Inability to drag a brush into existence

Recommended Posts

I see this now and then. It's been happening for a couple months now. But after a half-dozen instances in the past hour, I thought I'd post something.

I'm working with brushes, creating and dragging and moving ...

... and all of a sudden I left-click and drag to create a new brush, and nothing happens.

It's not a case of drawing in a hidden layer, or drawing with a texture that's filtered out.

The brush . simply . isn't . there.

The only recourse I have is to restart DR, after which brush creation is back to normal.

Anyone else seeing this behavior?

Not me and I've been mapping very actively recently. Newest version from DR webpages, on windows. Just monsterclipped a lot of stuff and that workflow is constant drag-into-existence business. No problems.

Are you sure you didn't have clipper on or something?

For some reason this rings a bell, but I cant be certain. I get other strange crap though, like being stuck in rotate mode on the camera view. But the way i get around this is to alt-tab out of DR and back in again, can you try that and see if that fixes it instead of closing and restarting..?

I've had that happen too a few times. Thankfully KDE also has Alt-Tab for swapping open windows, making it an easy fix.

Can any one tell me how to get at the warnings after dmap or any ideas as to what may be preventing the map from running.

I`m crashing when I try to run the map I`m working on, Doom3.exe stopped blah blah and in the info page it`s TheDarkmod.exe but I know it`s the map I`m on as other missions work.

I get a pointfile line but it seems to go in through a window and through a solid wall.

@troop: are you sure the structures the pointfile trace goes through are worldspawn? Models and func_statics will not seal against the void.

Also: check if some nearby objects origin is in the void. Sometimes when you rotate func_statics, their origin gets outside the object. if it is in the void, you get a leak even when your geometry is impeccable.

I got the same issue under linux, in a permanent way. Cannot drag any brush into existance. Under linux it has to do with outdated libraries and the only recourse is updating the entire OS. I have no idea why this happens, tho.

Hey @nbohr1morehow come the zombies in The Dark Mod don't have a "resurrection" mechanic to it, similar to how Thief has it?
They're quite a weak creature as of right now, it's merely a walking corpse that slashes you, making attacking them to kill them an actual strategy.
Would be better if they had some cool mechanism to it that truly makes them a danger, such as the resurrection idea itself.

Query: when was the last time a zombie in a video game was unnerving or scary to you? I'm chipping away at my anniversary submission and I've been trying to gather opinions on the subject. I'm perfectly capable of lighting them well, changing their sfx, and creating effective ambience, but I'm worried that zombies at their core are just too overdone to be an effective payoff to the tension I'm creating.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.
