  1. I always underestimate the last minute peak of backers. It even made it to a stretch goal.
  2. In this episode of another indie 2D metroidvania kickstarter... with ninjas. Here we have Bushiden. I don't know what sets it apart from the rest but it looks cool enough so I backed it. I'm plugging here because it's reaching the deadline and it seems it's not going to make it. If you like it you have a chance to push it closer to the goal. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pixelarcstudios/bushiden-a-futuristic-ninja-action-platformer/posts/2323583?ref=backer_project_update If it fails it will probably become a... *dry swallows* a hobby project. Just like my apple and worm game, which might be finished some time before the sun goes supernova.
  3. One would think a two color renderer would be cheaper but it's definitely an aesthetic choice. It's probably done with post processing shaders so it's actually more computationally expensive than traditional rendering.
  4. I know what you mean! Maybe if instead of robbing people you were some kind of spy trying to uncover some conspiracy by entering specific people's houses it would make this less... troubling? I don't know which adjective. Close to the bone is as good as it gets.
  5. I have been playing this lately and I thought the lot of you would appreciate it as well. https://store.steampowered.com/app/653530/Return_of_the_Obra_Dinn/ Made by the same guy who made Papers, please. It's a mystery solving kind of game that actually feels like you are solving something. I have always been frustrated by how tough it is to gamefy mystery solving. I won't go into details because this is one of those games better experienced knowing little to nothing about it. But I highly recommend it! I'm still playing by the way, so no spoilers for me if you already finished it, please.
  6. I will give this a shot. No particular order: PortalThief: The metal ageKerbal Space Program I know I said no particular order but I think the next ones should come after those three. Maybe these are honorable mentions. FTLThief: The dark projectThe Dark ModPortal 2I have been playing games on the PC and before it was a thing my whole life. So there are A LOT of games to consider, these are just the ones that stuck with me even after years after playing; games that made a mark.

It sure is very... japanese! I could never get into the metal gear series. Back in the ps era I would die to play that cool looking stealth game (never played one back then) but when I got the chance to play one, stealth was already well defined and better made by other titles. Last Metal Gear I played was the one before, ground zeros, and it's basically a glorified demo to phantom pain for $20. Worst $20 ever spent.
  8. Demagogue and richisbored covered all my game suggestions. The fun thing is that these games make use of one of assembly, the most infamously difficult and complicated programming languages and turn it into entertainment. Goes to show how far gamefication can go and how much presentation influences how we perceive something. Anyway, the reason I learned any programming at all is because I needed it. I like programming but not for programming itself, it's the means to an end. So maybe once he finds something he likes and requires programming he'll bite into it with more interest. Game development is great fun, so with that there are some obvious choices like game maker, unity, godot engine, uzebox etc. All very fun ways of making games that require learning programming

I found a way to look up games I played, liked, and are on sale. By going through my reviews. So here are a few good sales: Styx is 75% off. I have issues with this game but it's stealth and original and has a lot going for it. In a world of games with zero personality and moronic writing I just think it's worth overlooking Styx's shortcomings, because it does a lot of things right. Strider is awesome and is 70% off. Talos Principle is 80% off, and I like it. Just a bunch of puzzles and an interesting story. I also recommend Archibald's Adventures. It's an old puzzle platformer that got re-released on steam recently and there's a good sale. Solid puzzle design. Strafe is 50%, which is an ok discount for steam's standards but I noticed some love for quake aesthetics here and this game is all about that.

Dirt Rally. I'm not a racing game person but I really wanted something to play in VR. I even bought the F zero inspired thing (forgot the name) but the thing gave me so much technical difficulties I asked for a reimbursement. 80% off is cool, even if it's still $12.

I tried to list games on sale that I already own so I can recommend games I already know are worth it. But I couldn't find an easy way of doing that. I just tried another purchase quickly: Stephen's sausage roll. It's quite a strange concept but a really cool puzzle! very original. You control a... thing, that has to move sausages onto grills... you know what, just watch a video or something. This game defies description.

So, does anyone have recommendations? I like sales to lower the amount of games in my wishlist a bit. I get all the games that are lower than a dollar and a couple of more expensive ones. So far the only more expensive one I found is The Witness. I haven't played much yet but I do like what see so far. Just a straightforward collection of puzzles on an island. I haven't checked the cheap ones yet.
  13. Yup. And if I pull the console during gameplay and check for the vr_enable it says it's 1. This executable is the normal one from installation, right? I have my suspicions that steamvr might be the one not playing along. It's known to be difficult.
  14. Decided to give this another shot and it still doesn't launch in VR. SteamVR just sits there showing me the room and tdm runs on the screen. I even tried creating a steam shortcut for TDM with "run in VR" option. Get to work, cabalistic! work for my entertainment! *cracks whip* In all seriousness I'm always baffled by my incompetence when it comes to all technical things in TDM.
  15. Can confirm. I don't know how to use that command and I'm using 2.06 /64 Ah! I heard him say it once but the only part of that information that remained in my head afterwards was "I remember seeing that something something mage's guild"
  16. I've also encountered SuaveSteve's stuck guard at the same spot. Pretty great mission! The only part I needed spoiler was the Also,
  17. It's been a while since I played any TDM. Very little time for gaming in general unfortunately. Decided to pick this one up and boy what a fun mission! I had a blast. Got curious about the name and thought it was a collaborative work while playing. Then I read the sad news. But, yeah, awesome mission! great heist style, good challenge but not save/load incessantly hard, and no leaps of logic puzzles. Very engaging and satisfying.
  18. If you're an artist you can paint your own sky as you like but that's kinda hard. Alternatively, take pictures of the sky and try to use that as a starting point (rarely a picture can be used as is), as a fake artist this is what I would start with and then paint over it until it all comes together. Also, I'm sure you can find some free options of well detailed cube maps with nice looking skies. edit: found online a bunch of sources showing how to transform panoramic photos into cube maps. That sounds interesting.
  19. I enjoyed it. But my main problem with the previous movie is that it is a ripoff of a new hope. Like, scene by scene, shameless carbon copy! So when going in to see this movie I made a promise to my friends; if there's a scene in this movie when an important villainous character talks to Rey "No, I am your [family connection]" and Rey responds with "nooooo", I will watch the next star wars movie straight from pirate bay. So that's a big part of my enjoyment of this movie. It is an original story, flawed as it may be. Considering the prequels are also original stories I appreciate good original stories even if they are not amazing. I remember that after seeing the first movie, Snoke didn't leave any impression on me and I was surprised by all the theories and expectations that fans made around it. So I'm fine with that end as the death of an unimportant character and a departure from Snoke being the placeholder for the emperor. The fact that Rey's parents have been established to be not important also pleases me as a departure from the originals and as I like it as its own story. Things I did not like: the entire subplot trying to find the code breaker (or whatever that's called). I came to dislike those characters. And Rey is quite a boring character too. I mean, Luke in the originals was kind of a Mary Sue as well but he was following the hero's journey religiously, and that's a well known working formula. While Rey seem to be played by ear as far as plot goes and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere interesting. She is good at everything and she will save the galaxy. Maybe they can still cram the hero's journey in this character all in one movie but that would feel clumsy. Sure, she already had call to adventure, mentor, allies, but she still needs an ordeal and everything after that, she needs to lose her hand and almost die or something like that. So I look forward to watching the next one in an actual movie theater
  20. Merry christmas, yall! Happy Festivus too! According to Festivus tradition we now commence the airings of grievances, where we list all the times we disappointed each other. (please don't)
  21. I recently got an oculus, now I'm super excited about this! Couldn't make it work though, moved all the files and all, nothing happened. But don't waste time helping me! I'm here just to share enthusiasm and encourage the work.
  22. I played fallout 4 for 21 hours and got tired before finishing the main quest. Bethesda games (the ones they actually make like fallout and elder scrolls) tend to get old pretty quick for me.
  23. I just finished and I enjoyed it. It's the first game I ever wished it was shorter. It took me 30 hours to finish the game! I mean, sure, it's good but after so long I just want some closure But I totally recommend it. The game has distinct phases which is admirable, seeing how the gameplay rules are basically always the same but the parameters change smoothly. That's a clumsily vague way of putting it but I don't want to give details that might spoil the experience. It's also a game that contains the lines of dialogue "the place is darker than my butthole at the bottom of a pit" and "it melted into a black goo that smelled like fried ass". Truly riveting stuff. The whole experience is still processing in my head as I finished it just a few hours ago, but I'll probably write more about it somewhere. On that note - and a bit off-topic too - if anyone has a good suggestion for places to write I'm all ears. I have a few reviews/articles on medium (dot com) but that place shows all the signs if a dying service. Gamasutra is great but they discourage pure review articles. I know everyone just watches youtube videos now but I'm not willing to read stuff on camera yet.
  24. A HL 3 game is a difficult project, because what made them popular back then became cliche. Don't get me wrong, you could still make an amazing game with ideas that are considered cliche! a linear FPS with awesome story, awesome gameplay would sell now, then and always. However, my best guess is that if they really want to make a HL3 one day it will be following the same motivations of the original games; they had a state of the art engine with amazing physics, so if they get their hands on some new technology HL3 might be a good project to work on it. I was kinda counting on VR fulfilling that role but nothing happened so far. Also, I am 100% certain there will be a half life 3. What world would this be if we can't leave a single franchise dead, right? I mean, sure it might happen as just "Half Life", without the 3, as just a reboot. But it still counts.
  25. Talk about real challenge. If you get caught by a guard you can't play the game again gives 'permadeath' a run for its money. (I just came to make that unfunny joke sorry)
