  1. Yeah I'm definetly gonna upgrade. When working on darkmod, I reckon 75% of my time is spent waiting for my computer to do stuff!! This is an unnaceptable and insane waste of my time, so here comes the upgrade. I'm just putting it out there to see if anyone has any comments. I think these days it's all a much of a muchness. Anything mainstream is gonna be good. All I did was copy the specs from a pre-built game system from a reputable local PC store, and then remove the parts I didn't need, and downgraded the CPU from a 3gig duo to a 2gig duo. Prices are $AU HDD: Western Digital 400G SATA 7200 rpm HDD (16MB Cache) $115.00 RAM: DDR2 2Gig(2x1G) PC6400 800Mhz Dual Channel Geil $85.00 CPU: Intel ATX E4500 CORE 2 DUO /2.2GHz/2MB CACHE/800 FSB/LGA775 $148.00 CASE: Antec Sonata Designer Tower Case $175.00 VGA: Jetway GeForce 8800GT 512MB DDR3 PCIEx16 HDCP 2xDVI-I HDTV $265.00 LCD: Acer X223WB 22 Widescreen LCD Monitor Black DVI (HDCP) 5ms 2500:1 $315.00 MB: Gigabyte EP35-DS3P S775 P35 FSB1333 DDR2 PCIEx16 SATA2 RAID GbLAN 1394 $179.00 Total $1282.00

  2. My windows 2000 drive was only 6 gigs & some audio software I would like to run (protools m-powered, adobe audition 2, max/msp) requires windows xp. I only had 400 mb left on that drive so I bought norton ghost 10 (with ghost 2003), an 80 gig hd, and windows xp pro upgrade ($99 academic price). So I spent the entire day yesterday trying to move my win2000 install to the new drive After reading Dom's posts about using ghost 2003 instead of vers. 10, I tried it but it wouldn't work because the virtual drives were not defragmented I read defragmenting wasn't necessary on newer systems. Besides, I'd rather use applications on an operating system than maintaining the damn OS (what I like about macs are they need very little maintenance). Then the formatting on the new drive wasn't done correctly (dynamic drive? I don't think so) so my cloned win2000 drive wouldn't boot. Eventually the format was done correctly so I recloned the drive after a few tries. But once a drive letter is assigned in windows then that drive letter/path sticks so I had to muck around with regedit to change the drive letters while I was booted into the old installation. Finally win2000 booted on the new drive after a full day's work Now to upgrade to winxp but that had to wait until the next day. Today I started upgrading to winxp. Should be easier than yesterday. Hell no! Apparently the install cd didn't like any of my cd drives, even my external usb2 dvd-rw! XP wasn't copying the install files very well so I had to restart the install. I ended up using my usb2 drive but it was rough. Finally XP is installed but I had to update my nvidia drivers & my linksys NIC. XP wouldn't install the drivers because the NIC had the same name as a service or some crap. So I had to boot into troubleshooting mode & muck around with regedit again. XP finally installed the damn network driver so now I can activate windows That's what windows users live for any more . . . So now the protools demo & audition 2 are installed & working well (the dark mod is running too), so now I'm happy _______________ Macs are so much easier to upgrade. Just use carbon copy cloner to move the system drive then choose that new disk to boot into. Easy. I did that a few times with the G3 b/w macs we have in the house & each time I had very little problems. Too bad my g3 isn't powerful enough or I wouldn't have bothered with the xp install.
  3. Awesome. The forums support transparency in avatars. :)

  4. I was doing animating for DarkMod and my computer was chugging - it's at the point where I have to play the animation back at a slower speed just to see the subtleties, because the frame rate keeps dropping too many frames. And so I got to thinking about upgrading again. And the "upgrade" thread shows up in the DarkMod forums the very same day. Must be an omen. How many of you are playing Thief on an LCD? The stores around me don't seem to stock CRTs anymore!! WTF? I need a new monitor cause this one is dying. I guess if I upgrade I would get this; http://www.computeralliance.com.au/systems...;qrySystemID=35 $2349 AU but I cut it down to $2083 by subtracting the stuff I already have - HDD, DVD, Card Reader, Mouse, keyboard. (Still getting the included speaker system, I think I should replace these huge things here) The LCD in that bundle is $400. I would like to get a comparible CRT but seems like I don't have a choice. All I want to know is, when I turn the lights out, what will it look like??
  5. The forums have been upgraded, please see this thread: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/9845-forums-upgraded-to-ipb-3-0-3
  6. I miss the brown borders dividing up the sub forums. This great big block of grey looks ugly.

  8. Welcome to the Dark Mod forums! I enjoyed browsing your gallery. =-)

  9. I have an experimental build here, which is using the latest Win32 GTK headers and libraries: http://208.49.149.118/TheDarkMod/DarkRadia...t-0.9.7pre5.exe Can a few people give this build a shot and report back... - whether it loads/starts at all? - whether you can minimise/maximise the windows properly? - experience any strange hangs after loading a map (like it was previously reported)? Any tests are appreciated. If this is successful, I'm going to switch the SVN trunk to the most recent GTK+ 2.12.9 version (edit: argh, got the version number wrong the first time)
  10. Hello!

I saw on TDM forums that you are a very talented level designer. Could you lend your talents for The Sly Project? (http://tsp.comlu.com)

We have no level designers yet and the project was announced almost a year ago. Please join us! I'm looking forward to your answer friend.

    Best wishes: Oszkár Winkler

  11. Hello!

You mentioned on TDM forums that you are a skilled modeler. Could you lend your talents for The Sly Project? (http://tsp.comlu.com) There are only a few models we need.

If you are interested, please e-mail me: woszkar@gmail.com

    Thank you! :)

  12. [update] Spoke to Marcus @AMD UK on the phone and as it turns out a number of complaints have been made against "Spyre". My AMD forum account has been unbarred and my Ip address unblocked!!! Bought a new gfx card for xmas, been having issues with mainly the driver So I though a good place to look for support and polity vent etc - or so I thought My second post got flamed by some smart arse fanboy and then promptly locked, to which I reported the posted asking why it had been locked.. and then my account on there got deleted and my Ip blocked (untill the isp dhcp refreshed etc) so I cant login even with a different account name. I have emailed AMD directly about this as I did nothing wrong according the t&c's and I got no warning Pm or email from the forum mods. Now I've been over at the nVidia forums a long while back when I had the 8800GTX when I was equally frustrated when posting about the driver issue with thief etc, but at no point did a thread get locked or worse my account deleted. I don't have loyalty to AMD or nVidia but depending on the answer I get from AMD next week this card maybe going back and AMD will be added to the list of manufactures I will never buy anything from again. So whats the moral of this story, well take your pick.. [update] found cached copies of 1 of my posts Cached AMD frum link Cached AMD forum link2
  13. when i do a search, it give me some results, I click on a result and exspect to get taken to the post it specifies - but no..... I get taken to the first post of the bloody thread it is in..ggrrr
  14. I will upgrade the DarkMod forums this Friday to the newest IPB version. This will hopefully help us stop the spammers from signing up so we can get rid of the manual authentication process. The forums will be unavailable for some time, and the skin might not look normal after the upgrade. Just a heads up. Cheers, ~m2
  15. Hey guys. The forums have been successfully upgraded, although it took longer than I thought due to some extensive mysql queries that had to be run. This version of IPB is the newest, and it includes changes, new features and more. Please have a look around! IMPORTANT: Since a lot of the client-script files have been updated it is mandatory to empty your cached files from this forum. You can either empty your browser cache if you want to (check the settings), or you can do a hard refresh (this is usually done by holding the Ctrl-button while you hit 'Refresh'). Yes, the skin is currently toe default IPB skin, but this will be changed ASAP. It takes some time to update the changes in the original darkmod-skin, so please be patient. If you spot anything out of order (e.g. bugs) or you have suggestions or general feedback, please use this thread. Because of a new CAPTCHA (Completely Automatic Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart) system introduced in this version, I have now disabled the manual validation process of new members. Cheers, ~m2
  16. why are they so slow this evening..??
  17. Just returned from a 7 day holiday, opened up this forum, had at least 4 pages of "new content". Made it past page 2 (to about June 03), and then had to take care of a few things here. When I came back, the forum had logged me out (timeout?), and when you log out, it forgets all "new content". So you log in, and it says "there is nothing new for you". Great, now I never know what I missed between May 30th and June 03.... grrrrrrrrr With email, you would still have all unread messages *sigh* Is there a way to change this behaviour? It has annoyed me in the past, but not as much as this time.. Edit: It's even worse, there is "no new content", but when I go f.i. into the "off topic" sub-forum, it still shows me threads as unread that I definitely already did read an hour ago. So I can't even just look at all the "unread" threads. Oh boy...
  18. Well, I've finally done it! I'm upgrading to the newest version of SONAR so that my virtual studio wil be much better equipped for more work. So, hopefully you guys will be hearing some more work from me soon! Anyone else use SONAR instead of the other biggies out there (Cubase, Logic, DP, etc.) ?
  19. Announcement: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?showtopic=8900 Please post any comments, bug notices, etc in this thread. If you have any issues with the new forums, please try to refresh/remove your Internet browser cache. Thanks ~m2
  20. After some fund raising we were able to get a IPB perpetual license which makes us able to upgrade from an unsecure 1.3.x board to a fully updated 2.0.4 board. Feel free to poke around and look at the new features etc. The skin is reset to the default IPB one, because the old one won't work on this version. We'll get working on it ASAP. Happy posting!
  21. My brother being a nice chap, just bought me a copy of lightwave 8. A thousand ponds isn’t a laughing matter but he is a nice chap as I said. Any way I have spent the afternoon and evening trying to get a simple block into doom3 and have it textured properly. I struggled mightily to get it to work but the uv mapping would not allow me to change the points I wanted. The wall behind my desk has several new dents in it and I have lost yet more hair I can ill afford to loose. Anyway the nice chap saw what I was doing and said "oh didn’t I tell you, you need to download the 8.2 patch to get uv mapping to work properly?" Now he just spent a thousand pounds on me that I didn’t ask for but his throat seemed to have a magnetic pull for my hands. I resisted and instead created yet another dent in the wall and downloaded the update and it works! I can now get the maps into doom3 and I’m learning how to uv map slowly. I think 3dmax is much better at uv mapping but allot worse at everything else It would be really nice if lightwave had a cubic map under uv map types but it doesn’t. I’ve asked over at doom3world but Ill ask here too, can anyone point me to some tutorials on uv mapping in doom3?
  22. Alright, the forum has successfully been upgraded to IPB version 2.2.2. If you have any comments, bug reports, suggestion or general feedback, post it here. Cheers, ~m2
