  1. Does anybody else have this problem? In the (European) evenings the forum is unbearable slow. The server is delivering about 8Kbyte/s, sometimes less and usually stops midwhere during loading the page. Sometimes you can't even get the index page, sometimes you can log in, but then only get half of the overview etc. In the mornings everything is snappy.

      I never got into BSD, though I've installed it once or twice. This is another reason to check it out.

      The BSD's arn't for everyone, but within their goals, simple code and mailing lists lies a lot of goodness and simplicity. I love the underdogs. Anyhoo work will be Linux friendly too. Portability is a cornerstone for good code.

      (We can leave the thread for journalism corruption, but just on this...) Then the issue in academia is money flowing to the more corruptable fields like science & engineering with the big corporate grants & revolving door with staff. The humanities might not get that, but OTOH they are getting pressured to "justify their existence" financially. I could probably agree it's rife in almost any human field though, as long as there are incentives there will be corruption.

      Or then we have the "uncorruptable" critical academics, but then they're basing their work on Derrida or Marx and are so detached from reality they throw their credibility out the window. It's good to be critically detached, not so good to be derailed from reality. My position in law sometimes is something like a critical realism, but it's practically an orphan position. (You want to protect victims *and* think science works??? Wha...?)

      Who is uncorruptable anyways? I cannot convince even myself that I would be uncorruptable in every situation. And I perceive myself to be situated in the more-reliable-than-50%-of-the-general-population side in the gaussian distribution curve of corruption. Problematic, yes?

  2. Hopefully the screenshot (very bottom of the post) will be clear enough, I had to pass it through Gimp. It's not limited to the mission pictured here, I've seen it happen on Training Mission and The Outpost. So presumably global problem. It just so happens that Thief's Den is probably the fastest loading mission by far. SOME GUI items appear black (here, on Thief's Den, the "Objectives" button in the briefing as well as the loading bar). In game... Shaders are completely weird in places. I've also seen corruption happen on some textures (namely on The Outpost, I can provide screenshots if needed). Water is... well, black. Torch smoke is just a black rectangle too (see the ground in the attached pic: THAT). The screen is also extremely dark as a whole, I have to push brightness/gamma to no end to be able to see something. It's not due to compositing or OpenGL in use, happens both in KDE and XFCE4 with compositing disabled (Arch Linux x64). It's not due to bad drivers (nvidia binary, BTW), anything runs fine, really (and Doom 3 looks as normal as ever). Oh. And it's not due to the update 1.07 -> 1.08, I reinstalled from scratch just to rule it out. Furthermore: F12 crashes the game so I have to resort to external applications for screenshots (minor, except when you want to show a graphical problem. Just my luck. >_>). Fiddling with the graphical settings crashes the game every now and then. (on the bright side of things, yay, a French translation that deserves the name; yay, 1.08; yay, no sound problems).   4. For the last 1-2 weeks the forums have been really slow and unresponsive for me, when I type a post half the time it just sits there etc.. is anyone else having the same issues..?
  5. Hello gentlemen i have problems building the DarkRadiant editor. I started a map when i was using ubuntu, now I use Arch and i want to finish the map and help to make the Darkmod even larger. I wrote this topic to talk about the problems I'm having with some missions: Return to the City, Rightful Property, Sneak and Destroy, Heart of Lone Salvation, St Albans Cathedral. I can read/see the mission objectives, choose the dificulty and load the mission. However, sometimes the game crashes while loading (shows the "program has to shut down" message from Windows). Other times, I can play the missions for a few minutes, but if I save the game, it crashes the same way. I'm running Windows XP SP3, 2.60 GHz Dual Core, 2 GB memory, and an ASUS EAH4350 SILENT/DI/512MD2(LP) graphics card.

Or can somebody package all of the necessary 64bit lib*.la files into a gzip so I can drop them into my /usr/lib64 directory? Probably not going to need this... Turns out that the libstdc++.so was 0 bytes and was linked to an older version. I fixed that. It's associated .la file was indeed in place, so compilation continued. However, libgtkmm-2.4.la was missing next, so I linked one to libgtkmm-2.4.so and compilation continues...
  9. I read the FAQ but no luck. Some time ago i installed the Darkmod for my Doom 3 installation. I was careful with everything, it run ok. Some time passed and i tried to play the mod again. I chose the mod from the mod list inside Doom 3 menu. Could this be the reason it got messed up? I had forgotten that according to the read me file you have to use the tdm launcher . bat file. When i got to the mod from inside Doom 3, the settings could not be changed, the game does not restart when i choose the option to restart, the two missions (alberic, training mission) that i had installed were gone. 'Alberic' and 'training mission' showed up in the Doom 3 mod list, but when i chose either of them from within the game, a plain Doom 3 new game starts. When i read the readme file again and tried to start from the tdmlauncher.bat file, it does nothing. The tdm updater says everything is up to date. What exactly is going on? Thanks.

  14. I don't know whether this truly qualifies as a bug, maybe it's more of a gotcha, a difference of assumptions between pugixpath and the VC++ Debug STL implementation. When compiling gamex86 as a debug build, downloading the mission list will cause a "invalid null pointer" exception. The problem is triggered by the following line in MissionManager.cpp in the CMissionManager::LoadModListFromXml method. // Localisation packs pugi::xpath_node_set l10PackNodes = node.select_nodes("localisationPack"); This produces an empty xml node set from the query which it attempts to return via xpath_node_set::operator=() This routine sets m_begin and m_end to NULL before falling through and calling into xpath_node_set::append() with an empty set. m_begin = m_end = m_eos = 0; m_type = ns.m_type; if (ns.size() == 1) { m_storage = *ns.m_begin; m_begin = &m_storage; m_end = m_eos = &m_storage + 1; } else { append(ns.begin(), ns.end()); } This is arguably a bit dubious since if you look at the xpath_node_set constructor, m_begin and m_end are not NULL there but point within the m_storage single static node. The problem with them being NULL is that the Debug version of std::copy() in the VC library asserts that it's destination is not NULL even when the source iterators imply an empty collection. Changing xpath_node_set::operator=() to the following avoids the issue: m_begin = m_end = &m_storage; m_eos = &m_storage + 1; m_type = ns.m_type; if (ns.size() == 1) { m_storage = *ns.m_begin; m_end = &m_storage + 1; } else { append(ns.begin(), ns.end()); } As far as I can tell, the documentation on std::copy is silent on whether NULL is a valid destination iterator when the source range is empty. Given that pugixpath is an included package, maybe passing this issue upstream is a better course.

  16. Hi guys, the recent version of darkradiant (1.7) is unable to display the grid numbers in the ortho view due to use of the deprecated "gdk::gl::font::use_pango_font" function. When switching between editor layouts, crashes can occur. I rewrote the broken code with the use of the ftgl-library, freetype and fontconfig. If you are interested in the code, pm me. Unfortunately I don't have permission to upload diff-files. The only problem with my "solution" is that fontconfig is only available on *nix systems. I use it to get the path to the appropriate font files. A similar mechanism for Windows is missing since I'm not familiar with the internals of the windows font support.
