  1. On today's episode of "Trucks Vs Bridges"... I love how most of them don't even slow down. "I might not fit through here, but just in case, I'm going through at full speed!"
  2. The FCC trying to screw over the public is nothing new. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2008/05/update-nbc-and-microsoft What's really amazing is that some people still genuinely believe that the government works for the people. At this point I have only one request; the FCC should formally change their name to the Federal Cable Company.
  3. When I envision a ghoul in TDM, I think of the apparitions in Thief. They were the creatures that creeped me out the most when I was a kid. Yeah, the zombies sounded scary, but the apps were worse. Also, they had ranged attacks (and pretty good aim too). I think a monster inspired by those would be a better direction to go than another zombie.
  4. It happened to me on Debian Linux 64-bit, in 1080p. But I just tested again in several FMs, and it won't happen now. Weird.
  5. Is anyone else noticing that (after an FM intro plays), you must press a button at the end to get out of a black screen and progress to the objectives/difficulty screen?
  6. Found a funny TDM bug that's also in 2.05. Equip a weapon, hold down attack, press escape to bring up the menu while continuing to hold attack, and then escape again to leave the menu while still holding attack. Now, walk around and you have become separated from the weapon! You can walk all around it and in front of it. Sadly, you can't hit yourself. When you let go of attack, the weapon fires from where you are, not where it is.

Yep, I saw that happen with the sword (it getting stuck in the "prepared to strike" position). Try it with the bow or blackjack, and you should see it floating there as you freely walk around, until you let go of the fire button.

  7. I have managed to produce a save game that won't load if anybody wants it. The load process just gets stuck forever. This is the 64-bit Linux version, FM is The Accountant part II.
  8. Yep, that got it going. (saving) Thanks.
  9. For me, attempting to save on any mission causes the mission to bomb out to a full-screen console (TDM itself is still running but progress is lost). The above happens on the 64-bit Linux version. I tried to see if it would happen in the 32-bit version, but the 32-bit version (linux as well) fails to load any missions! Here is a dump of a session where I tried to save in the 64-bit version. And here's a dump of the 32-bit version crashing when I try and load a mission. The above is in a clean TDM 2.06 installation, no upgrade.
  10. The installation is from an update from 2.05. And the problem manifested in Windows too, so it is indeed damaged game files. Something must have gone wrong during the update process... The update was kicked off in Linux and appeared to complete successfully without error. Here's the md5sums of the TDM directory. I guess I'll try a fresh install next. EDIT: Fresh install got it going.
  11. Editing darkmod.cfg made no difference. I wonder if my game files are damaged... Another oddity is that attempting to run the updater again with the --keep-mirrors option freezes when comparing definitions. Shall I hash them and post the output here in a spoiler? Will go test the installation in a Windows environment right now.
  12. Alright guys, I've skimmed the thread and I haven't seen this so... On 64-bit Debian, when I try to launch the game, either 32 or 64-bit version, I get a black screen when the main menu should show. At the top of the screen, it just says "Invalid GUI:guis/mainmenu.gui. Prior to this, TDM 2.05 ran fine. I wonder if I am just missing some libs. I don't see anything about it in the console output, which follows. If I had to guess I would say it is because I didn't uninstall the current mission before the update?
  13. Could a developer hook me up with the beta test forum please? Thanks!
  14. The new shadows look very nice, awesome work guys!
  15. Built a Ryzen system. Got segfaults, so exchanged CPU. Segfaults are solved, except for in cases of crap software that segfaults on any machine. But before, I also experienced very rare crashes followed by hardware errors during next boot. Naturally I thought that the new CPU would solve this too. I found out this morning that I was wrong.

Only ASLR I know of is Address Space Layout Randomization. It is a feature of the OS to randomize the way memory is allocated, in an effort to make attacks more difficult to execute. Far as I know, it has nothing to do with BIOS.

  16. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/11/09/us_government_texas_shooting_iphone_backdoor/ Here we go again! If only authorities could get into that phone, they would discover the secret schematics to build a time machine, at which point they could then go back in time and prevent the attack from happening in the first place. Or more likely, it's just people capitalizing on a tragedy to push an agenda, when the fact that the device is encrypted played no role whatsoever in the events that took place. Hobbling encryption would not have stopped this attack, nor will it stop the next one. This guy was allowed to buy guns in spite of violent behavior. They let this guy slip through the cracks, as they so regularly do.
  17. The cop is the first one to get nasty.
  18. I awakened at 7 AM this morning by some jack-off running a jack-hammer right outside the window. I live right next to a McDonalds. This is not the first time; I've called the police because they were running a F***ing power washer at 3 AM before. I thought there were laws about making excessive noise at inappropriate hours, but as we all know, laws rarely apply to businesses.

We had the noise of fireworks at 2am on 6th november till 2:30am. Airbomb repeaters and rockets that go phuzzz BANG are not quiet.

    4. kano

      kano

Yeah, people do that here too. But they're smart enough to only light off one or two fireworks per night, making tracking them down pretty much impossible.

  19. I'll do it. I'm actually not a new member, but a former one with a new identity. (wasn't banned, just wanted a new name) Anyway, I run Debian Linux Buster with a Ryzen 7 1700 and a GTX750Ti. Memory is 16GB. Hopefully no one will discover my secret identity!
  20. Nothing will make you appreciate ten-year-old-equipment that still works more than seeing a unit that is less than two months old fail completely. BTW, many modern external hard drives are essentially designed to take the data hostage.

    1. kano

      kano

First, the USB-to-SATA bridge is integrated in the drive. That means if the bridge fails, you can't put the drive in a different case or hook it directly to a computer. Second, they encrypt the data on the drive, even if you don't specify a password. This is so that you can then decide to set a password later and not need to write everything again, or at least that's what marketing wants you to believe.

    2. kano

      kano

The reality is that the encryption locks you out of the data if the bridge chip fails, even if you're handy with a soldering gun. No, knowing the password won't help you, because the actual key is inside the bridge chip! And the encryption isn't even secure. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/10/20/western_digital_bad_hard_drive_encryption/

TLDR: F*** this C***. Only buying spec-compliant SATA drives from now on.

Avoid pre-installed portable HDDs as much as possible. Best option is to buy a standard drive and an external enclosure. Bit more tedious but you avoid problems like this.

  21. Wonderful piece of music, I can't believe it is from an 8-bit NES.
  22. This game looks hard as hell. lol Great music though.
  23. Government is allowed to switch this feature off, but as consumers, we're not. Nothing suspitious about that, no sir-eee. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/10/21/purism_cleanses_laptops_of_intel_management_engine/

If it receives a hard enough backlash (which it sounds it is for Intel) it's likely to assume it wont be in newer CPUs down the road. Also seems a bit dirty of Purism to use it for their own marketing endeavor at the same time.

nFor now we just need to find the ports it uses and what IPs its talks back to and block them.

  24. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-yahoo-nsa-exclusive/exclusive-yahoo-secretly-scanned-customer-emails-for-u-s-intelligence-sources-idUSKCN1241YT As long as nations like the US are doing things like this behind the scenes, they have no reason whatsoever to punish Microsoft for forcing intrusive software on the public, and every reason to just look the other way.
  25. You almost feel sorry for Microsoft. Windows Phone bit the dust, and Intel canceled the ultra-low power Atom CPUs that were used in budget X86 tablets and phones. At one point Intel were showing off a phone with an Atom CPU that ran Android and Linux x86 applications simultaneously, pretty cool. But they scrapped that, too. It would have inevitably been used to build an x86 phone that runs Windows... Microsoft really needed the low-cost Intel Atom chips to put up a fight against the bargain basement Android tablets that go for under $100.
