tools for writing to dds file

I want to add something to the existing gui dds files what are the tools for that?

paint.net can write dds files, so can gimp 2.

Regarding paint.NET and Gimp, either I am doing something wrong but both those dont seem to save the best quality compared to even an old version of Photoshop.

Er, that isnt a graphics application all that will do is create archives not a proper .DDS image file.

sorry, I meant to word my question like , "how do I append dds files I created into the existing pk4 archive?". I got it all sorted now.

I used AMD's Compressonator for dds compression. I did small comparison with GIMP. I saved dds files to png for convenience.

The compressonator:

 

All dxt1 dds with mipmaps are 42,8 KB. Saved as PNG GIMP's versions are heavier. That's probably because they seem to have slightly more noise and AMD's are smoother. But the difference is not huge.

The guys making the Overdose indie game, made on "idtech 2", released their tools for the public, in there theres a tool called ODCompress that automatically detects your .tga's and convert them to the respective .dds format very cool.

p.s - Do not use the compression option of the .tga format this tool do not like it.
