Training Mission candle light bug?

Hello!

This is my first post here, so first of all I should express my feelings about The Dark Mod.

IT'S AMAZING! God, I was living blind without any knowledege of it. I'm huge fan of Thief world and now when I found this Mod... it's living again.

Thanks people for your efford. I'll let you know when I'm ready to help (I'm IT engineer). Now to the topic

 

After some tweaking actions now my TDM installation works quite well, but one or two things are still bugging me.

 

First, the candle light in Training mission. Please have a look at the video (20 sec). First candle in Lockpicking chamber, this unmovable one.

Is this light suppose to look like this? Is this a bug?

 

 

-Athlon x2 245, radeon 4850, winxp

-Catalyst AI disabled, no bloom, no AA

-tdm and the mission downloaded again from another source

-no more ideas

 

Can anyone help?

I confirm it's doing that for me too but it's hard to believe it did that originally. The actual candlestick and candle should be no shadows I think. My first guess was that a definition has been changed in one of the updates but it's hard to see what unless the candleflame was made to oscillate more and it's clipping into the candle now. Maybe the candle model made slightly bigger.

Tels made some changes that made older candlestick entities start casting shadows when they didn't used to. I've seen that in Outpost as well. I don't recall why it was necessary to leave them like that.

Almost all of the lights on the training mission are not true combo entities, rather light/flame bound to movables manually. So the flame entity seems to have been updated as to where it moves about, ending up with it intersecting with the candle base. This has most likely been addressed in the correct combo entity def, but wouldn't effect something a mapper manually made.

 

I spent a bit of time converting them correctly in my revised version. Guess this does indicate I should finish that off and update the released version :)

I remember now; it's not the flame position, it's that the candlestick didn't used to cast shadows. Tels implemented a system that turns the candlestick shadow on once the light is put out, but it required candlesticks to have a shadow on by default, instead of off.

Ah, that would make sense too. Still the same fix at least :)

Hm, yeah, I was advisign against that but it seems people didn't listen :)

 

Anyway, if you fix the training map, could you please use the already updated version? I forgot who sent it to me (might have been you, oops! My memory is so bad :(

It was already extended a bit. I think this version still doesn't use the new location system and it still have the home-grown message system instead of the new one, but these things can be fixed at the same time.

 

Would be cool if we could update the training mission for v1.03.

Looks like it's mine, tho I've fixed various other things since that version :)

That's great to know that is not a problem with my hardware/system/tdm installation. That's also good to know that someone is going to fix/improve the Training mission.

I think it is important to refine the mission because it is a part of "first impression" to many people (as it was to me).

Looking forward to playing the new version! :)

don't wait around for the new training mission, go play some awesome FM's like NHAT, Caduceus, Glenham Tower, or HoLS!! Also for future reference, if you find any more bugs, maybe refrain from the youtube posts. Someone recently brought it up that bug videos just don't seem to advocate the TDM cause very well, and I'm tempted to agree. Lets keep the publicity positive.

      Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

      i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
      tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
