  1. What do you guys think? If we started a contest next week, would we have some entries finished before Halloween? Do we have any interested mappers?
  2. Community Unusual Contest Winners! 1) Lich Queen's Demise: Sotha (88.68%) 2) Not an Ordinary Guest: Fieldmedic (82.00%) 3) The Builder's Blocks: Jesps (65.83%) For consideration (since the poll was messed up, Sir Taff's dropped out of the contest): Vengeance for a Thief part 2: Sir Taffsalot (74.38%) Calculations: Hypothetical: The Gatehouse: Bikerdude and Goldchocobo (85.90%)
  3. We are, at present having the TDM summer vertical contest, which in my opinion is a most excellent thing as it: Generates new maps for the community.Encourages newcomers to try out mapping as it shows almost anyone can learn Dark RadiantIt really is a PR candy for TDM as it shows that the community is active, healthy and growing. The contests show that TDM means business. There are relatively few models in the game. A few chairs, a few tables. From a mapper point of view the options are dwindling, since everyone is using the same limited amount of furniture. There are quite low amount of prefabs as well. So here is my suggestion (well not mine, I suppose Fidcal talked first about engineering contest): When we have a contest next time, why won't we have a smaller contest beside it. A mapping contest like this and the previous one. Plus a small contest, like a prefab contest. The prefab contest topics could be: Create cool working mechanical devices (Like PranQster's drawbridge, steam belching machines, locomotives...)Create original furniture (while modeling is the way these should be done, DR could allow the creation of pompous golden throne seats, dining sets, etc)Create the most beautiful skybox.Create an elaborate lockbox/safe/chest/bankvault.Create musical instruments.Create the most elegant drawer desk/bookshelf with a secret compartment. Prefab contest's benefits would be: Those who have only little time to spare could still participate in a contest.A prefab project might be a manageable introduction to DR and TDM editing in general, introducing a easy inducement to try mapping. The best prefabs would be incorporated to the prefab bundle that comes with TDM, increasing our assets. This would result also in a nice two way action: map contest creates new maps for the community to play and the prefab contest creates new building blocks for the mappers to utilize. So.. Load your guns and prepare to shoot the idea down in flames.
  4. It's weird that I'm starting this topic, given I do not make maps. But I'm thinking here, I know you mappers need a lot of time to finish a mission, months at least, but I propose making a contest that lasts one week. "Impossible" I hear you say, but it isn't! what is impossible is to make a polished mission in a week, but you can do the polishing after the contest. I say this because I've participated in a couple of game jams, game development competitions that lasts one week, and if you can make a game in a week you can definitely make a map in the same time. Just focus on gameplay and functionality. I think it's a great exercise and it's a much more fun and interesting experience. Just compare with this latest contest, I didn't even know it was still running and it only has 3 entries. Boring! no matter how great the missions are. It's also a less daunting task, as counter intuitive as it may sound, because if you have months to conclude a mission you konw you'll be competing against potential master pieces. Anyway, just an idea share yours.
  5. So who here that signed up for the Halloween contest is still going to do it? i'm going to attempt a 2 week speed build myself.

Ah, it is nice to see you getting back to mapping, Fieldmedic! Looking forward to see your work. They always do something differently.

Hehe, "different" is a good word to describe me ;)

  8. Personally I think this is the worst idea ever. The Reason forums has LOADS of info and knowledge, built up through years and years. I'm really sad to see it go away, and I can't understand why they've made this decision. https://www.propellerheads.se/forum/showthread.php?p=1579099#poststop
  9. Alright, to begin early on the contest process and have "even better" pre-planning, I am starting a wild thread to throw out ideas into to be collected for voting. I think it will be easier if any concepts are bolded at the top of the post in this format: Contest Concept: Campaign Secret Santa Size Restriction: Yes Time Restriction: No Time restriction meaning "Can prior work be revised for inclusion?" You would need to provide additional details for your concept in your post. For example: My example concept is to have a contest where each mapper is gives another mapper a mission concept to complete. The assigned mission must be one of the 4 available missions in a Campaign concept. Once all the participants have their mission, making sure to properly divided as evenly as possible, then the contest begins. The benefit of this approach is that no matter who's missions are the best, players can take the individual missions and string them together into their own preferred version of the overall campaign. Of course, the highest voted ones will be packaged together as the official contest version. Edit: For the record both Fidcal and Demagogue have presented similar concepts so I won't claim to be the original author of this idea... I just like it. ~~~~~~~ Just to keep it easier to track, only post your concept at the top of the first post about it. Then it will be easier to collect all the ideas and there should be less problems with missed contest ideas that were never voted on.
  10. Shall we begin yet another conversation about what kind of contest folks would like to enter? By the time any decision has been settled upon, the newbie contest should be just about concluded. Are folks interested in taking-up a new challenge either this spring or summer? Please post bold text at the top of your reply such as: Contest Concept: Manor Heist Description: A plain old fashioned Manor Heist mission competition. Entrants are encouraged to express creativity via AI patrols and behaviors. (Or let this thread collect dust until you are ready to discuss this topic again )

I've been considering reinstalling TDS for a wile now... I've still got my original CDs. Have these guys fixed the bug where you get stuck floating? Last time I played TDS, that happened and I was unable to get out of it, so I ragequit.

    3. chakkman

      chakkman

You can surpass that bug by drawing your bow, performing a shot, and draw your blackjack when the bow is tensioned, to abort the bow shot. I'm hoping it's fixed in the Gold patch too though. Alongside the thing where you move sideways, when peeking left or right.

    4. nbohr1more

      nbohr1more

      @Biker Hmm.

      Build TDM mission in DR.

      Export as portions as ASE

Edit in Blender and export in TDS compatible format

      Import into T3ED

      Edit

      Release TDS mission...

      (or just stick with TDM)

  11. Per popular demand and fllood's great work collecting these ideas, I am opening a poll to see which is the preferred contest. There were no respondents previously about whether anyone was ready to join a contest but at least we can settle on the theme now and perhaps another poll for the desired time-table. Here is a link to fllood's post that has further links to descriptions of each theme: http://forums.thedar...post__p__300358
  12. Anyone played any of the 48 hour contest entries over at TTLG? Are they any good? I'm waiting until my new FM is out the door before I start playing them.

Will probably check them all out eventually. Just out of curiosity. Will start with those two first.

These days I only play T2 missions by well know authors, but even then I will skip some.

This looks cool, somehow oldschool in a nice way.

I hope the gameplay is unique to justify him reinventing the wheel instead of, e.g., just forking off of us. The art design looks good.

  14. The Great 2011 "Seasons" contest will commence shortly! This contest is intended for any type of FM having a clear seasonal element such as weather etc. sun, snow, rain, fog. The best use of the theme "Seasons" is how the missions will be judged. Because summer is not distinctive visually it is recommended (but not essential) that entries for summer be daylight FMs There is no size limit. Contest length: 3 months As the time-limit implies, we are expecting that missions will be built within the 3 month period as a matter of honor. Those interested in entering the contest please post below in this thread. Please state whether you're a maybe or a certain entrant and when you are free to start. The start date (and thereby the final day for entering) will be 1st March BUT If we get sufficient entries well before then we shall start early. I will be posting an article at Moddb for a general invite to the modding community if a sufficient number of entrants agree to participate. (This thread is not for discussion of how the contest should be run or whether it should be different.)
  15. Here's another fun contest for you mappers! We've pieced together some rules but are flexible to feedback over the next week or two. During that time please confirm if you are entering. We can keep putting the start date back until we have at least 3 or 4 ready to start building. THE RULES: The contest ends at Midday UK TIME 19th August 2010. There is a bit of flexibility. Anyone who has good reason to extend that a little should post on this thread before then. BUILD TIME: Must be two months or less. The contest by necessity must be on the honour system but is flexible. So you must judge roughly that you took two months build. STYLE: This is a 'vertical' contest which means we are looking to exploit and enjoy height - mantling, roping, jumping, stairs, elevators, ladders, dropping, etc. TYPES: It can be anything that fits the above style: underground mine shafts, internal tower, external tower, or any combination. See later for examples. VOLUME LIMIT: You must build within these set limits... 1280 x 1280 x unlimited vertical Plus unlimited inaccessible exterior space for facades, skybox, blue rooms etc. "1280 x 1280" just defines an area 1638400 square units so you could build within a rectangle. It must be vertical that so you cannot have slices of 1280 x 1280 that slope up at 10 degrees! "inaccessible" means both by the player or any AI. Projectiles allowed (you can throw a rock or shoot an arrow into or fall to your death or force an AI to fall in the inaccessible area. Death is the only excuse. You cannot use this area to drop to a ledge below or climb a ladder as that is gameplay.) Moving structure allowed, (flag waving in the breeze.) Effectively "inaccessible" means totally contained within clip. This external area is not compulsory. It can enhance your FM but it can also be a major headache. You can have an internal-only FM of 1280 x 1280 without the problems or advantages of an exterior. Or a combination which might be mostly interior but goes 'outside' briefly on the 14th floor! But just remember, if you or any AI go outside say onto a ladder or balcony it MUST be within the 1280 x 1280 so your tower must be less than that obviously if you have any exterior. An interior-only FM might have windows with sky texture to give a sense of outside much like was done in Chalice. "blue rooms" means any inaccessible room separate from the main build to store player tools, ammo, new stuff that might get teleported in, etc. etc. Examples (but not limited to these suggestions): A series of vertical and horizontal mine shafts going down contained within 1280 x 1280 plan view plus a blue room for holding inventory ammo, extra stuff to be teleported in whatever. A tower 1024 x 1024 plan view with interiors plus 128 accessible on all sides for eg, balconies, catwalks (the building could lean or extend one way 128 and on the floor above a balcony extend 256 the other way and still be within the 1024 total) plus any size inaccessible skybox around it (falling to your death is allowed in this space!) plus blue room. A hollow giant tree trunk 512 x 512 with branches going out to fill the 1280 x 1280 accessible area plus any size skybox and facades (forest if you wish) plus blue room. VOTING: is limited to three categories so will be on gameplay, visuals, and best use of verticality with points 3, 2, 1 multiplying each vote in those categories. Each FM must be submitted in the 'official' FM format - in a .pk4 file, ready to play. Help is on offer for those that need it. You are free to use the startpack or not as you wish. All objectives, weapons, etc. are already working so you only need to eg, adjust loot values. Or you can use the prefabs that include ammo shop whatever. You can use any prefab. Please confirm if you intend to enter and when you will be free to start. Anyone not confirming can still submit an entry before the yet-to-be-set close date but if I don't see at least 3 definites then it just won't happen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When you release your FM you should: Start a new thread at the Dark Mod forums headed FM name by Yourname (2010/M/D) Summer FM Vertical Contest Entry Open a poll. Give it the exact same questions and choices as for the Christmas contest EXCEPT the first question should read: Gameplay: Good vertical use. Enjoyment. Fun duration. Smooth flow, ect. Versus Bugs. Frustration, Boredom, framelag. In addition you should open a thread at ttlg but the above header should be preceded with Dark Mod: If you don't have an account then ask me or anyone who does to open a thread for you. This should NOT have a poll but a link to the poll at the Dark Mod forums.
