New Character Models

After wrestling with errors all weekend, I've finally managed to get the beggar animated and in game.

As you can see, there are still a few things to tweak (the rope belt needs to have the weighting adjusted and some textures have to be fixed), but he plays his animations properly and generally looks pretty good. :)

(I know he has a pretty healthy stance for a beggar, but those are the only animations we have)

I think he looks great, but one thing I notice is that his feet aren't the same color as his hands. If he wasn't wearing shoes I think his feet would have the same wear and tear that his hands have. I love it, it looks like he's been out in the cold freezing to death!

I know, the feet are one of the texture tweaks that need to be done. Right now it's just using the default pagan flesh texture.

Well, driver issues and switching webhosts knocked me off track for a few days, but I've still been working on getting the nobleman ready to be rigged. I managed to take the old hands Oddity had modeled and reduce the polys to almost the same as the current mitten hands. Take a look at the image below--I know I was impressed with how much better they look, even though they're only about 25 more polys each (and they have a 150 poly shadowmesh). That's the power of a good normalmap for you.

Now rigging them could be another issue, but one thing at a time....

Wow! There's just no comparison. *jawdrop*

The texture resolution also looks a lot higher.

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

Wow, they look great Spring! smile.gif How many polys were the original oDDity hands?

The originals were over 600 polys each, but I don't think much detail has been lost. I definitely want to replace the current mitten hands with these on our existing models eventually. Frankly, I'm not sure why we didn't do something like this right from the start.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

Trying to be productive on my down-time before Capcom releases Akuma and my son is constantly on my PC playing Street Fighter...

Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.
