I am installing TDM for the first time, and inside the file hash.txt is zsMH:<hash>.
I know what MD5, SHA256 are etc. but what is zsMH and how do I verify it?

Ehm... I see you are a tech-savvy user if you care about hash verification 😀

Normally, you can ignore this hash if you download the program from the official website: www.thedarkmod.com
It is there for tdm_installer's self-update: thanks to this file it can learn when new version has been posted on mirrors, without downloading the whole file every time.

But if you really want to check it, zsMH is not the name of the hash.
The hash is computed with BLAKE2s hash function.
Compute if for tdm_installer.exe or tdm_installer.linux64, and it should match.

Thank you:

$ b2sum -a blake2s tdm_installer.linux64

$ cat hash.txt
zsMH:5644d1a1b4c17f9d5abeb9c5e8517c10d269cc0174fac16842a9205180e50f4f

Yes I am technical 🙂 I speak code -> C++, Rust, Python.

To be fair, the fact you're checking the Linux version of tdm_installer also makes for a strong suggestion of the technical type.

In any case, play TDM, it's a good way to deal with the (hopefully short) lockdown...

A word of warning, Agent Denton. This was a simulated experience; real LAMs will not be so forgiving.

I extracted the Windows TDM Installer zip to my Desktop; now I have a hash.txt file there. Should I move it to my 'darkmod' game directory, or delete it? I use Win10.

Based on stgatilov's post, I can't tell if it exists just for the initial download, or if the TDM updater will keep using it in future TDM version updates

You can delete it.

It is important that this file is present on TDM server, because it is used for self-update. But after you download zip file, it has no use.

      Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

      I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

      I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
