  1. The first seven Jordan wheel of time books were ok but he is very long winded and seems to have serious issues regarding women. The last what four books now just seems like filler and not that much happens of interest despite the page count. The prequel was allot better (winters heart iirc) so you never know the next book may be better. edit: spelling
  2. You've got a pretty warped brain if you think a cure everything magic drink is easier to accept than a bandage. The only reason it makes sense to you is because it's been used in almost every game ever made in the last 25 years, so you've been brainwashed into thinking it's a good idea. We ain't gonna win no awards for innovation, that's for damn sure:/
  3. They just started showing them on BBC2 agin last night, I haven't seen it in 15 years. t's a pity for Adams he isn't around to reap all the benefits of the big upcoming movie.
  4. I don't think anyone has taken on the last three things Atti uploaded (washbin etc) Why not start with those since they're on the ftp already?
  5. I liked having the option of using breath potions. Otherwise, the FM author is nearly forced to make a plethora of helpful little air pockets for underwater excursions. Going down a long dead-end underwater tunnel with no air pockets and then using a breath potion to frantically find your way to the next air pocket that is several meters away is much more appealing to me than having air pockets placed strategically every 4 seconds; which would undoubtedly happen if breath potions aren't available. (Eww, just had a flashback to T3's shadow paths which guided you through levels.) I liked invisibility potions much more than slow-fall or speed potions. Gameplaywise I enjoyed the fact that you could totally sneak up on (or by) someone. Was fun for me. My only complaint for the Invisibility and Speed potions is their effects didn't last long enough. I vote to include all T2 potions, otherwise we'll stir up controversy.
  6. I've always preferred writing to reading, really. I want to write a full novel in English at some point. If I'm going to continue writing novels in Welsh I'm going to have to make some extra money on the side to buy that kind of time. You can get grants to write novels in Welsh, but they're only enough to last you about three weeks, and you probably wouldn't have a job by the time you finished. I think I'll write a steampunk adventure set in a futuristic prohibition era city, where a teetotaler called Renzatic must bust up the smuggling ring run by the mysterious gangster known only as 'Fingernail', who is protected by his two vicious henchmen, the mysterious artist/assassin Springheel and the angry Irishman oDDity. He is helped in his quest by the chief of police Sparhawk, the technical expert Ishtvan, and the young photographer Dram, who dreams of getting his big break and moving to sunnier climes downunder (he leaves on a giant zeppalin at the end of the novel). Renz' partner in all of this is Goldfish, who sighs an apathetic 'meh' at the thought of tackling crime and instead enjoys life down in the local Speakeasy. During his quest Renzatic loses sight of his goals in life and sinks into an alcaholic depression, before the reformed New Horizon sobers him up and sets him back to work.
  7. I would say keep speed and air, speed as a last minute escape tool, which rarely pops up in our campaign, air for said past reasons. Invisibility and slow fall are pretty ridiculous, even in the a world such as we are using, as well as in terms of gameplay.
  8. Anyone know what it means when your HD LED stays lit even though your computer is idling and shows 1% CPU usage? I'm having a very strange problem where some programs crawl at unbelievably slow speeds...I'm talking five minutes to start up a game that normally takes five seconds. During this time the HD LED stays solidly lit, no flashing or anything. The moment the light goes out the program goes back to regular speeds. The CPU usage usually registers around 50% during the 'frozen' periods. Sometimes the application will show up as not-responding in Windows manager, but other times it says running. I've had this problem before. It seems to come and go randomly, and only seems to affect certain applications. I can't figure it out. I thought cleaning out my spyware last week had fixed it but apparently not. I don't know if it's related to my other problem or not. Now I'm sitting here watching the light stay lit for a good five minutes now while the computer hovers around 1-3% CPU usage, running no other applications besides this one. What the heck could cause this? Could it be related to my IDE check timing out without detecting my HDs on a regular basis when I boot up now?
  9. I had an idea that since these guys are non combat civilians really, and they are protected by their machines, what happenes when one spots you is that they run to the nearest alarm switch and press it, which brings the combat bots out on patrol, and makes a lot of secuirty gates close over all the doors. Now, the security gates will open automaticaly for the patroling bots, so you'll have to try and squeeze past them when your opportunity arises. This security state can last for n minutes based on gameplay testing, but if you trip the secutity 3 times, it's permenant.
  10. Personally I have no objection. I put this to discussion to the team, so this will take a little until I get responses, but I don't really expect any objections. After all this is also motivating for us (at least for me) when I can see that somebody already puts to good use what we created the last months (even though it is not finished).
  11. I know what you mean. And that's exactly why I say that I have to consider my child as a parent. I know my child, and I know which of them I can allow to see what. It's not that I say all my kids may see this, because they are quite different, and movies that are ok for one daughter is not suitable of rmy other daughter. But I can give you another example. Last Nicolaus there was Polar Express in the cinema. It was rated 6. This was rather annoying, because we were going to ride a train and I thought this would be a nice idea to watch this movie, and on the next day we are riding with such a train ourself. When I went to the cinema, they asked how old my younger one was. She was 5 so she was denied which was absolutely ridicoulous. When I complained they said something like "It is your decision if you allow your daughter to watch SUCH movies at home, but you are not allowed to enter the cinema." I mean. They were acting as if this was a zombie movie I wanted to force on my daughter. Now I watched this movie with my kids and there was aboslutely no problem, but I knew that already in that case anway. At the same time, my daughter would be allowed next year to watch Lord Of The Rings in the cinema provided that I go with her. This is absolutely ridicoulous, because LOTR is MUCH more violent, and I wouldn't allow her to watch this, because I know that she cant stand it. My other daughter is quite different, because even when she was six, I could watch with her LOTR in the cinema and she had no problems with it. When I was a kid I loved to see Western or Bud Spencer movies. They are also violent, if you think about it, but I never thought of them as being violent, because they were fun. James Bond is pretty similar, even though this is more "real" then Bud Spencer movies. The bottom line is, when I know my kids, I know what they can handle and what not. But these laws are IMO pretty stupid, because this is just censorship. It's ok, if the cinema uses this as a recomendation and to not let them in when they are alone, to be on the safe side, because the cinema doesn't know my kids. But if I as a parent decide that a particular movie is suitable, then they should let me in, provided this is not a clear case. If I would go into Return of The Dead with my 6 year old daughter I could understand this. I could even have accepted in case of LOTR, but Polar Express??? Come on. This is just patronizing for the sake of patronizing and not because there is a real reason behind it.

  13. greetings! not a big thing but i noticed that the last updates you guys posted here on the forum are not yet featured in the respective Screenshots/Gallery sections of the main page. makes it rather hard to find certain things fast. and yes, convenience rules all. kind regards gleeful
  14. Wow. I never run it. Funny, last time i caught a virus that kept coming up no matter what i did. I stopped it in the end. I deleted all of its files (along with some windows files) then my mouse did'nt respond...no keyboard, etc. Had to reinstall. Now i use desktop armour which says if any changes are made to the registry, and The Cleanr to change it all back Oh yeah, mine's clean.
  15. Just passing by, and I thought I would see how well things are going on the mod. I can see you've made some great progress since I last came here, which was a while ago. I was on your team very briefly, but unfortunately had to leave for various reasons. Btw I noticed that Tyrot is not on your team list anymore. Did he leave the mod as well?
  16. I've been working on this VIIC U-boat for the last couple of days.Still WIP. Tell me what you think of it please:) the 2 30mm AA guns and the 88 deck gun (WIP) Cobra 6
  17. I haven’t posted any images, or got any work done today as I had to reformat my computer. I had a very nasty crash no doubt brought about by running dromed, doom edit, winamp, painshop pro, gimp, mozilla and powerdvd all at the same time. Yes a duel ( is it duel or dual? sorry to be thick) core cpu would be nice But the upshot of this is that the map I was working on, the backup, and strangely half the other files in my map dir were corrupted and windows refused to boot except in safe mode where it promptly crashed. To save several hours I just formatted and I now have everything up and running again. Now its not all bad as I, luckily, have a back up from last night so I just lost a little work today but on to the request. Can someone with knowledge of the archaic language of dos write me a .bat file, or rather just tell me how, that will make a backup of my map dir on start-up? I know how to set the start-up to work but I don’t know how to make dos backup a dir. Does anyone know? Thanks p.s. I wasn’t sure if I should post this in general or not
  18. Allowing only 1 response, voting sooner and closing the topic before discussions like this is something I'm not a big fan of. We've all seen posts mis-read or misinterpreted and the point of the post lost. Without allowing more responses, I just fear people not being allowed to present and discuss their case very well. It may now be time for a vote for this one, but to force a vote too early on in discussions is bad. People don't get to speak their mind enough; readers don't get to hear both sides enough. I was gone for a week; had we decided to vote last weekend, my voice wouldn't be heard or counted. Not that anyone here cares about my voice/vote, but it's just one of those things. I think anyone who feels passionate about something would feel short-changed.
  19. My parents always eat fast food. Arghh...it drives me crazy. Had to eat at a shop yesterday while I was helping them find a new car. I hadn't eaten it since I worked at the call centre and got this massive headache afterwards. In my last year working at the call center I got hooked on Kentucky Fried Chicken...it was just down the street and made a fast meal. Well, jump ahead 8 months. Gained thirty pounds and I started losing circulation in my right arm. Yeah, fast food. Ergh. Gave it up immediately. No way I'm going to thirty with circulation issues.
  20. ATM I'm trying to improve my "textures totally from scratch" skills, so I continued making those T2 style textures - here's my work of the last 1 1/2 hours - a classic Thief 2 style ceiling. Hope you'll like it - critism welcome I think it'll turn out pretty good ingame with a proper normalmap.
  21. ...and yet (continuing on from my last post) I'm still openminded to these things, and Fingernail made it sound fun. But once it gets used, everyone will use it, and it won't be a surprise anymore. We'd just have to trust FM authors to use it very sparingly. No doubt we'd develop another "I don't play X" missions group of players, where they won't touch a mission that has guns in it, much like some dont like undead missions.
  22. Sorry to re-post, I just wanted to respond more clearly to Oddity: So you're proposing that blackpowder didn't exist on our continent, say, but it has recently become available thru trade with another land. This is believable, I'll admit. However, what I was trying to argue is: Think about how long it would take the Mechanites to make a modern firearm after getting their hands on the formulation for black powder from this other land? With their knowledge of mechanics, I don't think it would take longer than a few years. At that point, guns would become the driving force of change in our setting instead of Steam. @Macsen: I don't think you can class steambots as "supernatural" and guns as "not." (Unless we specifically say that steambots work with magic.. I prefer to leave it unexplained myself ) They are both what I'd call "alternate history." IE, modern developments that were developed much earlier in the overall history of technology than they were in real-world history. The thing that makes the bots fun (IMO) is that they were developed by a Victorian society, hand crafted to look like fearsome creatures instead of say modern tanks. I guess that's kind've what Steampunk is all about: earlier advances in technology that take place in a different society, with the values of "earlier" societies on our world (e.g., dueling, honor, aristocracy, fascination with the supernatural, etc). [EDIT] More reasons I don't like guns from a gameplay perspective: Why couldn't the player use one? I know we are being stealthy, but suppose you KO one guard carrying a pistol who didn't get a shot off (so it's still loaded and ready to fire). The guard's unconscious body knocks some stuff over as it falls and alerts 5 close by guards in other rooms who all run into your room. So we have a fire arrow as a "last resort" for this situation. I would think it would be completely rational for the player to pick up the dropped pistol and take a shot at the first guard thru the door, who might also be armed with a pistol. At that point tho, the game might as well be an FPS. Actually I think this would be kind've interesting to play as a third party FM, if the gun was well-done, aimed with iron sights (not a crosshair) and inaccurate and everything, but I would rather keep guns out of our "standard" setting.
  23. Whatever it is, if you have some kind of backup software like Ghost, I'd use it now. I had what was obviously the beginning of HD problems last year, and figured to myself "Ah shit. Well, I guess over the next couple of weeks, I'll have to start transferring stuff to the other PC." Wrong. It took all of 2 more bootups for the HD to go unusable. Cascade failure!
  24. I agree with you in principle, Oddity. But putting things in perspective, you have to see that none of this (your ideas, your models, the coding, the artwork, the themes, the gameplay) might not have been even a thought had LGS not made a game called Thief. I think even the few ideas that you've shared with the rest of us are sound and interesting, but they sound more like expansions on an already established set of gameplay dynamics than innovations. Can you honestly say that if Thief was never made, you would have eventually been moved to create this type of game yourself, replete with your "hardcore and realistic" gameplay features, and your well crafted models and textures, which seem hauntingly like a game I once played.... I'm not trying to imply you don't have the creativity or the drive (your models alone can put that argument to bed), I'm just asking you to honesty admit to yourself from where the wellspring of inspiration originates. All that aside, like it or not, everyone is looking forward to this Mod not just because you're a group of talented so-and-so's (which you are), or because they want a fresh, innovative, never-before-experienced experience, but because they want a farmiliar feeling they lost when TDS was made. If you forget that, you will be alienating everyone who is supporting you (monitarily, spiritually, creatively, or otherwise). Your fanbase consisits primarily of Thief fans. You know what happened when the guys who created the series forgot that. This may sound overreaching, but even with the T3 editor in the hands of many other talented so-and-so's, you guys are the last bastion of "Thief" there will ever be. I know it sounds trite. But it's the truth. Hylix.
  25. *pulling the old thread out of the tomb* As you certainly noticed I wasn't very active the last week(s), I'm very sorry of this, but I've got several problems - a) my 'old' workflow (uvw-mapping the objects in blender and then convert them to lwo) doesn't work properly anymore and I've absolutely no clue why - faces are screwed up, colours don't fit anymore etc. b ) second thing is RL - the next three weeks are going to be really stressfull, so I won't have much time to work for TDM, which is of course a very untimely, since the milestone is approaching. anyway I'll probably work on some brush textures in my very limited freetime and hope, that I'll be completely "back" after the next three weeks.
