  1. [ Off-topic: @ rebb's UW avatar! One of the best of all time. ]
  2. As a public service announcement: Since the mod is released, along with the source, players are welcomed to come up with their own mods/additions/contributions and submit them for consideration in the official distribution. It's not like we have an army working behind the curtain. Code (TDM or DarkRadiant) Textures Models Vocals Sound effects etc... Several features in TDM came along just that way: as an item submitted (by team member or not) that just made everyone say, "Wow, that's neat! Let's use it."
  3. I don't take (much) issue with the implementation (I do some with it being so simplified that there's no dexterity play involved at all -- the mechanics are half the damn fun, IMO), but mainly with them proclaiming it as something revolutionary when it's not.
  4. Don't even know what to say here. A 'system' being called S.M.A.R.T. which basically amounts to mantling and crouching. It also appears to be a dumbed-down version, because they keep mentioning the 'smart' button (not buttons) so I guess it's an all-in-one. Recall how well unified ammo went over in DE3. Dumbed down and old ideas, sold as features. Throw in some charming fellows and a (probably fake, or else they're going to run out of budget) high tech development setting, and you're ready to ship! Well, I guess it's new to shooters? Next they'll invent varying AI awareness levels and frobbing. http://brinkthegame.com/media/videos/?id=76 Edit: bit hostile? Perhaps, but it's like, "pssst hey guys, we've been doing that for years."
  5. Awesome. Sharing both ways would definitely be a great thing. Arx! Rock on.
  6. During the quakecon Rage demo (iphone, but nonetheless) Carmack mentions it utilizing radiosity lighting. I wonder if they're doing it realtime or if it's also lightmaps. I believe Crytek does it realtime, so I'd guess Rage must do it as well. I'd like to see someone make that NB bedroom shot above in TDM, but I doubt it would look as realistic because of lack of lightmaps. Maybe it could be made up for in other ways, though...
  7. Absolutely adored Arx Fatalis, so I really hope these guys pull this mod off. I would love to be able to play Arx FMs. The readable system actually looks just like TDM. Good suggestion, Midnight.
  8. I'm not sure whether to read that as offended sarcasm or as matter of fact... and I do admit there have been times when I wondered if this was ruse. Well either way, I meant no offense. On topic: who created the Creator?
  9. Nope, id tech 3 versus id tech 4. In reading on this story a bit last night, I ran into Wolfenstein (not 'Return To'), by Raven (a game which I didn't even know existed... Bad marketing? Wolfenstein 3D, Return to Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein... seriously guys? And Raven truly is cursed, never getting recognition for their games), which is id tech 4. I gotta say it looks... intriguing? While in some places I'm not impressed (the character models), in other places, id tech 4 looks pretty great with lightmaps. I would assume Quake 4 had them too, but of course they go to 'real world' use in Wolfenstein, and it's impressive, and the engine is running fast. Here's hoping id tech 4 source comes out some day and soon so TDM may some day benefit from lightmaps.
  10. I recommend anyone interested in this thread to check out (literally) everything by Youtube user NonStampCollector. He uses a simplistic cartoon format for amusing and intelligent commentary on the issues. Some of them are downright hilarious regardless of your stance. And all of them will make you think. Even his username addresses one of the points of contention (that "atheism is a religion"). * The faithful might have their faith challenged, and it might also inspire them to new debate material. * The non-faithful will be entertained. * Most importantly though, everyone will be presented a good summary of the most common arguments for faith and the reasons presented against them. Since this thread seems to be going the way of the most common points, this might save some effort for better, new arguments.
  11. I believe that's when it's loading in all the high res versions of the textures. Shouldn't be every render mode toggle.
  12. I would only remind: the "sharp" version of the normal was supposed to indicate new stones, not decrepit, old, weathered, but instead what you'd see inside a new nice manor. So if the intention is to delete it... But beyond that, I'll stay out of it.
  13. Wow! http://tinyurl.com/2fce8x7
  14. Just to note, there are weathered and sharp versions of those stones. I guess the ones in the pic at top are the sharp versions. (maybe doesn't pertain to the point, just saying)
  15. Why is the shot all blurry like that? Is that zoomed in or is something very wrong (I was wondering about an odd doubling or blurring effect in these shots too)?
  16. I hear that The Dark Mod is PC exclusive.
  17. Sure, it wouldn't be encouraged* and couldn't be hosted (or likely even condoned) by the 'mod official', but it's your mod; locally you can do whatever you want with it. *In such a project as TDM, time and effort are better spent improving it, not making it into something else; wouldn't you agree?
  18. Well my research shows this person was recently punched on TV, and that's all I know. TV viewing by me has declined for a long time so at this point I probably haven't been 'in the loop' for at least a year now. (I'm sure in some part due to crap shows like that.) Bottom line: don't fear the jersey shore, that's all nonsense... It's perfect for TDM Meet and Greet! Since I have the shortest drive -- purely by coincidence -- I'll bring the potato chips. BYOB though.
  19. Damn I'm really out of it. I don't know what that one means, either.
  20. That's top secret or the English will go after him. Just goes to show how much nonsense TV is; I didn't even know who/what 'Snookie' is until I looked it up a minute ago, and I'm only 30 miles from this supposed bed of run-off NYC mob criminal activity.
  21. I've prepared a global distribution map of some of the most active/prominent/visible Dark Modders. Based on this distribution and the resulting median's nearest civilized land, I hereby conclude the meet & greet should take place at the famous New Jersey Shore. Enjoy the boardwalk, beaches, amusement rides, and gambling. Stay at a luxury resort or rent a beachside house. This exciting tourist spot is a mere one hour from dazzling New York City and Historic Philadelphia. Get a tan! See the Statue of Liberty! Get carjacked Visit the historic birthplace of America! Play The Dark Mod! Does this Friday sound good? Great, see you there! Thank you and goodnight; topic locked. Disclaimer: Not actual verified locations. Results may not be accurate. Don't worry about it, just accept the result and move along. Void where prohibited. Checks will not be honored.
  22. I'd just like to quote that for truth. A few times. In a thread many are sure to read. Help.
  23. New Jersey! (not the old one )
