  1. Make sure that any of your outer faces don't have "nodraw" applied. I made that mistake before because I didn't realise that it doesn't seal against the void, while "caulk" does.
  2. Instead of having to bash open doors that don't respond to lockpicks, I'd prefer that mission authors use them sparingly and only when the flow of a mission requires it. If there were bashable doors then there would have to be unbashable door args too. Sounds more trouble than it's worth to me.
  3. Thank you. It's sorted. It didn't occur to me that it would be a shortcut problem because it hasn't cropped up anywhere else. The shortcut was actually shift+left-alt.
  4. I remember this happening before, but for some reason it is a lot worse now. Constantly, while working in Dark Radiant, my language setting for the keyboard will randomly switch to one which I have installed from the language bar in Windows. I have to then switch it back to English because none of the keyboard shortcuts will work. When I disable the language bar it still happens, but then it means the change is stuck until I restart Dark Radiant. I've got Chinese, Russian, Polish and English. Chinese is the worst because it brings up a bar to type the Pinyin into. Any ideas how I can fix this?
  5. Hey, just a little message to say that I'm taking a break from TDM. I still haven't got myself a new PC and I don't have much money. I was making a map for the Christmas contest, but found it too tough fighting with the laptop I'm using. Some of the missions play well, but on the whole it's unsatisfying on this hardware. I will be back soon. (I miss Dark Radiant) Here's a little bit of friendly criticism of a lot of screenshots I see: Yellow, yellow, yellow. I know it's the fire and the brick/wood, etc - and also early drafts - but there's no harm playing with some other subtle ambient colours for mood. I think this is why the red and blue wallpaper textures are really striking in a good way right now. There's plenty of space elsewhere to play with mood and colour.
  6. I didn't think the trailer was anything special. It wasn't scary either (apart from the bit that makes you jump). The audio feedback from the character just makes me feel disengaged. The actual game might be good though. I know better than to trust a trailer, and I love Penumbra.

    Movies of All Time

I typed up a large list of films and added descriptions talking about them. These films weren't so obvious, but they were all awesome. Just as I was ready to click to post, the browser crashed. I lost everything and now I'm pissed. I'll rewrite when I have time.
  8. I'm all for conversing with AIs. The adventure game style that has made it's way into some of the T2 FMs has really rocked my world. Vegabond by Random Taffer is a prime example. It works so well by downplaying immediate stealth. The minimalist approach along with variety makes it so much fun for me, and makes the stealth sections so much more precious. It's also a brilliant example of a non-Garrett mission, having you start out destitute and in search of somewhere safe to eat and sleep, but necessity takes you deeper into a terrible situation. I see the mod (and also Thief fan missions) as a brilliant way of expressing stories of entwined lives through architecture, and playing as an outsider, violating personal space to uncover the mystery behind them. Talking to people in-game seems like a step backwards, but it really draws a sharp line between where you're welcome and where you're not. It's a bit like moving from shadow to shadow, but it's more related to how the people in the world tick.
  9. Okay, this is very off-topic, I'm sorry, but - I ran into the second T2 FM I ever played (but had forgotten about) recently, and I was like "Oh hell, it's this one. It's crazy". I'm nowhere near finished playing it, but it's really fun. Turns out it's by Fidcal. Really fantastic. Check out The Night Watch.
  10. Haha, I check every toilet too. As for crystals in water - I seem to remember that the crystals were originally meant to be found before you could attach them to the end of arrows in order to make them into moss, water, fire arrows, etc. Therefore it's plausible that they were initially intended to grow in their native environments like pesky elemental limescale.
  11. I will be dousing them with extreme prejudice - just for the FPS boost, of course.
  12. Wouldn't that affect the visportal in any way?
  13. Not surprised at any of you. Only just found my calling and hopefully by next year I'll be studying molecular biology. As for my mission - it's probably going to be delayed until I get off this bloody laptop. I'm finding it too hard to work with unfortunately. For the moment I might have a go at making some prefabs for others (if they turn out any good).

    Steampunk

Personally, I can't stand what's now referred to as steampunk. The way in which the Looking Glass games came across to me - instead of tame - was very original and aesthetically anachronistic more than anything. I've never read The Difference Engine, or any other fiction that's considered to be steampunk, so I guess I'm not one to judge the genre, but what I see most of linked to the word is just fashion with no substance. Really negative opinion there. I don't mean to mess your thread up, and I won't bite anyone's head off for liking something that I don't.
  15. You might need to extract the prefabs.pk4 because Dark Radiant can't read it. You'll find a few skies in there.
  16. That blue line looks like an entity is bound or targeting something else. Click on them both and check out what spawnargs they have. I haven't found out how to delete that blue line after you delete a target or bind, but it will vanish after reloading your map I think.
  17. Thanks greebo, I think I've got it working now. It's going to take a while to get used to, but models certainly seem less painful to me than textures (I spent 6 solid hours today just getting a simple custom texture to work).
  18. Small question about models here: If I export a mesh as .obj and then open it in Blender to edit it further, is there anything special I have to do before I export it as .ase? I can't get any .ase files that were originally from Dark Radiant to appear. Files that I created from scratch in Blender seem to appear just fine.
  19. I guess you could pick up objects and use them to shield your view as you escape, and eventually find a mirror. Still sounds a bit silly though. To throw another random idea out - creatures that only have a shadow mesh and are otherwise invisible. That would scare the hell out of me.
  20. I figured it's kind of like your graphics card trying to render infrared too. Unless you're a reptile that REALLY likes videogames it would be fairly useless.
  21. If you don't mind me jumping in on this thread and asking a question too, is there any way to get a nice rope fence? - the kind that you would see beside canals, docks, etc. Would it be best to just model it as something static?
  22. Would that work better using skyboxes?
