  1. Thanks everyone!!! Garrett is sleeping in my lap as I type this. He's very adorable and I'm in love for life. I have indeed gotten very little sleep, which sort of make me a bit loopy and emotional ON TOP of everything. I probably won't have much time for the mod for a couple months, with the baby and the new home still needing a lot of moving into and all. But maybe, we'll see. Here's a pic of us napping when he was about 12 hours old:
  2. Wow, I finally have a few minutes to hop on the forums and make this announcement to you guys. Milly gave birth to our first born, a son, on Sunday, June 7, weighing 8lbs 14 oz, and 21.5 inches long. We had a home birth! So our little boy was born right in our own bed in our new home which we only just moved into one week ago! I know it sounds sorta crazy, but we really were careful to research the risks and benefits of hospital birth in the US versus a professional midwife attended home birth, and it turns out that if you are a healthy woman with few or no risk factors, that a home birth is equally safe. (The hospitals here often actually introduce complications, leading to our ridiculously high 30% cesarean rate for instance) Now, his name ... you MUST believe me that this has NOTHING to do with Thief, and I even resisted it a little on that basis, but in the end Milly and I decided on "Garrett Sterling Ramsey". I know some of you are laughing your butts off over that, and I can't help but realize that it DOES look awfully funny for a huge Thief fan to name their kid after a computer a game, but the truth is that we like the name and I even almost decided against it due to the game, but then I just figured "Hey, we really like this name, and who cares what a few Thief fans online think", so we went with it. But we all know I'll still be calling him my sweet cute little thief.
  3. ...and that small detail is going to be improved because we all don't like the steps either!
  4. This actually is somewhat of a plus in my book. I just don't have lots of hours to pour into a game - I'd prefer the 10 hour range with good quality over a 40 hour game of only slightly good quality (or with the really good parts spread between lots of average parts)

    Thief 4

I daresay it is getting harder though, more expertise is required. Long ago one guy could make a whole A-list game alone (like in the 80's), then teams started needing to be gathered, then larger and larger, till now you need 100 professionals 3 years to make a good A-list game. If it was just as you say then one dude could still make a game, just using awesome tools, but that's not apparently the case
  6. I do find it very fascinating, great presentations!
  7. That sounds rather fishy. More likely he didn't have the video connection in or it was loose, as that will give a full red ring, not the 3/4 ring which is the "red ring of death"
  8. I think you'll want to have a very strong brand name power supply so you can rely on it not being cheap crap that will snap crackle and pop, ruining not only itself but potentially frying your motherboard, memory, or even worse. In my experience (learning the hard way) that is almost more important than having a really high W number.
  9. Sorry to hear your woes, doesn't sound like fun. I've always loved my 360, no problems
  10. but I don't know exactly how long the wall is or whatever. So maybe the wall is 12 tall but 328 or whatever long, I don't feel like doing the math to divide that, and have to adjust the wall length to be a multiple of 12, etc.

    Thief 4

I don't know about any large T2X-like campaigns, as you say, but certainly there will be some great awesome missions that get planned, developed, and released, within a year or two of mod release, all well before any Thief 4 release (which is probably 3 years away)

    Thief 4

I just look forward to the death of all publishers, and a whole online marketplace, no more physical copies of games, developers just "publish" directly on their own terms and time table, and I don't have to swap discs!
  13. Ah, that DOES sound very useful, should go into some wiki pages for people to learn this good technique!
  14. Okay, I can see how either of those approached would work (would be nice to have it direct though)
  15. I have a very long wall, and I would like to "fit" one texture on it vertically, but then just have the texture repeat at that scale horizontally. Is there a way to "fit" in only one direction? If not, I would like this feature

    Thief 4

Indeed! This is the only thing that somewhat salvaged TDS, the fact that DXIW served as the unruly guinea pig test subject

    Art Dispute

After 9 nears of marriage (last week), and wanting it to last forever (which it's looking pretty good so far!), I've developed some responses to when she tells me of problems at work or something like that. Sometimes I can just tell that she's only venting a bit, and doesn't want any suggestions or advice, so I don't give any and it's fine. Other times I can tell she really wants me to help her figure out what to do about something, so I say some ideas of what she could do, what she could say to someone, how she could approach the subject and how to say it, etc, and sometimes she right away actually uses my advice! Other time I'm not sure if she just wants to talk about it, or if she really wants advice, so I just ask her flat out "I'm listening, but do you want me to just listen and talk or do you want me to actually try to help with it and give advice?". Plus, no matter what, I'm never bossy, I never say "You HAVE to...this" or "You GOTTA...that", rather I say "you might try...this", or "they might respond better if you said...that". That way we never try to rule over each other, but respect each other's individuality and personal judgment. And even if the girl WANTS to be told exactly what to do, it's probably better to just suggest some alternatives so she has to think and decide still, and then she'll have a better growing experience and gain some confidence after the fact, rather than just doing what she was told which gains no confidence.

  19. In the couple years I've been around here (which is a couple years after the main team got started) I've seen no major fighting/flaming/hating. There have been a couple times when stresses reached a bit high and such, but nothing catastrophic. I think the general maturity of all of us helps a lot (Mortem says we are mostly all 19+, but I would say we are in fact mostly all 30+!), so we can more easily avoid the sort of hyper-impatient crap that 15 year olds might fling around. Add to that the fact that we are all big Thief fans, and Thief is no Halo; Thief is a thinking person's game, a mature player's game, much more-so than the typical multi-player mod scene game like Unreal or Half-Life.
  20. It seems to me that you might want to have less than 400!
  21. I don't think you need a frame, doesn't hurt to have one, and they generally look better, but for function's sake I think it's best to just control the exact corner of rotation on the door by moving that vertex point, so that it properly hinges only on one side just like a real door.
  22. Many laptops will have the S-Video out, and like jdude says most will have a VGA out (which you can set up like any dual monitor, with the second monitor either as a clone of the first or an extended screen. Keep in mind that the S-Video option will be low resolution though, something like 800x600 at best (in my experience at least). If you get a very awesome modern laptop you could shop for one with a super multi-media setup with all sorts of connections, like HDMI out even. But usually people ask advice like you are because you have a few needs and want to spend as little as possible and meet those needs. So if you have a TV with VGA input that will usually work great for you. If you have a TV with S-Video input you may be able to find a laptop with an S-Video out, and just deal with the low res. Also, less expensive laptops almost NEVER have a real video card, extremely rare. They usually have stupid on-board JUNK. So you will have to just spend more, or shop around a LOT, or shop online on eBay or buy.com or something. Look for either ATI or NVidia video card, avoid Intel onboard junk or any other name. But all this is if you want to play games. If you really don't care about games at all, on board video will be fine for work.

    Doom 3 DOF

I think the dof effect really draws your eye to the centerpiece, and yeah with the bloom working well it just "glorifies" the whole scene.
