_dhewm 3_ is a _Doom 3_ GPL source modification.

The goal of _dhewm 3_ is bring _DOOM 3_ with the help of SDL to all suitable

platforms.

Bugs present in the original _DOOM 3_ will be fixed (when identified) without

altering the original gameplay.

**The project is hosted at:** https://github.com/dhewm

# CHANGES

Compared to the original _DOOM 3_, the changes of _dhewm 3_ worth mentioning are:

- 64bit port

- SDL for low level OS support, OpenGL and input handling

- OpenAL for audio output, all OS specific audio backends are gone

- OpenAL EFX for EAX reverb effects (read: EAX on all platforms)

- Better support for widescreen (and arbitrary display resolutions)

- A portable build system based on CMake

- (Cross-)compilation with mingw-w64

Thus far, this is not DLL mod friendly as I recall so you would get Vanilla Doom 3 and custom maps, scripts, textures and shaders but no mod

which uses the traditional gamex86.dll. For end-users, unless you are absolutely nuts for seeing positional audio in vanilla Doom 3 and you never

experienced Doom 3 with EAX, there's not much to this. But it's a nice code cleanup for fork projects to reference.

Yeah, Daniel didn't like the DLL arrangement and (to be fair) it isn't the cleanest way to go but his alternative of converting mods into

replacements for the entire Game section of the Doom 3 executable isn't quite right either:

It's cool that each mod get's it's own standalone executable (just like TDM!) but then you basically have to ask Daniel to include the mod you want

into his project or figure out how to merge your mod code. It means that players have to wait for eternity to get the mods they want if they ever get them.

Still it's out there as an option and if enough folks raise their voices for stuff like the Ruiner etc then it will get built.

So maybe, in the process, they get updated too.....and it's a good thing.

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
