Tree Beasts?

Dram

Recommended Posts

In Blackheart Manor I'm going to need tree beasts, I intend to make them myself etc, so does anyone have any strong feelings against including them? I plan on modelling them etc while I'm in CZ.

Essentially just posting ahead so I let everyone know wtf I'm doing/planning on doing.

Tree beasts,

were those the big hulking things in TDS?

I don't remember seeing them in TG or T2

I could always use more pagan monsters in my hedgemaze map.

There was something similar in TDS, but like almost everything in TDS...they were poorly done and looked more comical than scary. Treebeasts were in the Thief 2 mission, Trail of Blood.

Yeah, tree beasts were in Trail of Blood, and were done really well, as they stood idly like a tree (and looked like one too in that pose) but if you moved past it in the light it would kind of give of a sound of something like creaking/growling and would then start chasing you. It freaked me out the first time I saw them, as this was before I had read Lord of the Rings, nor seen the movies etc, so it was a new concept at the time that a tree could be alive and attack, hence I did not expect it.

Yeah, that sounds badass.

I'd love to have those. I can think of a few spots where they can go

Hehe, indeed :)

I'll also make several trees which look very very similar to the tree beasts so that they are camouflaged amongst the trees. Otherwise they would stick out like a sore thumb amongst different looking trees.

Yeah sure! If you have some nice hi-res tree bark goodness it would definitely help in getting them done :)

Does that mean there will be more hi-res trees?

Thanks very much Arc, downloading now...

Yes, as well as Tree Beasts. I'm going to mainly make trees that are about as large as the tree beasts, but they will be expansive as well - in the sense that they will be wide, thick trees with vines, leaves etc.

Here's an inspirational shot I found on DeviantArt for the modeler:

This is just an opinion/suggestion but I think that it would be wise not to put an actual face on the Treebeast like they did in the LoTR movies.

But whatever you want to do...

  • 4 weeks later...

I remember the first time I saw the treetbeasts in T2. I would walk up to the trees and look at them and notice a sound, but I couldn't quite figure out what it was. I walked right out in the open following the blood and was running towards the end of the map and turned around to see a hoard of treebeasts coming after me. I kept running because I was almost there and the map ended with me cowering on the ground in fear with trees on all sides thrashing me (it did let me complete the mission though funnily enough). It scared the every loving crap out of me because I had no idea they even existed. You don't get to imbue that moment on someone twice, but man it sure works great once.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )
