There was a thread somewhere, something about "the 5 most important things you need to know when starting to map" where, obviously, you could discuss what skills beginners should know. Does anyone know what I mean? I can't find it and since I want to start mapping that would be a great read

I would advice you to get what you are working on, or at least part of it, in a playable state as soon as possible. Don't build lots and lots of architecture while neglecting all the gameplay elements like AI, objectives, visportals,readables etc.

Performance tip:
If you plan to put a lot of lights (even small ones) on the walls, don't build it as a single func_static. The WHOLE thing will be rendered multiple times for every light that hits it. Bad.

Wolfenstein surprisingly has a few similarities to Thief. Most buildings having multiple entrance points, there are places to crawl and climb to sneak around, readables, guard patrols you can sneak around and pick off and secrets to discover everywhere. Very good ambient music and graphics as well. It feels a bit like a FPS MGS at times

It doesn't change the gameplay at all but I still hate these kinds of changes on principle. But the bigger problem is that we also only get the german voice overs and these are nearly always terrible.

Thief has its flaws yes but holy fuck is it fun to play! I'm very impressed so far!

How linear are the story missions? I get the impression that they are very much that and very short to begin with.

I agree. I liked Morrowind and (heavily modded) Oblivion. But after playing a "real" RPG (like The Witcher or the Fallouts etc.) I can't go back to this kind of game. They're boring, bland and repetitive in comparison.
