  1. No change in FPS from 2xAA to 8xAA seems like either the setting is not doing anything or the game is extremely easy to run and with the lighting and shadows we know that isn't accurate. Something is not right. Modern cards have no trouble running high levels of AF but AA in its normal form still has a large performance impact. AA done in shaders is much less so but conventional AA is a performance hog and always has been.
  2. This thread was moved from: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/16628-opengl-perf-on-amdati-gpus-wip-fix/ in case anyone is wondering how any of the below text relates. ==================================================================================================== I personally can not comprehend why many of the posters are running AAx8, especially at 1920x1080. The difference between 4x > 6x > 8x at that resolution is hardly discernible particularly when you're actually moving around playing and not just staring at the screen looking for visual nuances. As motosep also said, it "murders" performance. The memory requirements from 4xAA > 8x are doubled and the amount of calculations the GPU has to do is also increased substantially. If you exceed the physical memory limitations of your card, how can it keep up? Playing at 1920x1200 I've never seen a substantial visual gain going over 4x and I just don't understand why so many people run 8xAA. The *only noticeable benefit is less FPS and that's not a benefit. So why do so many people run 8xAA? I guess you can just set everything to High/Max and live with the amount of FPS you get but why would you do that when you could be running >60FPS and have a much smoother experience. Also, if we're actually performing a study of FPS vs. GPU/CPU reqs, shouldn't we have a controlled case where by everyone with dissimilar hardware runs all of the exact same settings to get a baseline of performance data? (e.g. 0xAA 8xAF Shadows on MED/HIGH, Textures on MED/HIGH, etc.) Then maybe have a second case with all of the exact same settings with everything on higher settings to help determine if there is some other bottleneck or constraint affecting various cards/systems.
  3. I don't know if you've used Nvidia Inspector before, Biker, but you can set up your own custom profile based on D3 or D3BFG or whatever. You can just pull up either of those and rename it or create a new custom profile and use either of those as a template (I believe). It will also set SLi/Crossfire bits accordingly for those engines and other parameters for compatibility. Its free software.
  4. Unfortunately not. Running a 780gtx :\ and have been running Nvidia since GF3Ti500.
  5. They've said its going to be moddable and with the 13th/14th century assets already completed... this may show promise as a future TDM platform? Sounds really interesting. Not to discount the game of course. Tons of hard work has clearly gone in to it. Can't wait for release.
  6. Crossfire presents other issues in and of itself as I'm sure you're aware. If you run the game in windowed mode it should only use your primary card by itself though that may present separate issues from full-screen mode.
  7. Change this from a "may" to a "will". SSD along with larger monitor/s are 2 of the upgrades that make the largest difference from a user perspective and SSD doesn't carry along with it the burden of more graphic power that the monitor size does. You'll never go back. Also, my personal SSD recommendation would be Samsung or Crucial, respectively. I've used both of these and never had a moments trouble with them.
  8. Ahh, bummer dude. You were hot on that card so that sucks. How is the 970 treating you? I've been looking at those but think I'll wait another gen.
  9. I have large hands and a co-worker here recently got an iphone 6+ and it feels pretty "at home" in my hands however it has no edges at all. The sides are rounded and its slippery as hell. In fact, he himself moved his hand in a sweeping motion out in his driveway the first week he had it (last week) and it went flying and busted the screen.... LOL. I'd like something a bit more tactile etc, but I guess that can be down to the case you have it in. He had one ordered but it wasn't in yet. I think it was the 2nd or 3rd day he had the phone that he broke it. Not funny...but pretty funny.
  10. I played Tenchu on the PS2 years and years ago. I thought it was a great game at the time. Lots of fun/stealth/interesting weapons. Also enjoyed the trailer park mission with the ninja girls in No One Lives Forever 2.
  11. Yeah, "Eliminates screen tearing", doesn't belong in their list. I also wouldn't say, "no risk of crashes or freezes". Reduced is probably a better word there. As far as I know, there is no SLI/Crossfire setup that supports it. If its not a fullscreen app, only 1 video card is being used.
  12. It seems like a handy utility but I have not looked at it or used it so I could not make a call on that. I would think and hope that its not "dodgy". I hope Biker gets it sorted for you. EDIT: after having a look at it I don't see anything at all dodgy with it. Seems like a nice little installer package. "YOU MUST HAVE THE FULL VERSION OF THE ID SOFTWARE GAME ENTITLED DOOM 3 INSTALLED" I don't understand why this text segment is on the disclaimer sign off page because its obviously not needed anymore.
  13. I wouldn't think you would need to do this since you said you already tried running it as an administrator so your logged account should already be in that group or you wouldn't have that option. Without using a shortcut, on Windows 7 you can go Start > All Programs > Accessories folder > right click Command Prompt executable > Run as Administrator Then navigate to the folder where you have placed tdm_update.exe Judging by your log file its, "F:\Games\THE DARK MOD", is that correct? I would also change the name of the dark mod folder to just, "darkmod" with no spaces. I believe this issue was patched out but just in case, rename the folder, "darkmod" with no spaces. So if you're not familar with navigating at the command prompt, just copy this (AFTER renaming the directory to "darkmod") and switching to the F: drive: cd /d f:/games/darkmod Then right click the title bar of your command prompt window and you'll get a menu > Edit > Paste > then hit the Enter key. You can just type this in if you'd rather not paste, just showing you another tool. This will change to the "f:/games/darkmod" directory. Your prompt should now show f:\games\darkmod> You can then type "dir" (no quotes, it means "directory") and it will list the files in the "darkmod" directory. You should see "tdm_update.exe" in the file list. Are we in the right place? Then just type "tdm_update.exe" (no quotes) and it should start the executable. You can also type any command like "cd" or "dir" with a space /? if you want help on any command and what its switches and arguments are. Some examples: cd /? dir /? copy /? Type "exit" and hit Enter when you're done with the command prompt window or just click the X in the corner. I don't see how doing it this way is any different than right clicking the tdm_update.exe file and running it as admin but who knows what ebil lurks in the heart of men.
  14. I like the risk factor and the challenge and yeah it sucks when you have to wait and time the approach, risk getting caught, etc. but that is how life works. If I've got my objectives completed and I haven't met a loot goal I will check other areas first and leave difficult situations till last and weigh the risk vs. the reward. In general it seems that mappers make areas that have to be accessed, accessible in some way. If I study the environment closely I can usually determine that prior and I'm sure a lot of gamers can as well. So whether a door has a handle or not or whether its hiding the last 1% of loot, that's part of the decision tree the player should, in my mind, have to weigh for themself. Its part of a good game like resource managment. Of course that could also be why when someone releases a new FM and I look at the comments in the release thread, when an FM takes someone 1.5-2.5 hours, I'm clocking in 4-5 hours. I realize not everyone has the time to take their time.
  15. For me at least, I find this whole line of questions/suggestions on doors kinda funny. Obviously this is only my view but I personally like it when all doors have handles openable or not. Areas that have a bunch of doors without handles feel like a Hollywood set; fake. When you go up to a door and right click it, if there's no sound, you can't open the door. Check the door. From my perspective at least this is just purely either laziness on the players part, "I don't want to check all the doors"...hey, then don't. Check off your objectives and get to the end already cause you just want to get the experience over with. Or, pull out your spyglass and look at the doors from a long distance and establish that, "you don't have to waste your time going to check them." Wow. So thiefy. I just don't get any of it because as a player, I want to do things myself and not have the mapper doing them for me so I can decrease the amount of time I'm immersed in their world.
  16. Which sucked cause I really wanted to play the second one and I'm sure many others did too.
  17. @AH - That cave look amazing to play in, a shame we can't run large open spaces like that :\

http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/gen2tutor/using_effect_maps.htm Step 2 Now we will turn out attention to rendering the texture and its effect maps for use in our 3D environment. You will notice that like most textures created in Genetica, the preset that we just opened has highlights and shadows baked directly into the texture itself, giving the tiles a three-dimensional appearance. However, these highlights and shadows may not correspond to the position of the actual light source in our final scene. We will therefore activate the Color Only Render button in order to strip away these baked highlights from the texture, allowing our 3D environment to add its own highlights as needed. The following image shows how the texture will look with and without Color Only Render active.
  19. Indeed. Excellent work you've done here.
  20. I thought the code tags constrained the code window vertical size and inserted a vertical scroll... hmm, guess not. I guess you have to use spoiler tags and nested code tags so you get the correct text highlight.
  21. http://en.wikipedia....wiki/UV_mapping Its a way to wrap a flat texture around a complex object. Tels beat me to it.
  22. AH! Yeah, you're right :\ ... or can you remove individual speakers when linked AI die?
  23. Hitman: Absolution -- I actually really enjoyed that game... sooo surely not.
  24. Or you can play a trick on the player. Since they can't physically see anyone above them but are aware there are people up there, you can just leave the hallway properly visportaled so sound comes down the stairs and in to the basement as it should and you could place 1 or 2 speakers playing the occasional footstep sounds with delay and set the audio really low on them. Then you'd only get footsteps and no conversation, the player could hear footsteps above them and when they moved up the stairs they'd be out of range of the speakers so when they saw the people upstairs, actual footsteps would match the AI movement.
  25. Can't you blend the edge of the coal patch in to the floor or would that require having the floor in the room also be a patch? No biggie there, just make a floor patch and put a caulk floor under it to seal, but wouldn't that path to grass blend others have been doing work here as well? I guess you'd also have to export the floor +coal patches as an .ASE but that's still workable. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/15022-dr-ase-exporter-vertical-blending/ http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/11240-grass-edge-revisited-yet-again/ http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/10804-texture-blending-model-panels/
