  1. There is NO such thing as privacy anymore. It's an illusion that we wish for but cannot attain. It's over! A belief of the past. like keyholes. Software can bring together every known thing about you that has ever been recorded from birth records, school and police records, licenses, banks, creditcards, medical records, cellphones, travel etc. And now every interest you have ever expressed on the Internet is also part of those records... including any comments you have ever made in any forum or comments on a news site and, of course, your social profile from information you submitted about yourself on various sites. PLUS all the information OTHER people/friends/relatives have posted on line about you. A background check now is done for even the lowliest of jobs. Depending on the (percieved) requirements of the job your personal profile is available to buy/use at will. The only thing you can do is to accept that there is no privacy --- and anyway who needs privacy? People adapt very quickly - my parents were horrified when I bought a guitar in 1956 on PAYments. Not because it was a guitar and rock and roll was evil, but because I did not save up first to buy it. Instead using the 'vulgar' Buy Now Pay Later concept of payments over time. .. and now there is not a person on Earth the does not depend on credit - their's or their government's. We are indebted to those who 'own' us namely bigbrotherbiz. In 'their' eyes we can have no secrets/privacy. Big Brother has always been there and easily acceptable if you have a faith that believes in an all seeing god-eye. Once they figured out that we don't really believe that god is watching us 24/7 and would punish us for our sins (against 'them'). Then 'they' came up with the NSA+ to really watch us 24/7. So if you are not in the drivers seat... then just enjoy the ride, because there is nothing you can do to stop it.
  2. I wonder if new players are having those amazing thrills that TG and TMA gave me - of REALLY being Garrett and hiding in absolute fear of Hammers, guards and all the other Thiefy enemies and escaping via rope arrows, mantling and waterways etc. Personally I'll not bother with this new version of Thief - for two reasons 1. I don't want to as it's just not my 'cup-of-tea'... I have not seen anything in the videos and walkthru's that draw me in. 2. I don't want my previous (and continuing) fun with previous Thiefs and TDM ruined forever with this nu-age teen game concept. As this new version has nothing to do with the previous games whatsoever, I don't know why they did not give it a new name. Had they called it another name and developed a new character instead, the game would not have old Thief payers up in arms about not being faithful to the Looking Glass classics.
  3. That's the name of the game with everything nowadays. We have developed into a permanant kindergarten class. Symbols and grunts for words. Fingerpainting (swiping your tablet/pad) is/has replaced the keyboard. Everything needs to be done for us as we automate and follow our robotic destiny. Another comment here was referring to just making a forward button that did everything for you - you just sit back and watch endless cutscenes.... but just as you are getting use to that - they will eliminate the forward button.
  4. I just bought a pack of two keyboards and two wheel mice for 19.95 from Tigerdirect in canada [probably 5 bucks less in US] the keyboards are glow-in-the-dark keys with big letters and symbols - like some sort of fisher price kiddy keyboard .. BUT.. The board and keys feel great to use and the mouse beats the MS mouse or the Logitech ones that I have. No, there are not any "extra" keys or buttons, but I prefer it that way.

    Footsteps

i would if I could and who knows maybe I shall give it a bash but I doubt anyone else would want to play a mod I come up with, as it would be all eye candy and secret buttons to discover. I don't really care about violence when I'm supposed to be 'playing' and prefer just hopping up and down buildings and robbing and exploring, stacking boxes mantling waterfalls and swimming against the flow etc. Altho' I do enjoy the undead and hammerites missions a lot and exploding frogs, spiders and snorty burracks. But guards I don't like, unless they are drunk and have humorous comments and conversations.
  6. Amazing - it takes me hours to complete a mission. Unlocking a door can take me 5 minutes!

    Footsteps

yeah i know all that but.... there are other ways of making noises such as banging or rattling something in your inventory. Bumping your head in the dark etc., at least one modder should try this and see how it affects game play.
  8. Brilliant!!! That certainly worked - now I'm all set to 'venture forth'. Thanks - these little hints that can floor some of us should be included in the setup readme.

    Footsteps

In real life I am a silent walker - people jump when I approach them and they accuse me of 'sneaking up' on them. I don't sneak deliberately but just walk quietly, naturally. If I were a real thief in this game no-one would ever be able to detect me by footsteps. Has our protaganist never heard of Hush Puppies? I realise that without this 'feature' the game would be unable to sic the guards on me via footsteps - they would have to use their vision and other awareness abilities but not footsteps. How about at least one mod where one can buy or steal soft leather boots/slippers and where noisey footsteps are for guards in boots and citizens in hobnailed boots. Even creeping makes terribly loud footsteps in some missions. Anyone that can make a moss arrow should surely know how to walk/creep silently - even on tile or metal.
  10. In the Thief games I would knock out or dispose of everyone and then go hunt around for loot in a house free of worry.
  11. How can that not be okay? In real life avoiding a hit is done by stepping out of the way?
  12. In the early nineties I remember telling a class that Pandora's Box has been opened and no-one will never be able to close it... some of the youngsters asked what I meant and I told them that 'all hell was about to break loose' and their futures were set in stone and that they was no way out. It prompted a lively discussion about the future of computers and being on line (BBSing). An old man once came into my "school of computers' and offered to pay me if I would "hurt' someone in a another city for him, using the computer. I wrote him off as crazy - like how? I thought, drop one on his head? Now someone can and they are, being 'hurt' by computers all the time by ruining their lives digitally.
  13. That is a terrific looking game. I was about to join in with kickstarter but while choosing a donation I found they don't use PAYPAL ...duH? I don't use credit cards so that threw me off. Also I don't use Steam. However I give it all my support. I especially like the idea of them speaking in English accents that suit the game. American accents are only suitable for Modern games.
  14. Seems right as I have over 700 from Komags DVDs that I got in 2010. Everything was in a torrent 34gb of Thief stuff. I don't know if it's still a torrent but I see that the US gov has taken down IsoHunt.com so torrents will soon be a thing of the past... like FTP is.
  15. This issue of constantly spying on everyone is the way it will be from now on. Every single lawbreaker will be punished, either now or at some future date as your 'crime' is electronically detected. America has led the way and will soon have all it's populace under control. There will be no way to move around or find electronic shelter in the new order AND everyone has been groomed to want and welcome it. If you don't then you must toss your cellphones, don't drive an auto and avoid cameras and computers.... and never tell your friends anything that they may eventually repeat on-line. That may give you a few more years of relative privacy but there is NOTHING you can do about it and so you just carry on and let them have their way with you. And just to see how you are being monitored for copyright infringements check out the us gov's ICE site. Search for it - but don't use google anymore - try DuckDuckGo.com
  16. It is not like the original for umpteen different reasons and I doubt I'll ever play it for some of those reasons... BUT! ...having said that I'd like to point out that the graphics are amazing and Im sure the game will fit right in with millions of 'new' players and some of the original players who don't mind and will enjoy the new methods of play. Eidos has no choice but to fit the game to todays players or it would fail and they would lose money. Very few people today have the desire to spend hours crouching in a darkened fireplace and slowly sneaking as they pass a guard. It's more rush, hurry, grap and run. Old Thief games are still playable and with TDM and missions there is plenty of 'old tyme' playing to do.
  17. hello, I found where it had gone SysWOW64, and cut the files from there and pasted them in a new folder on the desktop - ran it and the game started up fine. Other than having the problem of setting video size, it seems to work just great. The setting for video does not appear to have a setting for my screensize 1920x but plays well at other settings... not important right now as I'm getting a nVidia 760 next week. So bottom line? All is well and looking good. Again thanks for helping.
  18. Thank you for the timely answer and how to find it. Normal windows search found nothing but using DOS as you suggested worked. It was in Windows/SysWOW64. I have cut them out and will have another go at installing it later. I'll let you know when done. Meanwhile I suggest adding to the install readme that one should NOT make the folder in Program Files (x64). Again thanks for the help.
  19. I just downloaded TDM latest version to a new win7/new SSD drive. I made a folder call "darkmod" in my programs files x64. I had lunch while it downloaded It finished downloading and I looked for the TheDarkMod.exe in the folder - nothing there except the file I downloaded "tdm_update_win.zip' - no other files. Thats funny I thought so I searched around to see where it might have gone - nothing! Even windows search found nothing. So I rebooted and looked again still nothing, Okay do it again I thought and so ran the updater again. It races thru the download and says all files are up to date --- duh? what files and where are they? - I know my computer and windows and very little escapes me but this has me baffled and no amount of searching finds me the TDM. Any suggestions as to my solving this would be much appreciated.
  20. This is a nicer forum to read and take part in even 'tho I rarely do sign in. I haven't played any TDM missions for ages but my interest is now renewed after visiting again. I spend forever working on my gigantically large - one person - mod for Oblivion with over 1000 NPCs 450+ interiors in two different but connected - created from scratch- worlds. I've made new models and retextured and rebuilt thousands of other models. Heck my data directory in Oblivion is 17 gbs of 94,675 Files in 3,042 Folders. I started this mod back when th CS came out and keep on working at it. but it's time to stop for a while and actually play someone else's game. So it's TDM Time again!
  21. Well, I agree with many here that the game is not a remake of Thief and will never become a classic like the old game. I won't bother with it because of the character, the console UI and especially those stupid hands that make the character appear to be sleep-walking all of the time. This game is absolutely nothing like the original. They are cashing in on the youth of today by using a classic game's fame as bait. I doubt if ANY original Thief player will think this has anything to do with the old game. The game would be much better if they had renamed it The Fashionable Rogue and not brought the Looking Glass original into it. Hell! there are no Hammerites or burracks and no Benny and no swimming and from what I've seen so far no humor... and no reason to spend my money on leasing it.
  22. As usual I'm the oldest at 72. and for me life is just as wonderful, exciting and new as it has always been. Don't fret your youth it's just a beginning of thousands of pathways and doors - an endless adventure that you can enjoy for all your life by taking different pathways and opening different doors when you want change. Just because the body ages and aches, wears down and wrinkles, if your inner self is happy and has a good sense of humor, you'll enjoy every day of your life as I do. Just convince your innerself you are the greatest most wonderful person that you will ever know and never expect anything at all from anyone else to make you happy. You are, after all, the only person that is with you 24/7. So enjoy every moment of living.

    Morality

What parent wouldn't want perfect children that always behave? That's exactly where we are heading - genetically modified children that will be obedient and do exactly what is expected of them without questioning. A world where we can all be patriotic GI joes and Barbies that smile all the time and are always polite... a nice world full of nicely designed people. Our owners have been trying to get us that way since day one now it's possible to control via chemicals, genetic engineering or behaviour modifying tweaks to the brain. The future does look bright huh?
