Would've thought I always double-clicked to load them, but that's not how it works at the moment, and I agree it'd be an improvement. I've opened an entry on the bugtracker for this.

It actually does work like that in 2.07, just tried that.

Correction: double clicking works only if you're not in the map. If you just started TDM, installed a new mission, etc., and you're trying to load a save, the double click will work. If you're in the menu during play, the double click doesn't work for some reason.

I always double clicked to load a mission. Actually, it always was a bit confusing for me that I need to double click the save game. Didn't expect I have to, so, it always seemed a bit unintuitive to me.

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
