Evening

Just in the middle of building my new Core i5 system, but what has prompted me to post is that TDM actually runs sorta OK on the Intel iGPU which completely surprised me!

Relevant specs:

  • Core i5 2500k@4.2Ghz turbo
  • On-Cpu Intel HD3000@1400Mhz
  • 8GB DDR3-2133Mhz
  • Asus P8Z68-V mobo
  • TDM@ 1680*1050, 0xAA, 8XAS, (AR/IS/PP - simple/default/off)

Training mission Average - 20FPS

Now that's mighty impressive I gotta say, what is also impressive is even with DR & TDM running on dual screens the CPU/iGPU are both only 35-40c on the stock intel cooler(the fan at full is silent!)

I know that with integrated video cards it is normal to have low frames, but I do not think all this magnificence to have 20 FPS.

This is generally unplayable framerate.

At the end you always need the dedicated video card to play it properly.

Therefore, in my opinion, the video card integrated into the processor is useless unless it is mounted on a laptop.

20 is playable for me. I can play as low as 12-15 if necessary.

That's pretty awesome with that GPU. If I remember running doom3 off my integrated a long time ago and I got about .3 fps

Oh, yeah, my old Intel GPU on the laptop produced 0.1 FPS, and once we switched to compressed textures, everything was black (and not even faster..)

From memory, the 2600k (my cpu) onCPU gpu is roughly a 8400gt, I think the 2500k one is the same or very slightly worse... crazy man... GPU inside a CPU... what will they think of next.. a NIC inside a CPU with a GPU?

Intel Sandy Bridge i7 2600K @ 3.4ghz stock clocks
8gb Kingston 1600mhz CL8 XMP RAM stock frequency
Sapphire Radeon HD7870 2GB FLeX GHz Edition @ stock @ 1920x1080

The actual Intel i5 (-K series) and i7 (-K series) GPU are good: they can be overclocked too!

The REAL problem is the memory management: they don't have a dedicated memory and they access to DDR3 system memory through the 64/virtual 128 (dual channel) bit bus.

Other problem is the video drivers cycle develepment: Intel needs to follow the ForceWare/Catalyst model :P

Echelon, I've been around the block a few times and have played ultra-smooth 60fps plenty, it's very nice and I love it, but I'm willing to put up with lower framerates to a certain extent. I think most folks on these forums could live with 20 - they might not love it, but it would be playable

but I think that anyone who buys a i5/i7 of last generation, it does so because he wants also take (at least) a HD6870/GTX560 to take minimally advantage of processor. Otherwise a dual core as an E8400 would be already too wasted.

If Intel make a complete OpenGL 2.x or 3.x driver for the integrated GPU (OpenCL driver for CPU is already released and is very good, hope for GPU support in Ivy Bridge) the processor *only* is a real a good platform for development (not pure gaming of course), thanks to video compression QuickSync capabilities too.

And paradoxically, Intel DirectX driver are really good with old '90 games, with excellent compatibility: http://moddercove.bl...to-mancato.html

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
