  1. So... What was up with the forums all day yesterday..?
  2. Since a lot of you guys around here have your personal threads with collections of questions, I'm not gonna sit around but do the same myself. I want to make lightning flashes through windows. The windows aren't transparent so I have made them into func_statics. Then I've made a construction with the shadow texture to make the "light map". So the flashing lights in the room is affected by the metal and prongs of the window texture. The problem is that I now will render the outside areas, as the engine needs a portal outside to even render the flashes in the room. As I understand the thunder/lightning behaviour is tucked away in some kind of fx-file where all the preferences are. Is it possible to change the lightning flashes and make, let's say a spot light, inside the room, pointing away from the window, and creates flashes in the room? That way I can use whatever lightning map I want. Another problem I would like to solve is: When the flashes appear, the inside of the windows is totally unaffected. I would like to make them change to a brightly lit version, in sync with the flashes. Perhaps making a very thin sliver that covers the whole window, and make it into some kind of mover that moves with the flashes and goes out a small bit, just so that it covers the dark window.

  7. I'm curious if any fellow KDE users have been making use of Basket Note Pads to aid in their mission building. I'm finding it to be extremely useful for organizing notes, ideas, outlines and to-do lists. Just about anything can be posted to it including graphics and sounds (I think). It's a desktop clipboard on steroids and can hold multiple 'baskets', each with their own sub-baskets to organize whatever you want. Here's a sample:

  9. [update] Spoke to Marcus @AMD UK on the phone and as it turns out a number of complaints have been made against "Spyre". My AMD forum account has been unbarred and my Ip address unblocked!!! Bought a new gfx card for xmas, been having issues with mainly the driver So I though a good place to look for support and polity vent etc - or so I thought My second post got flamed by some smart arse fanboy and then promptly locked, to which I reported the posted asking why it had been locked.. and then my account on there got deleted and my Ip blocked (untill the isp dhcp refreshed etc) so I cant login even with a different account name. I have emailed AMD directly about this as I did nothing wrong according the t&c's and I got no warning Pm or email from the forum mods. Now I've been over at the nVidia forums a long while back when I had the 8800GTX when I was equally frustrated when posting about the driver issue with thief etc, but at no point did a thread get locked or worse my account deleted. I don't have loyalty to AMD or nVidia but depending on the answer I get from AMD next week this card maybe going back and AMD will be added to the list of manufactures I will never buy anything from again.   10. I was told to apply here to help with the mod. I don't have any work examples on me (I'm at school), but I can add anything you guys would like later. I started mapping with DromEd, and have experience in UEd 1.1 (UT), 1.5 (Deus Ex), and 2.x (UT 200x). Recently I have been mapping for the Cube2 engine (with experience in the origional), and would like to learn DarkRadiant. I have additional experience in C++, ASM shaders, GLSL, and OpenGl. Pretty much anything you guys need, I can contribute to. Any requests to see specific work?

  12. So I decided to do like Sotha did and post miscellaneous progress/questions/problems and such to a single thread to avoid cluttering up the forum, so here goes. My first question here is about the absence_noticeability property. I'm trying to get it to work on a painting that tears out and leaves the empty frame there, but no matter what I do I can't get the AI to notice it (even when well-lit and sitting a few feet directly in front of him). Is this because the object is replaced with the blank picture frame instead of just being absent altogether, and if so, can I work around that? Edit: After several tries, again with a well-lit item (not a painting this time) placed mere feet in front of an AI, I can't get him to notice the absence. What am I missing?

  15. Less like learning, more like trial and error. Trying to copy various techniques, this one sounds like Danny Elfman, something out of Edward Scissorhands for instance. http://208.49.149.118/TheDarkMod/hehe.mp3 Bear in mind it's recorded in realtime through a sampler, no post-processing. I love the fact I can hit play and get sounds like this on my system, it's like there's an almost-real orchestra there - about as good as you can get on a desktop, really.

While messing around with lightwave I came across this problem several times - the mesh doesn't have a uniform colour in smooth shading, as it should have - sometimes you can see lines, where the colour changes. I think mostly, when you connected two parts of a model. http://www.thedarkmod.de/misc/differentcolour.jpg (I know that the wireframe is a bit messy in that area, but I don't think that's the reason) I guess this has something to do with normals, but I couldn't find a proper way to fix it. Has anyone of the lightwavers around here an idea, how to fix that? (this is nothing darkmod related, so I posted it in the off-topic) edit: June 7th - forget it. I just figured it out myself
  17. Just returned from a 7 day holiday, opened up this forum, had at least 4 pages of "new content". Made it past page 2 (to about June 03), and then had to take care of a few things here. When I came back, the forum had logged me out (timeout?), and when you log out, it forgets all "new content". So you log in, and it says "there is nothing new for you". Great, now I never know what I missed between May 30th and June 03.... grrrrrrrrr With email, you would still have all unread messages *sigh* Is there a way to change this behaviour? It has annoyed me in the past, but not as much as this time.. Edit: It's even worse, there is "no new content", but when I go f.i. into the "off topic" sub-forum, it still shows me threads as unread that I definitely already did read an hour ago. So I can't even just look at all the "unread" threads. Oh boy...

  19. First of all I want to apologize if these questions are already described in depth in the wiki (A-Z guide, etc.), but I couldn't find them, not in depth at least. 1. I've got some problems connecting rooms. When I connect rooms the textures of the two rooms overlap each other. If they don't, then there is a gap, which causes leaks obviously. Could someone explain how to do this properly? I did what was described in the A-Z guide but it doesn't have the desired effect. I don't want a corridor, like described in the guide, but a room directly connected to another room (a door is between them). 2. What is the best and most simiple way to create stairs leading to a floor above? Is it the same as texturing around a door (clone wall, ceiling in this case, and then do the curtain method), or completely different? 3. Is it possible to have two textures on one wall, ceiling, etc., if so how? For example if you have two floors a texture for the ceiling on the first floor and one for the bottom on the second floor. Another example is that you have one wall but that you have different textures for inside and outside. That you have wall covering on the inside but just bricks on the outside and that on the same wall. 4. I don't really understand how the electronic lighting is done. I understand that it doesn't emits light by itself and that I have to place a light (rmb, place light) somewhere close to it, if I understand correctly. What is a normal place to put it and what should the brightness be. I do not really have a good feeling for this. These are things that really obstruct me to continue building my mission. I might encounter more problems on the way, but these are the ones I have at the moment.

The dark mod has come along way. with dark radiant released and many Thief FM makers out there along with the hype about this mod in the thief community maybe You guys should add in some new parts of the forums. For editor Discusion, and just general mapping. along with coding and stuff. so there is help here for the mappers that are at work learning and using the D3 editor. just a thought it would be a good move to create a really good base of DM editors for the release. it would help us solve the problems we are having and get better as we talk about it and learn the editor. also maybe a FM concepts forum to. to talk about ideas for good maps and for ppl to req mappers and coders for DM projects... i think its the right move. it would also bring a lot of new people interested in the mod's comunity on a daily bases. maybe we can steel some of the fm makers from the first two thiefs haha. hopefully. theres alot of amazing FM's out there for the first 2.
  22. I've just completed the upgrade from IPB 2.2.x to 2.3.6, the newest official release of IPB. This was done to stay ahead on the IPB version 3 that is currently in the beta stages. Hey guys, I went to Barnes and Noble to find some reference photos and came across a REALLY good book called "The Medieval Fortress" that in detail shows TONS of architectural styles and variations in real life castles and fortresses. It even shows real floor plans and the purposes of all the rooms. An excellent book if you want to make convincing castles and realistic layouts for Dark Mod. Check it out if you have the chance, you won't be sorry.
