  1. Ah crap. I suppose we'll see Coca Cola signs hoisted up the side of Ngrughakk's Dark Tower of Doom pretty soon. We're already paying through the nose to play the game, without a bunch of immersion breaking promotions sordidly gyrating in front of us. And how dare they use the humble panda, almost wiped out by man for their own capitalist gain, to whore their evil projects. The mere demand for this system shows plainly that most MMORPG players have no girlfriends. When I'm hungry I just ring a small bell next to my PC and my female slave brings me snacks and similar foodstuffs. I joined a WoW guild yesterday, and the guild leader said the most amusing thing: "We don't accept time wasters here!" LOL. There goes your entire guild, mate.
  2. Since my old chair doesn't fit to Atti's dining table, simply because of the style, I started working on a more fancy one. I remembered that the game Pirates of the Caribbean had some really nice looking chairs so I exported the whole room (everything is one mesh in that engine) and picked out the chair. Actually I wanted to remodel the whole thing, but the basic shape of the chair was already ok, same thing with the polycount etc so I decided to simply overwork the existing one. I usually don't rip any anything off, but in that particular case I thought it'd be just a waste of time to remodel the chair if it's already there. here's my overworked model: http://www.thedarkmod.de/intern_screens/d_chair_wip1.jpg original chair: http://www.thedarkmod.de/intern_screens/pirates_chair.jpg I think when the texture is done nobody will ever suspect that the basic shape of the chair is ripped off from Pirates, because it'll look nothing like the original model. So what do you think? Of course one of the modelers could remodel the chair and then everything would be ok, but imho that would be a waste of time in that case.
  3. can someone out there tell me where i can get a good no cd hack or other such thing as the computer i use is shared my 3 year old daughter keeps on putting Reader rabbit in the drive and i am tired of trading disks in and out plus disks may get scratched up if she keeps o putting it out on the desk disks are expensive not using for piracy just don't like to use disks and risk them getting "F"ed up any one else feel like disk being called for during game play is gay...

    Amazing!

well, you all seem to be pretty optimistic and seeing that i'm obviously not the only one to prefer a no-frills hi fidelity soundcard makes me much less worried though i wasn't really fearing not being able to hear something in the game, but rather hearing something i was not supposed to... if you get my point...
  5. Anyone know what it means when your HD LED stays lit even though your computer is idling and shows 1% CPU usage? I'm having a very strange problem where some programs crawl at unbelievably slow speeds...I'm talking five minutes to start up a game that normally takes five seconds. During this time the HD LED stays solidly lit, no flashing or anything. The moment the light goes out the program goes back to regular speeds. The CPU usage usually registers around 50% during the 'frozen' periods. Sometimes the application will show up as not-responding in Windows manager, but other times it says running. I've had this problem before. It seems to come and go randomly, and only seems to affect certain applications. I can't figure it out. I thought cleaning out my spyware last week had fixed it but apparently not. I don't know if it's related to my other problem or not. Now I'm sitting here watching the light stay lit for a good five minutes now while the computer hovers around 1-3% CPU usage, running no other applications besides this one. What the heck could cause this? Could it be related to my IDE check timing out without detecting my HDs on a regular basis when I boot up now?
  6. Civilians wielding weapions is only going to encourage combat with them. There's no enjoyment in killing a cowering one, but fun to be had fighting with one. It's hardly worth the effort of the 'surprise' considering it's only going to work once. The rest of the time the player now knows he can get a fight from a civilian. This leaves no innocents any more, everyone is fair game.

    Forge Workers

Ahh, http, I didn't think of that) Thanks. This is the high res forge worker model BTW, I went ahead and put it in the game without showing anyone)

    Amazing!

hmm, i'd like to know what exactly you mean with that eax hd extension... does it mean that if you decide to take advantage of it, the sound engine of darkmod will be unseparable from eax? meaning that if your sound card doesn't support eax, you won't be able to play the game properly? sorry for those -silly perhaps- questions, i'm not a coder or anything and perhaps i'm way off with my reasoning, but i'm a bit worried, because i've got an m-audio audiophile sound card, which is awesome and all, but doesn't support eax, being a professional sound card made for recording and all... i'm not a big fan of eax, and so far i haven't missed it, but i'd hate not to be able to play that mod just because of that... anyway, thanks in advance for any answers...
  9. Well, as Bunny said, TDS was a game primarily aimed at 12 year old xbox players, not MIT grads. What did you expect?
  10. These are normal people, like civilians,. Normal people don't carry weapons. THey have no fear of attack in their buildings, surrounded by their protective devices, cameras, alarms, traps and safeguards. Anyway , no thief would murder an unarmed scientist. Why would they expecting someone to break in and kill them? THey don't go out either, they have all their stuff delivered. THe townsfolk are all very curious as to what's going on there. We can overhear merchants talking about how they made a delivery to 'those gearheads' and gossip about what they saw glimses of (exaggerated of course) It also makes a nice change to have an unarmed faction in the game.
  11. I agree. I thought the objectives in TDS were boring. "Find 90% of the loot and 3 of the whoopity-frigin-do special items". I prefer to have objectives with a more concrete feel and less of an "automatically generated because you're playing a game" feeling. I think "Find 2000 in loot, 200 in gems, super painting X, chalice Y and artificact Z" is much more interesting. I also missed having secrets and I really loved that sound you get when you find them. I can't remember if you guys have said this before, but will your toolset and your FM have secrets?
  12. Oh shit yes. id like to be able to start a mission or just screw with what you got at the moment. maybe get a layout for a map done and some textures on. then add the rest in as its avalible. My idea: i alwas liked the original thief the best. the game was filled with awsome maps such as hammer cathidrils and giant mansions. i would like to make a manson map like lOrd Baffords then have the objectives lead in to another mission where you have to get in to a hammer cathidrile/base kind of thing. the church wouldnt only be a church tho. more like a place where the hammers live and keep there secrets. its ruff but first things first. Amazing!

I must be odd. I have a 6800 gt an a64 3200 and I still run my games at 1024/768. Most of the time I dont bother with aa either af is normaly stuck at 8* though. The game doesnt have to looked amazing to me as long as its fun. which to me at least, doom3 was and is, so is thief 1 come to that. I would agree though that doom3 can still look great at low resolutions edit : oddly enough my desktop res is 1600/1200 as its easy to edit at that res

    Amazing!

Btw, guys, let me begin by clarifying that I in no way represent id. I was a contractor there, and am no longer. (Actually, I'm at Human Head now working on Prey, so I've still got my nose very much in the tech ) As to id doing something like Make Something Unreal, I couldn't even guess. Hmm, an open source audio engine.. that's a tough one. I'm not a coder, so I can't really comment on what's possible or not. I guess theoretically ANYTHING is possible, but it would seem like a TON of work to me, because I'm guessing that you'd have to gut the original engine completely and code a new one. You're just opening a bag of hell at that point. Think about how tightly integrated the sound engine is with the world geometry, the portaling system, the animation system, func_movables.. I think you'd be better off adding to what's already there than reinventing the wheel. And though I don't know what audio special effects you all want/need from the audio engine, perhaps you should wait to see what future engine revs might bring, particularly from third-party hardware vendors. On lip synching.. gosh, well if you're a team lead and you're deciding what engine to use based on which game shipped with better lip synch anims.. ugh, you've got bigger problems.. Heh, never mind that you can run d3 at 800x600 with all the effects and shaders on and still be totally blown away visually, lip synch or no lip synch.

    Amazing!

Yes, of ALL games I've seen so far, Doom3 (the engine) gives the best results in rendering etc. Once you get used to visportals, making sure minimal lights hit a surface, using patch meshes, and the controls, the editor is really good to work with and in the end makes it all worthwhile - which is what is the most important. I'm really glad ID stays by their old traditions . I still remember Commander Keen - that game was excellent, even today it has it's charm. ID has my respect . --Dram
  16. The grat German nation has decided to not rate the Doom 3 Add On Resurrection Of Evil. The impact of this is that it is not allowed to be sold to people below age of 18. That alone wouldn't really be a problem because D3 had the same limitation. The more negative side effect is though, that the BPjM can censor it, which would mean that it wouldn't be allowed to sell it in Germany or even make ads for it. Most game mags don't even mention the name in the charts. This is totally braindead, because the addon is just more of the D3 gameplay. I could understand if the reason were to prevent players dying from boredome , but considering that D3 was rated and the addon not is totally stupid. But this really isn't suprising. I was watching movies lately where I was totally dumbfounded by the absolutely stupid decision how the movies were rated. One of them was a rather boring movie of aparently "american humour". The "fun" in this movie was derived from two black actors which basically only had to learn a few words to cover their dialogs. Their vocabular throughout the first twenty minutes was 80% cunt, bitch, fuck, etc.. I don't have a problem with swearing, but if the the primary "funfactor" of the movie is to use as many swearwords as possible in as short a time as possible then this is not my kind of fun. I prefer to have more sophisticated fun. Needless to say that this movie was surprisingly rated 12. On the contrary I was watching a movie with Laurence Fishburn, where he acted an ex jail guy who befriended with a young boy (Always Outnumbered). One of the worst scenes in this movie was that another kid was killed (which you couldn't even see). Considering that there are many movies where people are killed (like Indiana Jones, or others), which are also rated 12 I totally couldn't understand why this particular movie was rated 18, because when I would have to decide which one of the movies I would allow my daughter to watch I would take Always Outnumbered any time over the other one. Lord of the Rings was also rated 12 and you could even take 6 year olds with you as long as they were with their parents. Yeah! I know I'm ranting, but I just wanted to show how the rating is done by using some extreme examples. Enough now, because this censoring is one of the things I really hate in Germany. In Austria there is no such thing.
  17. Several things: YOu haven't made a specular or heghtmap for the model. This means you're not taking full advantage of the renderer. I made two rudamentary ones from the colour image and put them on the FTP. You'll need to use this shader models/mymodels/nobleman { noselfshadow diffusemap models/mymodels/nobleman_d.tga bumpmap addnormals(models/mymodels/nobleman_local.tga, heightmap( models/mymodels/nobleman_h.tga, 3 ) ) specularmap models/mymodels/nobleman_s.tga } make a folder called mymodels in your models directory and put the lightwave model and textures in it. Also, you don't need to make a qer_editor image or put it in the shader, doom will just use the first image in the shader. You've been painting shadows and highlights on your texture, but you don't need to do that for doom, just paint it flat, and the specualr is produced by doom according to the spec, normal and heightmaps. Also notice the 'noselfshadow' line I put at the start of the shader, you need this to stop the model casting a shaow on itself, which is what your problem was. I had to change the size of the model as well, since it was the height of a child in doom, I'm not sure if that's becasue of the max units you modeled it in. The best way to see it in the game is to add a func_rotating to the map and attach this model to it, setting the speed to about 20.
  18. lol, I know for a fact that his 3 friends all aged 8-10 have the same game.
  19. My sister bought her 8 year old son GTA San Andreas for Christmas. THat 's rated 18) As far as she's concerned game = for kids, period.
  20. Yeah, the first few hours were quite painful, I almost gave up on the game. Then it started to get better and better..
  21. Gothic I had a better plot, but I thought Gothic II had more interesting and varied enviroments. I wouldn't say GII was just a quick grab for the bucks simply because it wasn't vastly different from it's predecessor, it's obvious alot of thought and care went into every aspect of the game.
  22. I don't think it actually does that. I think the game designers give each room a reverb variable. It doesn't calculate reverb realtime from millions of reflections and repeated reflections... I don't think any realtime sound engine can do that. As for hindering soundprop, I don't see why it would? I don't rely at all on the existing D3 engine as is, don't see why I would have to rely on the sound engine once it gets EAX.
  23. Funny thing is that I do the same. I download from "dubious" sources and only have a firewall since aboiut a year, but only because it is part of the router, not because I thought it neccessary. In more then ten years I had only one or two virii, ond one of them was installed because of a fault of mine. I was analyzing it and hit the run button in the debugger instead of canceling it, when I was finished. Whats even more funny is: I was running Hidden and Dangerous some years ago on my machine. It didn't work properly and because I couldn't find a solution I decided to give the helpline a try (something I never do and never will do again). The result was that I had to reinstall my entire machine because of the things, the guy told me to do. I knew that this wouldn't work, but I gave it a try anyway. After my machine was screwed up enough because of the "helpfull tips" of the helpline, I was forced to reinstall. Needless to say that the game still didn't work. But I had a pirtated copy which worked fine. The guy on the helpline told me it is my gfxdriver and moboard and whatnot, even though I told him all along that the priated version works fine. THe only response that got was that he told me he has to sue me if I continue to use the pirated version. I told him he should try that. Well, so much for "priated versions only have virii and create problems". Usually it's the other way around.
  24. We do have some arrow_swoosh sounds on cvs. Didn't you add those to the in-game weapons recently? How did that work out?
  25. Map designers are really making their own little mods with our big mod. THey can change almost anythig to suit themselves. We have to make decisions on what we're settign as the default and stick to them, otherwise the game will never be released. It would be simple to move the bow over so you can aim with your knickles, I'm not against it. I've never shot a bow so I don't have a legitimate opinion on the subject. All I can say is, that it is not difficult at all to aim the way it is now. No sights are required.
