I would "suggest' that rather than born into you it is the result of being nurtured by a mother that 'teaches' that it's the way to be by loving and giving food to the baby. I believe that if you took away mother help you would have a baby that would do everything it can to survive and that would include fighting to be the one on the nipple while pushing away weaker siblings. Agressive behaviour is natural and it's mother's job to tone it down in their babies. So I strongly disagree that 'niceness' of any kind is 'born' into a baby. It has to be taught thru' conditioning within the first few hours, days and weeks. By the time those babies in the test were tested they were already 'shaped'. All those qualities you mentioned are necessary to survive in a group but it is the group that shapes the newborn's behaviour to assure it 'fits' in with the group. Studying children of any age tells you nothing except how they have been shaped since birth by people, events and the environment around them. Of course physical differences and DNA traits will affect how the baby responds to early events so there will be noticable characteristics that will show up in any observations. Example being that a baby may be too weak mentally or physically to resist a sibling in fighting for a nipple - does that mean he is prone to sharing thru fairness or weakness.
  2. It was meant as sarcasm... but I must admit that I miss stories/games/movies/books that were written just for me and not my sister. I actually despise having to fight female NPCs in games... it just does not feel right. I also don't like to play games that involve half naked, big breasted fashion models wielding 60lb swords... it totally lacks realism. However having said that, I do realise that one has to take whatever the devs make if you want to keep playing games - something I should not really be doing at my age anyway.
  3. I agree you are contaminated by a "console" mentality... , Altho' I would refer to it as 'groomed' by console playing. I hope TDM never regresses to 'noobie handholding' in game as it would completely ruin it for non- console players who play in a completely different world. New players can watch walk thrus on utoob or/and ask for hints on the forum to learn how to play but please, not have the devs force it on everyone. I suggest you wait for the new Thief game coming next year as it looksas if it is specifically made for consoles having all the bells and whistles that console players have come to expect.
  4. I think that the thief shouldn't have a sword... just a dagger. A sword is pretty cumbersome for sneaking or climbing. Especially with trying to carry so much loot.
  5. Personally I prefer to play WITHOUT hints, screen help, info boxes or whatever. The less "help" the more better the discovery. You are not supposed to fight as you are a thief not a fighter so swordplay is not such a good idea.... especially as the guards have the avantage of steel armor for protection. Those games that have little info boxes on the NPCs and red or green circles are a complete turn off for me so I don't play them. As to having a 'chat' with someone while playing that would completely ruin my enjoyment. I like to play in the dark during the wee hours when everyone is asleep and without any interruptions. As to the various 'glitches'.... well my take on that is these are bloody great games put out by amazingly clever people who do all this work for fans of the oldThief games to enjoy... and for free even. I
  6. Yes it now is as clear as a bell! Again, Thanks for the tip.
  7. Thanks, that did allow me access but I'll be damned if I can 'see' the blurry resolutions but I know what i have do now so thank you for the quick and correct answer. I'll fix it later.
  8. Okay so it's now many weeks later.. so what did you get and what's it like???
  9. Just like the old 'carpet baggers' of yesteryear or the slick new legitimate 'bigbrobiz' conjobs of America now - it's just another way to see a fool and his money parted. When you get an email that you are not sure of just copy and paste the main parts or the address into Google search (or the cool new DuckDuckGo search engine) and you'll see lots of other search results that'll let you know about who's sending it.

    Morality

When I play a thief game. I like to think of my thief as a low life loser and a wimp trying to make his way in a mean old world. I fully expect every other NPC in the game to look at my character for who he really is... a sneaky, thieving scumbag and potential mass murderer that should, by rights, be locked up or hung. Trying to believe I am some sort of heroic robin hood or even a nice guy, just doesn't cut it. I'm a good guy in real life so naturally, my fantasy is to do all the things I'm not allowed to do for real, when I'm playing games.

    Morality

Morality, manners and good behaviour are patterns that living within a society (anykind) produces by way of survival. It's obeying the rules. It is the 'human' way of ensuring we don't kill each other by following the groups/tribes/religions/etc., rules, as laid down by the elders. It permits us to live in large groups without conflict - unless someone breaks the rules. It has nothing to do with human kindness or love or god and it's not 'born' into you it's merely commonsense. Your upbringing and the environment you are born into determine your character and how you follow the 'rules' thru'out your life.
  12. I think that's what he means... made by women for modern girls and gays to play with and catering to the least intelligent set of abilities that a teen can have. Damn how I wish for the "stay in the kitchen and cook woman!" days of yore. I certainly won't be wasting my money on it as it has nothing to do with the previous Thief games at all. I too am horribly disapointed with it just as I was by Bethesda's Skyrim UI. From the looks of Thief the New it will disappoint everyone who previously played the game that it's supposed to be based on. I think I see where this is all going... to finger touch your way thru games or 'wave' at them to play. The PC is certainly going to lose out and so will it's users unless they too join the mindless masses and succumb to being ' comfortably numb" the way bigbrobiz wants us... otherwise you will be stuck in a time warp like I am... I cannot find any game newer than 5 years old that I like. ( other than TDM - of course - and Morrowind and Oblivion mod remakes.) Did you know they actually hired a New York fashion designer to 'make' his silly looking super hero outfit.
  13. A few days ago I downloaded the latest TDM. Today I downloaded 3 missions and I went straight to the video settings and set the screen to 1920x1080 -(I should have chosen 1920x1200 but my monitor does both) The screen stopped and I got a "no video input" message which is my ACER monitor's default message for not connected. CTR ALT DEL would not get me a screen back so I had to turn off power and let it reboot. Everything is good. But, if I run TDM the same thing happens after I click TDM I immediately get the "no video input" message again and the screen loses all touch with the system. I have to switch off power and turn on again -it reboots fine. I looked in all the files (in TDM folder) that had today's date on them but could not find a reference to resolution. I'm working with: Windows 7.1 64bit Acer X263W 1920x1200 (recommended res. to use). Gforce GT 430 6GB ram Intel core2 quad 2.50ghz cpu I want to be able to get back to changing the res for TDM but cannot as I lose the video.... any suggestions?
  14. After taking that link, reading the reviews, the trailer etc., I'm not excited at all about it. But my reason's are probably different to everyone elses. Examples: The gothic (1980s) looking clothing with buckles and belts (should have a backpack 'tho to store the booty) - the slow motion jumps and the 3rd person view switching the taking longer to unlock locks 'to increase tension with the player" bit. The ridiculous bow. The reports that Garrett now swears and guards are now talking like mall cops in a Bmovie.... ...........After reading the reviews of the trailer and various 'official releases', I can now easily understand why the mess up with the crew supposed to be making it. All their exciting (to them) new ways to get a bigger customer base has resulted in each side giving up ideas so the other side can get their ideas worked in as well. It just splits the game to where nobody is happy. They should just make the game for everyone under 21 and give up trying to include the want's of older Thief fans, who they will surely upset with these new changes. The 'reality' part suggests that gone are missions like Contantine's Sword with his acid in wonderland house and replaced with brothels and other 13 year old turn-ons. Thankfully I now have all my Thief games working with better graphics and resolution, umpteen fan missions and can play anytime (am currently doing Thief Gold" AGAIN.... ) Besides with The Dark Mod and missions I think I'm thief full. ...And don't really want a Thief 4 after all. I want exploding frogs!!!
  15. I cannot help BUT... I can solve all my own issues very quickly by disconnecting c: drive and reconnecting another c: drive that has the essentials on it. If the same problem shows up on both drives then I have a hardware problem. If not then it's a software problem. That makes it much easier to trouble shoot. All that about overheating has never affected my computer and it has no sides on the case and only a 'mickey mouse' case fan that hangs from a wire blowing on my video card (that I had previously disconnected the fan from because it was too noisy). I have used computers for 40+ years including programming and repairing thousands of them. I have RARELY found hardware to blame for the issues. It is almost always a software issue that causes errors. Look to DirectX/registry problems and windows in general, plus auto updating from numerous callhome programs that can cause annoying errors. HOWEVER many times during my working career it was always easier to fix software issues by reformatting the hard drive and starting again than to spend endless hours troubleshooting.
  16. I read here that when TDM (2.0) is ready it will be on Steam. Does this mean that in order to play TDM in the future a Steam account will be necessary to play?
  17. My two cents: As great and wonderful as the old Garrett's voice is/was - the new Dark Mod maps really don't need him. First thing I noticed as a (old thiefs player) new TDM player was that the thief was not called Garrett and has taken on different names. I rather like this idea - it's like every mapper can mode the thief however they want. It's kinda like Dr.Who and the various actors who have played the roll. Also it seems like a complete waste of money to hire someone who belongs to the 'union' when there are people in all walks of life who would record for free - all with interesting voices and especially accents from everywhere. The only things that really ruins voice acting (for me) in period pieces, such as when TDM (17th-19th century) takes place, is when the voices sound (too) American... (back then there really wasn't an "American" accent yet)... or they have '20/21st century' words and phrases. (same goes for notes/letters and books)
  18. It's just my inexperience and my inability to use the keyboard and missing the right key. - I not only get too excited to remember which key to hit but I can't type without looking - BUT I must play in total darkness to enjoy, so I start with a handicap. However I certainly don't want to give the impression that the missions are 'too hard' or should be changed because of my suggestion. Everyway the mission maker can make the game more challenging is okay by me and it's one up for the mapper if he/she can get me ripping my hair out with frustration and screaming profanities at the author at the same time. And also.... I like to have multiple saves so any time in the future I can reload at different points in a game without having to restart or having to only have a quicksave to start from.

    Voice Acting

Ah ah! What a brilliant wiki entry. I can't wait to try my hand with DR. It all makes sense reading it as the lesson is so precise and has logical descriptions that look simple enough for even me to follow. Of course the proof will be in the pudding when I finally get DR's requirement of a MSDVC100.ddl. Back to voice acting. I forget which mod it is but I remember hearing a British accent that a guard had - really quiet, didn't get excited, totally cool and a real pleasure to hear - voicing some very funny phrases. I like an assortment of accents and from mature, deep, gruff guard voices to commoner and aloof sounding upperclass. I assume there is/will be a wiki entry on how to record - formats etc., for TDM? Or is it just a case of grab a mic and record?
  20. I just finished Above the City. That was an excellent game - I really enjoyed all the 'up and down' jumping etc.,. The whole game was a lot of fun and the drunk guard's dialogue is priceless. Whoever did the voice for that guard should get an award for one of the best moments of any mission (I've played) so far. Terrific finish too - actually makes my efforts feel rewarded.
  21. My two cents: I have an answer to this time thing... Why not offically have a contest every 3 months (spring, summer, fall, winter) ignoring when or how long is spent working on it. ? Everyone will then know when a contest will start and how long they have to finish it, or to get ready it for the next contest if they miss the first deadline. Within the next few months I think you will see TDM becoming more well known and played, especially after T4 stirs up more thiefy interests... and probably more TDM mission makers will come this way to write more missions. I guess it's illegal or something to offer prizes, but that would inspire more FM makers.
  22. TDM is a terrific addition to Thief and eidos should hire you all and pay you what you are worth for keeping the Thief games alive and giving them a pre-made fan base to sell their, up and eventually coming, T4 to. I have no idea what's involved in making these games because I cannot get my install of DR to run. The error message can't find the MSVCR100.dll appears. Try as I might with the latest dl of C++(64 and 86), latest DR, freshly install W7 and several reboots, I am unable to run DR. Once I eventually get DR up and running and see how hard it is I'll either have a bash at it or give up. Meanwhile I think a little beef now and then among all the bouquets should be permissable... and I really did think hard to frob/focus was intentional just to slow you down... I admire ALL the mission makers, having now played about a dozen (TDM) of them and have had over a week of enjoyable playing with lots more ahead. ...F key? h'mmmm....
  23. I think instead of condemning a whole game as the worst - just the worst parts should be rated. I've found the most annoying parts of the games I've played so far are the ways loot is placed in chests. Instead of 'real life reach in and grab' the map designers have decided that you have to stand up move around, hop about crouching etc just to take something out of the chest. Or they stick something on a table that would normally involve reaching forward and taking it ... but no, the designer thinks it would be much more fun if you have to leap on a table, then crouch to pick it up. I assume the idea is to slow you down so that you can caught by the guards. That's a huge fail as far as I see it and just now playing ( I great little romp through a guard infested mansion) Kings Chalice has a safe that I can open but no amount of hopping up and down and attempting to bring the loot into focus works. Thats just plain silly. When its only a few inches from your nose. Consequentally after 15 minutes of trying (even tried shooting the stuff out with arrows) I gave up, done the required objectives (on medium), ignored stealt, grabbed the necessary item and scarpered out side with everyone trying to kill me, to complete the mission. Those big desks with all the drawers and cupboards are another example of stupid. A great looking model with assinine accessability. What the big deal is to make the loot hard to focus on is beyond me? - it's does nothing for enjoyment of the game and results in pointless frustration for me.
  24. Additionally: I would rather not 'die' all the time in the game but knocked out and wake up; in jail, down a well or out on the street, weak, with all the equipment and booty taken - but alive so I can sneak in and try again.
