FPS Problems (Windows)

I've had TDM installed for quite some time now and have just gotten around to playing it. So I started off with In The North with everything set to max... Everything starts out fine, but as soon as I get to where you start seeing NPCs, the FPS will drop from 60 to 40fps and below (even hit 15fps) in a split second. I know nothing intensive is going on because my fans aren't even coming on, so I'm not sure why this is happening.

My PC contains this setup:

Superclocked 780ti

i5 4670k

16GB RAM

I am pretty sure that this should not be happening. Are there any known issues or fixes I should know about?

might be antialising if its greater than 8x, else its eax which is known to cause weird fps drops on some systems. as you are on nvidia you should be able to play with vertical sync turned off without any weird tearring, unless its already turned off.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just played through In The North part 1 and experienced the same problem. I have also played Lucia's Tears and a Score to Settle and experienced it there as well.

It looks like when I enter a new area where NPCs are active I get a big slowdown, usually to about 40 FPS but it can hit 0 or 15. I'm not sure if it's goes back to normal on its own or because I'm either KOing or leaving the area. It seems to be a CPU issue. (I have a GTX 760 with an i7 4770k). I have AA turned off and everything else maxed. I tried turning 'threading optimization' or whatever it's called off in the Nvidia Control Panel and turning it off seemed to modestly hurt performance, so I turned it back on.

I can live with the performance but of course would prefer to fix it. I figured it was just a problem of optimization.

My GPU fans are not audible through any of this and it's also clear from the graphical context that the GPU is not being overtaxed.

I'll try turning off EAX in a moment.

EDIT - Couldn't immediately reproduce the problem, I'll see when I try a new FM tomorrow.

By the way TDM is a really outstanding piece of work. Congratulations to those of you have worked on it.

Thanks. EAX is known to cause some odd problems, so hopefully the issue will go away.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
