  1. They're in the clear! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/strafegame/strafe
  2. The TDM universed is partially based on actual, Victorian era history. So, here we have this giant enemy crab scorpion... Hit its weak spot for MAXIMUM DAMAGE.
  3. Finally went back and looked at a playthrough on Youtube, never realized how to make the hammer fall down on the statue! Probably spent around an hour trying to do different wierd things, it wasn't very obvious it was pushable, since nothing else in the map indicated that it was possible. Did not even think of that part of the game mechanics, I thought I was supposed to make the entire scaffolding fall or something... And from reading this thread, I see I've missed several other things in my own playthrough (possible to enter tavern? key on ledge??).
  4. Really liking the look of those candles and I look forward to seeing some of the other items suggested, great work garthzombie! One category of things I think could be useful to expand is, as someone else already mentioned, plants and vegetation. Since I have not yet been able to play around much in DR (due to lack of proper laptop, still saving up for one!), this suggestion has to be evaluated by you guys who actually do. I'm thinking a collection of really low-poly models for use in the distance could be useful for a lot of people making outdoor-themed maps. Sort of like the trees and clinging wall plant types made of single flat planes with translucency to be used as background props behind "proper" vegetation models. Or, very simple larger trees or bushes that are only viewed from a narrow angle from afar. From what I remember I don't think I've seen much of those kinds of props.
  5. Very nice! I've added your suggestions to my list in my thread here Obsttorte. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/16860-2015-audio-music-enhancements-suggestions-list/?p=362979
  6. Clay and ceramics are basically the same IRL, but slate.. that's a type of flat sandwiched rock.
  7. Nice link, thanks! Feels very Lovecraftian.
  8. Been paying for the ESET Smart Security suite (NOD32+firewall+more stuff-combo) for maybe 4-5 years, costs me around €30/year. Lightweight, haven't noticed it at all actually. Haven't had any problems with anything software since I got it. Updates a lot as has been mentioned. The firewall included is great, very easy to allow specific programs through (in my case it was StarCraft2 and some other games mostly). Can't say anything bad about it. Cheap, fast and easy to customize.
  9. Oh, but you've gotten all of this the wrong way. It has nothing to do with the legal stuff, or actual fear that you'll be prosecuted for anything. Many people are just narrow-minded and they don't want to be labelled racists in their community, even if that's exactly what many of them are. The Sweden Democrats (SD) were previously publicly called xenophobic, but the media immediately picked up and spread the term "immigration critical" when SD started using it, so yay, now people have a politically correct way to say they're afraid of Africans, without coming off as racist! Perfect widespread delusion, ready to be further misused and skewed, which it has been. Though, the real political problem is that the government themselves have ignored the immigration issue completely, along with numerous other issues that has indirectly and directly made immigration-related problems worse. The right wing parties has changed many laws to make it cheaper and easier for companies to have (or ditch) employees, or rephrased, made it much harder for employees to actually get decent pay and keep their jobs. The hiring firm business has gone up several hundred percent due to the changes in laws, so now it's not unusual that people have to work for 12 months for a lower "starter" salary before they even get the chance to write a proper contract. I have several friends who has worked for 6 or 12 months on temporary contracts, only to be let off a month before the real talk begins. The company then brings in someone new and repeats the process. In combination with this (as another example), we've lately seen several "free schools" (as in private schools sort of, but they still get public funding based on the number of students, within legal gray zones) being bought up and run to the ground by leeching international capital investment companies/banks. They basically buy a school cheap, change its advertising to something popular (like hair stylist, which you will never be able to actually work as, because really, how many does that for a living? there is no market!) and start to pull money out of it (lower the amount of books being given to students, fire teachers, etc) until it's sucked dry and take the money out in revenues for the company. After the school is bankrupted, the kommun/county is of course responsible for the local students, so the load on the public schools increases to the point where they too need stately funds to survive, sucking even more money, that could have gone to other useful things, out of the system. There's also the problem with house building, especially in bigger cities, but also in smaller ones. There are not enough rental apartments being built, the construction companies rather build apartments you have to buy for a couple of millions instead because it's more convenient. Short-term money, they get their investments back fast, etc. This of course affects everyone who doesn't have a couple of million in the bank, basically the majority of the population. It goes without saying that it's practically impossible for a student moving to a big city to study at a university to pay +€1k / month for 20 square meters, but this is what the housing market has turned in to. People who own an apartment rent it out second hand on the black market for twice the price, and people are buying in because they are desperate to get away from their depressing small towns/parents' homes. There are several other major changes that has brought on the current situation, but increased immigration is only a small part of a bigger picture. EDIT: I realize that most of the things I'm describing are probably happening all around Europe, in some or other form.
  10. I actually have no idea about the practical situation in the UK. I was thinking of back home in Sweden, where the extreme right are in fact white supremacists and nazis.
  11. There are lots of different things going on right now trying to accomplish something like that. We're talking about 10k threads and 15 years of accumulated community knowledge here, so I hope there will be some preserving of the old boards.
  12. So let's just leave the raping and beating and just keep the "racist, homophobic, sexist, extreme right, 1940 style".
  13. Personally I think this is the worst idea ever. The Reason forums has LOADS of info and knowledge, built up through years and years. I'm really sad to see it go away, and I can't understand why they've made this decision. https://www.propellerheads.se/forum/showthread.php?p=1579099#poststop
  14. I've added it to the list in my thread for easier overview. I think I'll change the name of it to something less egocentric.
  15. Was planning on moving forward with some of these things this week, but this cold I have still haven't passed. Really annoying.
  16. You could edit the title of the thread to include SOLVED, to remove any confusion it might otherwise cause.
  17. Very nice, will check that out tomorrow.
  18. To be honest, I overall haven't played many maps due to 1: my lack of a good PC at home, and 2: my lack of a stable internet connection at the studio so I can download TDM and maps smoothly. Though, I was mainly thinking of sound cues as a tool for immersion and story-telling rather than being used in gameplay situations. Like an echoing minor chord once you've reached location X, or a howling wind one-shot going off at the mouth of a cave, or something similar. Sounds can be very useful for setting the mood and also to "reward" players by showing them they've made progress in the map.
  19. Very nice video with lots of different techniques that can be applied to TDM gameplay and level design. I would love to see more use of sound cues and local problem solving/challenges in maps. Also, I don't think "point of no return" map designs are inherently negative to either gameplay or linearity, if used cleverly and in moderation.
  20. I'm not much for celebrating holidays in general, so I've spent a few Christmases and New Yearses either alone or with friends instead of family. Spent this Christmas climbing/ascending a Spanish mountain with my brother. 1400 meters approx. Pretty cool. No Christmas food, presents, tree, music or anything. Stayed at home alone this New Years, no motivation or energy to move out into the sea of drunk people. Another Christmas many years ago I was at a friend's place drinking beer, watching movies and bonging hash.
  21. Is there a wiki article on how you created this standard yet? Would be really cool to see others get into making pieces that can be used in combination with yours.
  22. Being afraid of spiders, insects and snakes is quite common in general, but as many have said before, being phobic is not the same as being afraid. I think it has something to do with the fact that many (bigger types of) spiders and snakes ARE actually dangerous, and that this is something humans instinctively know. It might be lodged somewhere in the older parts of the brain from back when we lived outside in nature. Also, these types of animals and lifeforms are very different from mammals in a variety of ways. The number of legs and the way they move being among the most significant ones. If this phobia is something that is negatively affecting your life in other ways too, making it harder to go through your everyday life, I'd recommend looking into CBT. I'm sure you already know about these things but just wanted to share my thoughts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy
