The new script stops the map from crashing, but I haven't been able to get the effect to work yet. How does the targeting work? In the testmap I sent, for example, I can't get the light to turn on when I look at the AI. Is the "target" spawnarg supposed to go directly on the AI?

I've meant whether you have included the script in the tdm_custom_scripts.script file.

Argh, fuck, sorry, it's my fault.

 

I forgot to mention that you have to set two spawnargs on the ai.

 

  • tol_angle - the maximum value of the angle between the players viewing direction and the direction towards the ai to activate the script
  • tol_distance - the maximum distance between player and ai to activate the script

I didn't implement default values for those like in the original script so not setting them will cause the script to never get activated. Setting those values will make it work.

Obs, could you take a look at this map if you have a chance? I'm having difficulty with the look_script spawnargs.

 

Inside the safe is a scroll that uses the look_script to trigger a text message on the screen.

 

When I include the spawnarg, "distance" "300", then the message plays as soon as the player turns and looks at the safe. But if I change the value to "250" or less, the message will not play at all, no matter how close to the scroll I get. I don't understand quite what's going on. I only want the message to play when the player is very close to the scroll. Currently it's set to 250.

The tolerance value set on the entity using the script. It defines how big the angle between the players viewing direction and the direction towards the object can be.

 

Or, to be more precise: playerLooksAtEntity if cosine(alpha)>1-eps, where alpha is said angle.

 

Mathematicians tend to refer to small, positive values as eps. :)

This is the bit from the wiki:

 

- "entityname": The entity to react to (default is player1, thus meaning the player) - "stim": the stim used to enable this object (default is PLAYER_STIM) - "distance": how close the entity must be (default: 1024) - "tolerance": describes how exact the player (or another entity) must look (default: 0.1) - "once": if set to one, the entity will trigger it's targets only once (default: 0)

 

 

What value should I set for "tolerance"? I'm not sure how to interpret a default value of 0.1

The tolerance is one minus the cosine of the angle that is allowed to be between the players viewing direction and the direction towards the object.

I looked up the definition of cosine. It didn't help.

 

Let's say I want the player to be able to trigger the object as long as it is within a 90 degree xy arc of the direction he is looking. What value would I set "tolerance" to?

      Today I did a bit of an experiment! I wanted to see if I could get a dark radiant map into garry's mod, the quickest and dirtiest and not-workiest method is "OBJ2VMF" which converts .obj models into VMF files for hammer to then compile, the way its supposed to work is that you input a 6 sided cube and it turns it into a 6 brush room (not exactly ideal for this since that's not how TDM maps work, this honestly would have been a better idea with any thief game from 1 to the one from 2014 since they all work like that) so what ended up happening was that for every brush there was 6 brushes would be ontop of that almost inflating everything in the map like a balloon, map scale was also an issue that I couldn't fine-tune easily either so the scale is way off ontop of everything being inflated making the space inside the map very tiny! anyways heres the result of that and it looks almost nothing like footloose (plus I did add a bunch of random props in gmod for funsies and better visibility since the process involved replacing all the textures with dev ones that look very flat when in full-bright)
