Quake Wars engine

No. If we were still at the beginning (i.e. back in 2004), this would be a valid option, but as I'm writing this we're passing the third year of development. Switching engines at this point would be a sure-fire way to push back any tentative release date, which is probably not what people like to see (both developers and player audience).

Have you ever played "Duke Nukem Forever"?

Why would huge outdoor areas be a good thing? Mr Thief moves like a snail, that's why most missions are set in narrow medieval streets and cramped buildings. I don't want players to have to run half a mile just to get to the mission (we're not charging by the hour like World of Warcraft). :)

Also I doubt Quake Wars' FPS AI would be much use?

You know, the only reason why we are not finished is, because every half year, there is a new engine coming out, and we tend to switch to it immediatly, because it's so much cooler then the old one. If we ever get finished, you will have the newest and coolest engine to play with. It's a bit hard to keep up with the coding though ...

We take the general approach that it's better for the player to use their own skills to overcome obstacles rather than rely on some random "dice roll" or look at a progress bar while their character "works on" something. To that end, we reach all new levels of interactivity by letting the player perform actions by pressing two adjacent buttons very rapidly. It takes enormous skill to press one button, then the other, rather than pressing the same button twice. By linking key game tasks to how fast the player can hit two buttons alternatively, and how long they can keep it up for, we give the player complete control over their character and immerse them completely in the game. Beta testers have reported that it's more real than reality.

It also gives you real tendonitis more than reality.

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

...just like how a real thief would get tendonitis from lockpicking too much. Ingenious!

It's great not just for lockpicking, but also for getting that extra boost of speed when running away from guards, and searching for items in your backpack (actually it's only part of the backpack rummaging minigame) and something else that the thief can do when alone (here's a hint, it's synergistic with the voyeurism associated with the Thief genre).

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
