guard look in your directiion at any time whether you're in dark or light. That's the way I like to play it.

I disabled the gem in the modifs I did to the TDS HUD. Sadly I do not know how to in T1or2, but it should require just a quick hack of a GUI file.

Personally I like the trend towards limited or no HUD that some games are taking, like Riddick and Call of Cthulhu.

Does anyone have any hints on how to get Thief 2 running on my computer? I upgraded a while ago, and I havn't been able to get my system to run it. The screen just goes black when you go into the game, and you have to shut it down using the task manager...

My system is as follows:

P4 2.8 GHz

1GB Ram

nVidia GeForce FX 5600 w/ 128 MB RAM

100GB hardrive

Windows XP

Direct X 9.0c

nVidia Detonator drivers 66.93.

I have tried the texture fix thingy recomended in the troubleshooting guide, but no joy.

It is annoying, coz I want to play T2x!

Any ideas?

You have tried removing the the ; from the start of the line saying 'safe texture manager' in the user.cfg, and it dind't work?

It worked for me, though I have an ATI card.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
