  1. Yep, the DPad would definitely be my preferred method of scrolling weapons and inv items, as Ungoliant says, without this it could get very tedious. The reason I chose the drop item option rather than lock-picks is that some mission objectives might actually require you to drop an item (i.e. place some evidence somewhere to frame someone etc) so without this could be a mission breaker, and lock-picking would already be possible, so the extra button would only be for convenience.
  2. A search reveals that both Komag and LEGION use Pinnacle Game Profiler, which costs $20 but sounds quite good. I didn't think the controller would have enough buttons to support playing TDM properly, but I managed to map all the required keys to buttons in the following image: Probably not the kind of mapping I would use if playing with a controller full time, but I think the easiest transition to TDM for someone familiar with console FPS type games. I would probably map the DPad to Previous+Next Inventory (Left+Right) and Previous+Next Weapon (Up+Down), with the LB and RB buttons being lean Left+Right.
  3. I'd love to play a russian FM even though I can't understand a word of it. Playing STALKER does that to you.
  4. In my mind, 'Commoner' is almost akin to 'Civilian' - so unarmed NPCs with no affiliation to builders or guards, 'Thief' is any rogue type character (rogue, smuggler, thief) - typically armed though not necessarily, and guard is where armed NPCs within an official organisation go (i.e. builders and city watch). If there were a folder name change in the works, then given the above definitions I would suggest 'Civilian', 'Rogue', and 'Guard' to cover these three archetypes, however, keeping 'Thief' and 'Commoner' doesn't seem like a big deal IMHO if it causes less hassle than changing things.

    Subversion

Some of you will already have seen this, or at least seen some of the earlier videos or images about this upcoming game from Introversion. I've been looking forward to it for a while now (since the procedural city demonstration video), but up until now there was little or no detail about some of the actual gameplay mechanics. I think it's now a battle between this and Infinity for my most anticipated game of the future (and maybe DX3). Watch the video (yes, the whole 27 minutes) at RPS.
  6. Awfully negative towards TDM on that forum, but thanks to Google Translate I have found at least one entertaining sentence from that thread (page 128): "Enough of thumb, the project grows, do not put it in one corner of the bearded uncle."
  7. A lot of wikipedia articles have a Legacy section where the impact of the game/movie/book is discussed, which would be a good place for not only TDM, but FMs and other games that may have taken inspiration from Thief.
  8. Stellar work on the texture alignment on those stairs Fidcal, I like it. @Shadowhide: There's a definite improvement in your second screenshot. Springheel has some valid criticisms though, the decal under the beam is incorrect, but more importantly that beam doesn't look like it belongs there at all (not only due to physics ). If you've included it purely so you could have that extra light, consider removing the hanging light and instead use light from the window on the left to fill in some of the dark spaces. Also, that window on the left isn't placed correctly if you notice the stonework above and below the window. Think about how this would look in real life, in most cases the stone blocks wouldn't be cut up by the window like that but would align with the window dimensions.
  9. You're doing this all wrong guys. If you want maximum publicity you've got to generate a little controversy. Make a trailer or FM containing gratuitous violence and thieving and then write to the Daily Mail. They go ape-shit for that kind of thing. On second thoughts, forget about the trailer or FM, they never check their facts anyway. Hasn't TDM already been featured in Blues news? An RPS recap would be nice, though I'm sceptical of how successful that would be in terms of boosting numbers. Sigh, I'm getting really cynical with gamers in my old age.
  10. Thank you for reminding me of this, I was aware of it but the multiplayer only part had turned me off trying this until now. I'm having an absolute blast with this mod, I also bought the soundtrack which is excellent especially when played in the background of these maps. Being a thief fan I naturally chose the 'Recon' class due to the agility and the thermoptic camo lasts longer, though this class is probably the hardest to learn the gameplay on. I do think a singleplayer campaign would have helped with learning how to play etc but then this probably never would have been released. There aren't too many players currently, but there's usually one full / semi-full server and people come and go regularly. It's probably better that it's not too crowded as having fewer players increases the tension between encounters and you seem to be able to make better use of the stealth elements of the game. @Noisycricket: Make the time! You won't regret it. Anyway, if anyone's up for a game sometime my name is midnightGhost (steam ID: codename_milo).
  11. Well you'll definitely be forced to put up with 3rd person when speaking to NPCs who allow for conversation trees, but since DX1 already did this no-one's complaining. I think the reason people (including myself) are concerned about 3rd person in combat takedowns and in-game cinematics (which I don't recall DX1 ever having IIRC) is that it kills the immersion of first person, even though you could argue the DX1 conversations had the potential for this but didn't. Maybe some situations are just more likely to kill immersion when utilising 3rd person than others. I'm certain this is the case with the cinematics if they are going to take control from the player regularly (I've been playing Metro 2033 which does this, and it occasionally does hurt immersion), but like demagogue says, if you can avoid the special takedowns or maybe if it doesn't kill immersion completely (since you're in control of it, unlike cinematics), then it could very well be a small issue, for me at least. If the game is hackable in future, then I'm guessing one of the first things that will be changed is the colour theme of orange, which has got to get old really quickly in such a large game. Google for Shanghai at night and have a look at all the colours in some of these images, then contrast this with what we're getting. Instead, they chose to use a single colour palette that reminds them of the renaissance so that they could claim that this game is art. Bit too much of a trade off IMHO. Have a look at this (sadly discontinued) Crysis mod, and get a feel for what DX3 could have looked like (be sure to watch the video as well): Cyberpunk (with colour)

    Ruiner Mod

Arx: End of Sun! Ruiner looks pretty cool, definitely going to try this later.
  13. Hopefully the opportunities for third person combat are few and far between, like something that they use to show off the game but that are actually quite rare to find the right moment / situation to pull off effectively. The good news is the hacking looks great (though this has led to no lockpicking / multitools), and modifiable weapons is another plus.
  14. A Facebook plugin that lets you "blackjack" friends instead of "poke"?
  15. Hmmm, I thought that sounded familiar. Rune is not a stealthy game to begin with, but hopefully can be modded to include stealth elements.
  16. I was aware of TDM because of TTLG, but never really followed it assuming it would probably end up being abandoned like most ambitious fan efforts. I started following more closely once I saw the first teaser trailer though, which showed how much work had already been put in by that stage, and more importantly showed how good 'Thief' could look in the Doom engine.
  17. Registered in Jan for the last round of TDM voting. It says my level is 90% / Rank 2, which I assume makes my vote count more than a new user? So here's a suggestion: y don't y0u add in sum gunz and stuff so ur mod gets moar votes??! theres alredy zombies, so ur alredy halfway their, right??!! Oh and u shuld change to the source engine coz nobody votes for doom mods.
  18. I'm fairly certain the guards don't have perfect aim and do occasionally miss without me moving. I'd guess they hit their target about 80% of the time. I've still not mastered aiming with broadheads at a distance, though I'm sure this will come with practice (it's rare that I feel the need to snipe guards with the bow from long distances, which is why I'm not used to it yet). An unofficial add-on sounds like a good idea for those who feel they'd make good use of it, though I would personally just prefer to practice with the existing bow.

    moddb

An official Dark Mod youtube channel might be a good idea. About moddb updates, while it would be nice to have development progress posted on moddb, this should be moderated carefully. Not too long ago I started tracking Minecraft and it seems there's an update every 15 minutes, most of them not really updates. On the other hand, maybe that's why it's number 1.

Apologies for going off on a tangent here, but you've stated this a couple times and I'm not sure I understand where this sentiment comes from. Yes, Mr. Newell is quite a wealthy man I'm sure, but what exactly is it that makes him greedy? Steam has sales all the time, so you can find games for much less than you would pay on the high street. Let's contrast this with GOG.com, who offer games that are often priced the same as Steam, but who I assume you don't dislike with a passion. They might also have crap customer support (I don't know if they do, I'm just postulating), but that's besides the point. The only conceivable problem you can have with Steam IMO is the pseudo-DRM that the nature of the platform enforces (which is quite attractive to publishers leading to a larger Steam catalog and therefore probably the biggest thing stopping PC gaming from going down the sinkhole), and their willingness to support Games for Windows Live (eugh!), but I'm willing to put up with that for the benefit of getting regular updates pushed to my computer, having save games synced between computers and having the ability to download, delete and download games as and when I want. Not having a go at you, just wanted to know why all the Steam hate (I use, and like, both Steam and GOG btw).
  21. Heh, seems you can never please all the fans. I came across a demo CD containing Heretic II, Populous the beginning and TDP (what a day!). I ended up buying the first two some time later when I finally had my own computer but it was Thief I looked forward to the most due to the incredible atmosphere of the demo. I asked for Thief for my birthday and was surprised to find a copy of TMA (which I didn't even know about before then). I only got half way through before running out to buy Thief Gold so as not to ruin the story. Agree with what you say about the differences in demos. Half-Life Uplink was the demo I played before the full game. I still look back on it fondly as it was completely different to the actual single player campaign, whereas most demos you forget about since they're usually the first level of the game.

Will you be able to update a mission thats already installed? If so, then I don't see why version 1.0 of all released missions shouldn't be uploaded to moddb for the publicity, and then users have an easy way to keep up to date from within TDM itself.
  23. I think I prefer a range of difficulties. It's a big ask for a community of mappers to have consistency in this area, but making good use of the difficulty settings (with things like hints as opposed to just number of enemies) is the ideal situation IMHO. Also... Dang Bikerdude, what did you say?
  24. That's such a depressing way to look at game development nowadays, and probably totally justified as well. Makes you wonder why they bother trashing existing franchises if they can just make a clone of CoD or some other successful formula instead. Raping a fanbase often seems to be a profitable substitute for real creativity. Reminds me of the recent news about a live action version of Akira that's in the works, possibly starring Zac 'High School Musical' Efron. I was all about to go Angry Internet Man on all the blogosphericles until I found out they were likely setting the film in New York, at which point my anger fuse burnt out. Thi4f... I probably will end up buying it, but if there's forced third person I'll hate playing through much of it. An image on TTLG made me laugh, and then I cried.
  25. There have already been 40 downloads of 1.02 from moddb in the two days since it was posted, so it looks like it's well worth the effort to keep updating that page.
