Now now. It's hardly confirmed. Let's not jump to conclusions. :)

 

Even if true, it's likely to be set in modern times, as Springheel pointed out to me earlier. There was an interview from a while back alluding to that: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3134177

People want another Thief, too. We'll make that series more modern, though...the medieval thing's run its course.

 

Not that I have anything against modern times. It's just... why call it Thief?

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

They'll call it Thief because everyone who loves Thief will pay attention and possibly buy the game. We shall see what direction they take Thief in.

 

I bet they'll have more info coming summer as was stated in numerous conversations I had in the official forums. Anyway by the concept art what I had said earlier was true. This time they are loaded with talent like in Deus Ex 1 :D.

true, it's not a confirmation, but there are only 3 eidos franchises that start with T that I can think of. They certainly aren't doing Tomb Raider, b/c that franchise is still alive and well, and I highly doubt they were refering to Time Splitters. So, I would say it's a safe bet we'll be seeing the likes of thief 4 in the next few years. only time will tell how good it will be. I have high hopes, but low expectations. PROVE MY EXPECTATIONS WRONG, EIDOS! PLEASE!

Your optimism is soul-crushing. :rolleyes:

 

Even with a team full of talent with a proven track record and a kickass vision (assuming for the sake of argument that they have a kickass vision), there are still so many things that could go wrong between now and 2012 or whenever. I'm going to be quietly pessimistic so that there's no chance of having my expectations dashed.

Yeah, that interview was from 4 years ago...and that guy was fired.

 

But the attitude that the "medieval thing has run its course" is pretty much what any developer is going to think. What are they going to do, another Garrett story? Not a chance. They wrapped that up in TDS--there's nothing else they could do with the story that would be of any interest to anyone but a rabid fan. And there aren't enough rabid fans to justify producing a game just for them.

 

Without Garrett, why would they bother keeping the same setting? More Hammerite vs Pagan stories? They've been done to death.

 

No, I'm almost certain a new "Thief" title (there's no way it will be called "Thief 4") will be modern--essentially Hitman 4 but with theft missions instead. They'll look for ways to try and tie in things from the original series to try and appeal to fans (they might keep some kind of steam-punk aesthetic, or work some of the original factions into a backstory of some kind), but I predict it will have very little in common with the original games.

Huh? AC is old medieval, more old than Thief's setting I think. Do you mean a new Thief will have ultra modern setting like the near future of AC memory corporation stuff, combined with old medieval scenes/missions?

Ah, I haven't played those (except for the demo of the last one, which I felt was the most linear thing I'd ever played since NES rail shooters)

      Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

      i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
      tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.
