Flashing bottom l/h corner ?

First off... Many thanks to everyone involved in this. I've been watching the site for quite a while.

Just having a minor problem, and that's an annoying flashing square in the bottom l/h corner of the screen.

I've had a look through the f.a.q. and various posts regarding flashing screens, but I could not find anything regarding this (or I missed it)

Amd x64 6000+ 4gb 256mb dual 8600gt Win7 x64. My drivers are pretty much up to date, just not using the very latest nvidia ones as I don't get colour when switching to a second screen for some reason with them.

I did have the same problem when I first tried the St. Lucia mission ages ago and just put it down to being a pre beta.

Any help, advice, info or a link to the thread with the answer that I missed would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

I don't think it's the light gem as that's in the middle at the bottom. I cannot remember from Thief what is normally displayed down there.. weapons ??

I did try for a screen shot, but print screen just gave me a blank screen. I'll try again and if no joy I'll stick a short fraps video and link to it.

Cheers for the replies.

I can see this is going to be "one of those problems"

Tried for a screenshot again and keep getting just a grey screen, so used fraps to video it... and the video runs perfectly... without the flashing square that I see in game...sigh.

Just to help make things even stranger the flashing is not a solid box, but it appears to be made of 4 triangles all of a slightly different contrast making the square with the 4 points meeting in the middle. Sorry that's not a wonderful description.

The best I can do at the moment is a screenshot of the fraps video and I've highlighted the area that flashes with a yellow box... To save bandwidth it's a clickable thumbnail.

Off to see what happens with any weapons as only started with the training mission and lock picking so far.

Tried with the shortsword and it shows clearly and stable behind the flashing "square/4 triangles". This flashing area goes from the lower l/h corner and covers almost all of the sword icon. The r/h edge is in between with the "r" and "d" in sword and the top is about 1mm above the tip of the sword icon. I'm going to boot back into XP SP2, install in there and see what happens. I'm guessing this is going to be down to something strange in my hardware... Oh well... Will let you know how it goes in XP in a bit. Cheers for the time and help....

This is connected to the lightgem calculations--it's a small render shot of how much light is hitting the player 'diamond' model. I recall seeing it before, a couple years ago, but I don't recall how it was fixed.

That's a bonus that someone even knows what I'm on about and has seen it before. There "might" be hope yet.... Cheers

Cannot find any other settings (buffering or otherwise)to mess with that makes any difference, but it does appear to be linked to the light gem as it gets a lot brighter as the gem does and different sections of the triangles light up more than others. Sorry Komag, looks like you were right all along.

What is the value of the CVAR <b>tdm_lg_hud

Sorry to ask basic questions, but not that up to speed on various commands for this game.

Is that found via the console, or shown in a log file somewhere. If it's the console what command do I type to get the answer... Cheers

Ok, this settings is fine then. Can you check the nvidia control panel for triple buffering? Have you tried switching off Aero and/or desktop composition (in the tdmlauncher shortcut properties, section Compatibility)?

256mb dual 8600gt

Hm, I don't remember anyone testing with a dual graphic card combo yet. It might well screw things up, but then I am not sure we are even able to fix this.

Triple buffering both on and off Aero automatically disables on starting, but reverted back to basic just in case Enabled running in compatibility mode xp sp2 and as admin earlier, added the desktop comp as well Disabled SLI so should run as a single card Still the same flashing square once the mission starts. Going to try in XP later and see what happens. Many thanks again for all the help with this... especially as I've just joined the forum in here.

Rebooted into XP SP2 installed and it runs fine.. no flashing from the corner. So it's got to be something in my Win7 install. I'll just have to keep messing around. At least I can play it now, just have to re-boot each time. Thanks for all the help and I hope I haven't wasted too much of anyone's time. Cheers

Could be a driver issue related to Vista/Win7's new driver model. Try updating (or downgrading!) your drivers on Win7.

It's only supposed to render that lightgem image to the backbuffer, and not flip it onto the screen. In most cases that works fine. Using off-screen buffers to store the rendered image would be better, of course; that will probably be doable once D3 goes open source.

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
