Wood, Rope Arrows, and Breaking the Illusion

In an outside scene, if you have:

1 - A building face with wood near the top, reachable by a rope arrow ...

2 - A rope arrow ...

3 - An illusion-breaking sightline if the player gets up there.

What's the best way to handle it?

A - cover the wood with a non-arrow-sticking surface (i.e. tdm_nodraw_ceramic) ...

B - let the player sink his arrow, climb up, and see all kinds of things he shouldn't be seeing ...

C - let the player sink his arrow, but block his climb in some manner ...

D - don't use wood high up, to avoid the problem in the first place.

Vine arrows can create the same problem with vine-friendly surfaces, but they don't have the reach of rope arrows.

Thanks.

get the skybox fix implemented for 1.08 so we can have awesome skyboxes. :D

Other-wise, just try to build stuff so it blocks the players view of the void is best imo. I'd prefer to just have no clip in maps so I can't climb up onto a roof even if I can get an arrow up there.

a- if it's wood, I shoot and lose an arrow I'm annoyed. How am I supposed to know that's not wood?

b- It's quite possible to not be able to climb up on something due to difficulty, so that doesn't break the illusion.

c-it's hard to not use wood up high, though you can always use metal trims.

But I'd clip in line with the roof, not have a clip ceiling. It's weird to hit your head on something when you think you can still move upwards, it's not weird to just not be able to mantle up onto something.

I've tried to use no wood thingies in high places. In addition, I've placed player clip to prevent the player from climbing too high. It would be fair to set the player clip in such a manner that the player still could retrieve the arrow, but not climb too high.

B) and D) would be my picks. And as another option...

E) No-rope maps. TDM has a great mantling system, and you can usually get by fine without rope arrows.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm going with Melan's (E). There was one spot that required a rope arrow, but by moving a piece of furniture, mantling solves the problem.

+5 points to Baddcog for slipping in the skybox comment.

And/or put a patch on the surface of the roof and add the 'slick' texture.. - the only downside to that is the player may fall to thier death!

I have a snowy roof at a steep angle, and it amounts to the same thing. But they only fall back to where they jumped from.

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.
