Problems with Surround Sound (Asus Xonar DG)

Xonar DG may not be compatible with EAX 4.0

Doom 3 ROE uses EAX 4.0 protocols and is not "compatible" with your soundcard. EAX 3.0/4.0 are still under exclusive license by Creative and cannot be emulated. With that said, some games that use EAX 3.0 will automatically bump down to EAX 2.0 when a Xonar trys to emulate. I believe CoD 2 is an example. An important thing to keep in mind is, it is emulation and thus is not perfect. If EAX compatibility is a feature you're that concerned about, I suggest returning your Xonar and investing in a genuine Creative solution.

Sorry.

Enabling EAX shouldn't be a requirement to get surround sound working. It's always been my understanding that the phrase surround sound is in reference to a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup. Are we all on the same page here or are some of us mistaking EAX (environmental sound effects like echo, reverb, and occlusion) with surround sound?

I've got a Xonar card myself and although I don't currently have the required number of speakers to test surround sound I'm nearly sure it would work. I say this because there was a time where I was using a 5.1 setup with a different non-Creative card and all I needed to do to get surround sound working was ensure the speaker configuration in Windows was setup properly and you assign the proper value to the CVar s_numberofspeakers within Doom 3.

As for EAX if the game supports EAX 2.0 and below, which Doom 3 does not (it uses EAX 4.0 as quoted above), the Xonar can emulate the effects in software. This isn't something you're going to get to use very often. I think the most modern game where I was able to use it was Halo PC and i disabled it because I thought the effects made the game sound like crap.

No - I ah... Sorry that's gone way over my head. :-X

When I google it it seems like Creative specific software...

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.
