Unexplained Crash to desktop

Recommended Posts

After a session editing St.Lucia I closed DR without problem but next time it just kept crashing on launch. I've now restored by accepting defaults but kept copies of my configs and also the log. Just wondering what I can retrieve from my configs. Guess I'll try restoring one file at a time.

Here are the last few lines of the log...

=> Module ReferenceCache initialised.
Initialising module: SoundManager
SoundManager::initialiseModule called

I can only guess what's wrong - in case you're stuck all I can offer is to have a look at your files (send me the .xml files in your "Documents and Settings" folder plus the exact map (including .darkradiant file) plus the exact version of DarkRadiant you're using.

  • 4 weeks later...

I've been using DR (finally) without incident the past few days, but suddenly today when I try to load it I get a Runtime error. Each time it is during the Initialising module: SoundManager phase.

Have you tried deleting the .darkradiant file? It has caused problems in the past.

Where would I find this?

edit: Oh, the map files? Ok, tried deleting them, but same problem. I get the error below every time:

When I try to start with the renaming user.xml option, I get a "DarkRadiant.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error.

edit: More troubling, even when I uninstall and then reinstall DR, I get the same problem. Yet yesterday it worked fine. :(

since you say you are "finally" using DR, maybe you don't know about the other folder it installs which you might want to delete for a fresh install? For XP it's "Document and Settings\Owner\Application Data\DarkRadiant".

Just delete that folder after you uninstall DR, then when you install DR again it will make the folder again (and you'll just have to reset your favourite options, colors, etc)

Fuck this just started for me now, for no reason whatsoever, all I did was an SVN update for Darkmod and now I get that crash it's the wrap_oal.dll that's causing problems it seems.

I reinstalled OpenAL but that didn't help and it crashes everytime when loading the sound manager

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

File it on the bugtracker and I'll look into it, but it sounds like some soundshader stuff might cause DarkRadiant to barf all over.

edit: doesn't crash on my end. Can somebody zip up the .sndshd files on his system and attach the zip file to the bug report?

I've SVN'd earlier today and my DR runs fine right now.

I'm SVN'ing right now, will see if it breaks anything...

OUCH, now it crashes! luckily I saved the SVN update, here is what changed for me:

Updated: C:\Games\doom3\darkmod\sound\tdm_sfx_impact.sndshd
Updated: C:\Games\doom3\darkmod\def\tdm_healing.def
Updated: C:\Games\doom3\darkmod\def\tdm_moveable_kitchen.def
Added: C:\Games\doom3\darkmod\materials\tdm_moveable_kitchen_utensils.def
Completed: At revision: 6951

So it's got to be one of those four files!

LOL found the problem the soundshader is missing the closing bracket on the last shader statement

I added the "}" and DR opened fine.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

      Query: when was the last time a zombie in a video game was unnerving or scary to you? I'm chipping away at my anniversary submission and I've been trying to gather opinions on the subject. I'm perfectly capable of lighting them well, changing their sfx, and creating effective ambience, but I'm worried that zombies at their core are just too overdone to be an effective payoff to the tension I'm creating.

      Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

      I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

      briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
      What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
      I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.
