Video briefings

I don't know 100℅ but taking an educated guess I'd say due to copyright infringement issues the answer is sadly no :-(

Unless you mean making your own then yeah sure other people have done that before. Check out Sothas Lich Queens Demise FM for example

He's not talking about using videos 'from' Thief 1 and 2 but rather creating and using videos like Thief 1 and 2 did.

Read the second sentence of my post :P

If you notice levels always play the TDM logo at the start. That's a placeholder video you can put your own video in your pk4 with the same filename, and then it plays your briefing video automatically & you don't even have to do any extra work. Just pack it in your pk4 & it plays!

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Actually, you must have a separate audio track. You see, the audio and video are separate files.

This is not a problem, though, most video editing programs allow you to render (?) the audio track into a separate file.

I used kdenlive, which is a fantastic piece of free software, for the LQD briefing.

The audio file must be in ogg format, encoded with vorbis. The video file has to be a roq. The file handling the briefing says that the video files must be seperated into parts of one minute length or so, but you can ignore that, as it is not true.

I think there is a wiki entry handling this topic. Just search for briefing/cutscene.

If you want to learn more, you could examine the LQD package.

IIRC, from the video editor, I exported my briefing into 1 min .avi (1024x768 resolution, 30 fps) fragments. Then I converted the avi into roq utilizing the "avconv" program. Command (avconv -i test.avi -r 30 -s 512x512 test.roq). Note that 1024x768 video was converted to 512x512 resolution. Looks nice on widescreen monitors, but not so nice in non-widescreen.

After that I just placed the roq files into my mission folders, made material definitions for them (check briefing.mtr) and made custom gui files.

mainmenu_custom_defs.gui tells the briefing which materials to play in the video and how long each fragment lasts (time).

I had to also supply a special mainmenu_briefing_video.gui and mainmenu_objectives.gui. The first one was to prevent the empty text-based briefing page from appearing after the video. The latter was to fix some kind of bug in the briefing, which broke the briefing if the player interrupted it with esc and tried to see it again, which may have been fixed in TDM 2.0.

Thanks, that's very instructive. I take it then that the limit is in fact a minute?

Well, why would it say so in the documentation? I assumed that writing such stuff means that is how things are. ;)

Maybe someone should test?

The limit isn't that severe, all you gotta do is cleave your briefing so that it is in pieces smaller than 1 min.

How do you think the 1 min limitation is not true?

Because I made a video that is more then three minutes long, and it plays in its whole length.

Hah! Now that is the best kind of proof, I suppose. ;)

I wonder why the documentation incorrectly says otherwise...

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.
