I never got into BSD, though I've installed it once or twice. This is another reason to check it out.

The BSD's arn't for everyone, but within their goals, simple code and mailing lists lies a lot of goodness and simplicity. I love the underdogs. Anyhoo work will be Linux friendly too. Portability is a cornerstone for good code.

  1. I'm putting this in this forum because it's not a technical problem it's a gameplay problem. 'Return to where you started' or 'Escape back to the street' is OK because if anyone goes back there earlier then nothing happens but it makes sense. No, the problem is when you have to say, find a new exit. You find it early but it doesn't go anywhere. Makes no sense. So the mapper has to block it invisibly which is immersion breaking and confusing if the player doesn't realize it's the exit to be used in the future. One solution is you need a key or its equivalent which you can't get until you've completed a sequence of objectives. But might be difficult to set up and you may hear cries of "Key Hunt!". Another method is the player progresses linearly through different areas, each one being an objective, so you can't reach the exit until you have gone through them all. A problem there is other objectives like loot. 25 short in the last section? And anyway, that only applies to linear FMs that already work that way. An idea comes to me as I write this. Change the objective to something more indirect, from say "When all else is done, exit by the West Gate" to read "When all else is done, 'do something' so you can then exit by the West Gate." That 'do something' is tricky though depending on the situation. "Wait on the corner until the gate opens" or "Check if the ladder has been lowered. If so, use it to escape." Can anyone think of examples of the above or any better solutions? Perhaps solutions you've seen in Thief.

(We can leave the thread for journalism corruption, but just on this...) Then the issue in academia is money flowing to the more corruptable fields like science & engineering with the big corporate grants & revolving door with staff. The humanities might not get that, but OTOH they are getting pressured to "justify their existence" financially. I could probably agree it's rife in almost any human field though, as long as there are incentives there will be corruption.

Or then we have the "uncorruptable" critical academics, but then they're basing their work on Derrida or Marx and are so detached from reality they throw their credibility out the window. It's good to be critically detached, not so good to be derailed from reality. My position in law sometimes is something like a critical realism, but it's practically an orphan position. (You want to protect victims *and* think science works??? Wha...?)

Who is uncorruptable anyways? I cannot convince even myself that I would be uncorruptable in every situation. And I perceive myself to be situated in the more-reliable-than-50%-of-the-general-population side in the gaussian distribution curve of corruption. Problematic, yes?

  2. For the last 1-2 weeks the forums have been really slow and unresponsive for me, when I type a post half the time it just sits there etc.. is anyone else having the same issues..?
  3. Does anybody else have this problem? In the (European) evenings the forum is unbearable slow. The server is delivering about 8Kbyte/s, sometimes less and usually stops midwhere during loading the page. Sometimes you can't even get the index page, sometimes you can log in, but then only get half of the overview etc. In the mornings everything is snappy.
  4. I'm trying to drop an object in a location to satisfy an Objective. Following the directions "An Objective to place an object in a Certain Location" on the Objectives wiki page, I used the Objectives editor to tie an object to an info_tdm_objective_location brush. The objective shows up on my Objectives page. The object and the brush are properly named and present in the Objectives editor. But when I drop the object in the location, I get no success message. Anyone else try this? I've played all fan missions but one, and I don't recall this type of objective being used in any of them. Thanks
  5. I've upgraded IPB to the latest stable version, and since this was a major upgrade (from 2.3.6) I also had to re-do the forum style. Most of the new stuff is in place, but I bet that the logo will be changed. One of the many new features in version 3 is rating of posts and also a "report spammer" ability which will make it easier to single out spam bots and ban then at sight. Hopefully this will stop some of the spam threads we've seen recently. Make sure to empty your browser cache if you're experiencing any problems. And please report any errors etc in this thread. Cheers, ~m2
  6. I'm trying to edit the success logic for my Objectives, and every time I type something into the "Logic for Difficulty Level 2" fields and hit OK, it disappears. Is this normal?
  7. WTF problem number 4: I have a very simple "Do NOT kill entity sykes" objective. It's set to Mandatory and Ongoing, with a quantity of 1 (also tried 0). Yet when I go ahead and kill the specific AI, the objective does not fail. Likewise, when I dump his body in the spot it's supposed to go, that doesn't register either. I've double and triple-checked that the name is correct, and I can't think of anything else that could be the problem. Are there any developer tools that could help me figure out why these objectives aren't working?
  8. I can't login to Steam forums. Please visit the Thief release threads and mention TDM Thanks!

I'm using the CD with TG, T2 and T3 on it. Darkloader doesn't like it. I can't get TG FMs to work

      Sir Taffsalot

I assume it works with a TG only CD

  10. I assume that any visible objectives marked "Satisfied at start" would show up as checked on the objectives screen when starting a map. Is this not the case? I'm not seeing checkmarks. Thanks.

It will be really cool if a super talented editor like Gaetane will try TDM.

I really hope this one :-D

(and also Sterlino another editor that a like a lot)

  11. target_tdm_addobjectives is now atdm:target_addobjectives and target_tdm_addobjectives is in deprecated. The objectives editor does not yet recognize atdm:target_addobjectives but creates target_tdm_addobjectives (at least in my version.) So this wants to go on tracker unless it's already done in a future version of DR. Meanwhile, presumably both work in existing maps but mappers cannot edit their objectives if the map has been adjusted presumably with fixup. (I see no objectives in Chalice for instance in the editor but presumably they still work.) But if they haven't used fixup then they probably can still see the objectives in the editor but should eventually use fixup. OK, for now I'll rename the one I'm working on so I can edit it then rename it back. Mappers please note.
  12. Awesome. The forums support transparency in avatars. :)

  13. I never liked much the Objective system of `Thief' (hides), I find somewhat strange that a mission fails because I cannot find the 90% of the loot or because I had to kill someone (if it is not explained as important story-wise). On the other hand I always found interesting the Tie Fighter way: you have the `Primary Objectives' that are necessary to win, the `Secondary Objectives' known and useful to having a better victory and finally the `Bonus Objectives' that are a surprise: the player while doing the mission must understand what can improve the victory even more. An example of mission (with 1103 gold) objective sheet in this idea might be: Primary: - Find the gold bar; - Once done return where you started. Secondary: - Do not kill anyone; - Find at least 1000 gold in loot. Bonus: - Do not KO anyone; - Find the Fabulous Scepter of Goldness. Of course the difficulty level might still change AI attention, number of guards, ect... What do you think?
  14. I have an objective that requires the player to go somewhere, but there's actually more than one place they could go to satisfy it. How would I go about making that kind of objective? Right now I've set up an "item is in location" objective, with the player as the "item". But the only options for "Location" are "name of single entity", "No specifier" or "Group Identifier (component specific)". I'm not sure which of those, if any would allow me to specific more than one location. Can I make separate brushes in the necessary places and then combine them into a single objective_location entity?
  15. I miss the brown borders dividing up the sub forums. This great big block of grey looks ugly.
