Does anybody else have this problem? In the (European) evenings the forum is unbearable slow. The server is delivering about 8Kbyte/s, sometimes less and usually stops midwhere during loading the page. Sometimes you can't even get the index page, sometimes you can log in, but then only get half of the overview etc. In the mornings everything is snappy.

I've upgraded IPB to the latest stable version, and since this was a major upgrade (from 2.3.6) I also had to re-do the forum style. Most of the new stuff is in place, but I bet that the logo will be changed. One of the many new features in version 3 is rating of posts and also a "report spammer" ability which will make it easier to single out spam bots and ban then at sight. Hopefully this will stop some of the spam threads we've seen recently. Make sure to empty your browser cache if you're experiencing any problems. And please report any errors etc in this thread. But this article argues about why we shouldn't use uniform, 2-d pixel arrays in artificial eyes, and goes pretty deep into explaining why a fractal search is the most efficient, and in particular a fractal with D = 1.5, then gets into what things we find aesthetically pleasing, and it's actually things with fractal dimension that match the eye's natural fractal search dimension. Quite interesting overall.

I just spent over twenty minutes trying to make my laptop's sound system behave correctly. Some time ago, some random guy decided it would be a good idea to have the toggle between headphones and internal speakers in modern machines controlled via software instead of hardware. As you would guess, this leads to yet more problems. When I connect a pair of headphones, the internal speakers would keep playing. This is obviously undesirable if I'm in a public place. I tried every single audio control but whatever I turned down, it would turn down the headphones too. I'm not an engineer, but I know how these jacks used to work. There was a tiny switch inside the jack that would physically disable the internal speakers on a device when headphones were connected. It used to be plain and simple. After all, why would you want to listen to tiny internal speakers if you've got nice headphones connected? I got it working, but in closing I would like to say this. Do not make things more complex than they need to be. It frequently only causes more problems. This last line applies to the guys who think all sound mixing and routing should be taken care of in software.

Going through my old stuff I find my old black lacquer modesty screen brush prefab. I'll commit this for general use. I'm putting it under prefabs/furniture/misc rather than decorative as it just about squeaks in as furniture since it has some practical use rather than mere decoration like a vase. But where to put the textures? There is different flower art on almost every panel - no, three only, I have some more somewhere not processed. Also plain black lacquer panel so they can have any size border. Also a knots puzzle art. I think I have more of those not processed. Also a shiny smear specular for them all. Meant to simulate black lacquer - perhaps somone can improve on that. So, make a new texture folder? misc? art? decorative? They don't fit any of the current folders.

[update] Spoke to Marcus @AMD UK on the phone and as it turns out a number of complaints have been made against "Spyre". My AMD forum account has been unbarred and my Ip address unblocked!!! Bought a new gfx card for xmas, been having issues with mainly the driver So I though a good place to look for support and polity vent etc - or so I thought My second post got flamed by some smart arse fanboy and then promptly locked, to which I reported the posted asking why it had been locked.. and then my account on there got deleted and my Ip blocked (untill the isp dhcp refreshed etc) so I cant login even with a different account name. I have emailed AMD directly about this as I did nothing wrong according the t&c's and I got no warning Pm or email from the forum mods. Now I've been over at the nVidia forums a long while back when I had the 8800GTX when I was equally frustrated when posting about the driver issue with thief etc, but at no point did a thread get locked or worse my account deleted. I don't have loyalty to AMD or nVidia but depending on the answer I get from AMD next week this card maybe going back and AMD will be added to the list of manufactures I will never buy anything from again. We discussed somewhere about taking a painting from a frame as loot or special quest object. I'm just looking at this again. I've just committed a rolled up canvas inventory icon as a start. Not sure if it's good enough. Feel free to replace it. It's tga for now, will convert to dds if OK. The taking of a painting I think can be done with a simple func_static flat panel, probably a patch I'm not sure yet. Set up with any of the model painting textures and placed over an empty frame on the wall. The flat panel canvas is never seen on its own in game but always either attached to a frame or in the inventory so its rigidity is unimportant @Springheel: I think you mentioned you could produce a model empty frame fairly easily. (or frames I guess if it needs two or three sizes.) Are you OK to do this? An alternative is a simple patch placed over any painting I guess which makes this actually do-able right now.

Hi Guys! I'm having an "argument" with my girlfriend as to the quality of her art (with whom things are going much better, thanks in no small part to the great advice I got here not too long back). I created a poll on my "blog" that makes it incredibly easy (one click, no name no nothing) so if anyone is so inclined, check it out and give a quick thumbs up/down. This is hardly an extensive piece of work, just a cute little sketch she did for a webcomic she wants to make that she thought was terrible and I thought was adorable (the little drawing she did for me on the back made it all the more so, but I didn't post it yet). It took far too much wrangling than it should have to keep her from trashing it. Yes, you might point out the relative dumbness of this type of poll, but she's got low self-esteem (which I'm trying to fix), and if I can get a ton (a relative term) of people to vote on this, it might help. Visiting her DA (yeah, I know - link right at top of blog post) wouldn't hurt, even if you don't look through it. Very little there since she hides/destroys most of her stuff. Mod is looking great. Cant wait until summer so I can get back to mapping (not been my best semester...).

when i do a search, it give me some results, I click on a result and exspect to get taken to the post it specifies - but no..... I get taken to the first post of the bloody thread it is in..ggrrr

why are they so slow this evening..??
