  1. The website seems a little slow in recent hours.

  2. In this hypothetical scenario Embraces Group puts you in charge of the creative team in charge of creating a new Thief game. You don't have to do any coding or any of the complicated boring bits and what you say goes. What would the games plot be? Would it be a sequel? prequel? reboot or maybe something else? What new features would be in the game that we haven't seen before in Thief or The Dark Mod? Can't think of any more question right now but I'm sure you'll have your own interesting ideas beyond anything I've asked.
  3. Version 3.14.15926 General Changes: Added a new game mode where all AI are replaced with clowns. All loot items now make a "boing" sound when picked up. All in-game text has been translated to Pig Latin. Players now have a 50% chance of slipping on banana peels. Guards now have a 50% chance of sneezing, alerting nearby enemies. AI Changes: Guards now randomly break into song and dance numbers. Thieves now occasionally stumble and trip over themselves, making them easier for guards to catch. Zombies now wear silly hats. Level Design Changes: The player's objective is now to steal a giant rubber chicken from a noble's mansion. All buildings in the game world now have exaggerated, cartoonish proportions. The game now takes place entirely in a giant ball pit. Audio Changes: All sound effects have been replaced with foley sounds created by mouth noises. The soundtrack now exclusively features kazoo covers of popular songs. Bug Fixes: Fixed a bug where players could get stuck in a wall by crouching and jumping repeatedly. Fixed a bug where players could "swim" through the air by rapidly jumping while falling. Fixed a bug where the AI would sometimes try to speak in emojis.
  4. I spent the morning aligning my windows inside and out with the wall brick textures, but after saving and dmap, it still looks off in-game. It's quite bizarre. I tried deleting the .cm and .proc, and running dmap again (several times) but it didn't help. I don't have any dmap errors either. Any ideas what is going on? additional info: rather than adjusting the textures I edited the brushes, grabbed all the relevant vertices and adjusted the height of the window recesses. On the outside of the house I moved the window facades. Everything is appears to be aligned perfectly in DR, but is way off when I run the game.
  5. Bachelor Mapping Challenge!

The girlfriend will be away to her mum's place for almost a week, which means more mapping time for me! I'm planning a speed build. Hope it will go my way :)

I'm starting by downloading 2.11. Don't know if I'm going to use any fancy new stuff. Just want to crack those itching map muscles that has gone dry and dead since almost a year's worth of no-mapping :)

Snap is complete garbage. Another useless me-too duplicate project by Canonical that nobody else will ever use and will hopefully go the same way as Mir once Canonical come to their senses and start using FlatPak like everybody else.

Linux mint also banned Snap afaik.

But personally I'm not a fan of Flatpack either. Appimage is much nicer. You put the file on any drive and run it.

Although I'm running a rolling distro, so it's less needed.

  7. (I apologize for the odd poll question layout. I wasn't able to add five yes-no questions, because polls are limited to three questions.) Hi everyone, I've recently been working on some patches for issues that I've read about from players on the TDM and TTLG forums — and Discord. My goal is to make it as easy as possible for players, especially new players and those who need usability/accessibility options, to find what they need in order to have a better TDM experience. I've already written the GUI and game engine code for these settings, which I've been using in my personal build. The reason for this poll and discussion is to both guide the finalization of my work and collect data to help inform the dev team. Which patches I submit depend on the outcome of this poll, discussion, and what the dev team agrees to accept. Once decided, I can coordinate with the dev team. I've attached screenshots of what the new settings menu would look like if all of the settings are accepted. Below, I have detailed each menu setting, so you can have an easier time understanding each one. Very important to keep in mind: None of these settings change TDM default behavior. They are all opt-in. If you are already happy with the behavior of 2.10, 2.11, etc. and these menu settings are accepted, nothing will change for you. Rename "Always Run" to "Run Mode" with options "None, Always, Toggle" After 2.11 was released, @i30817 requested that "toggle run" be added to the settings menu. Its cvar is already in TDM as "in_toggleRun" (same as Doom 3). I propose renaming the "Always Run" setting to "Run Mode" with options: "None", "Always", and "Toggle". None = in_alwaysRun 0; in_toggleRun 0 Always = in_alwaysRun 1; in_toggleRun 0 Toggle = in_alwaysRun 0; in_toggleRun 1 Show Blackjack Helper @Wellingtoncrab suggested that the new blackjack helper be added to the settings menu. Its cvar was added to 2.11 as "tdm_blackjack_indicate". More info: It's the new blackjack helper added to 2.11. When the game detects that the blackjack can be used for a successful hit or KO, the blackjack will rise slightly. I propose a "Yes/No" setting for this. Slider for "View: Head Bob" @ChronA requested a way to disable head bobbing, because a viewer watching him play was having severe motion sickness. Also, there was a bug in TDM that made setting the head bob in the console not stick after loading a saved game. (Even with 2.11, if a mission overrides the "tdm_player_thief.def" file and sets "pm_bobroll", "pm_bobpitch", "pm_bobup", and other cvars, it will override player preferences.) As far back as 2008, players have had trouble setting head bob. Another one from 2018. At the end of 2022, @Shadowex3 registered just to voice the need for a way to control head bob. I propose that a slider be added to adjust the amount of head bob. This would use a new "pm_headbob_mod" cvar with a value between 0.0 and 1.0 (default 1.0, no change). The "pm_headbob_mod" would be a multiplier for "pm_bobroll", "pm_bobpitch", and "pm_bobup". The advantage to this approach is that missions like Volta 2 and Hazard Pay would not need to adjust their "tdm_player_thief.def" files for head bob to work properly. And, the player can still adjust "pm_bobroll", "pm_bobpitch", and "pm_bobup" as they like. Slider for "View: Mantle Roll" This is similar to head bob for those who are sensitive to motion. Its cvar was added to 2.11 as "pm_mantle_roll_mod". A Thief player on Discord said, "2.11 will have a cvar to tune down the mantling animation at last." I propose that a slider be added for "pm_mantle_roll_mod". Auto-Search Bodies @Zaratul requested the "auto-search bodies" feature from Thief 1 & 2. Its cvar was added to 2.12 dev16783-10307 as "tdm_autosearch_bodies". I did a poll on the a Thief Discord server and roughly 20% of players there use the Thief auto-search bodies feature. I propose a menu setting for this, so that players coming from Thief 1 & 2 can easily find it.
  8. Fm idea (braindump)

"Experience the life of a mission builder"

Esentially there are finnished elements placed somewhere in storage in the game and you have to place them in the correct places, build some walls here and there, add guard routes, give them their correct speech lines, etc. Decorate the places.. all in-game. lots of fun.. 😉

If you do it right in the end you can play the mission.

(would be even cooler if a thief-ai could play the mission, making it some kind of tower-defence game)

This first started as an idea for an aquarium builder mission where-in you have to fill an empty aquarium with sand, waterplants, castles water and swimming fish. But above idea is more fun.

      I thought about using:

      Quote
      • location Object in location brush (using info_tdm_objective_location brush)
A particular item must be in a particular location, defined by an info_tdm_objective_location brush. For optimization reasons, the entity or entities to be checked must also have this spawnarg: "objective_ent" set to "1". NOTE: Multiple objects in a single location are not counted up for this component, this is a single-shot objective. If you want the player to put more than one object in a location, you must currently create several of these components, specifying by name, and AND them together in the objective logic.

      https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Objectives#Non-AI_Components

It's probably not literally creating the whole mission, but more finishing it by adding doors, furniture, lights, ai, build (some) walls by stacking stones. You could have fake leaks that you have to repair.

This might just interest a whole new group of gamers. 😉

  9. https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Briefing#Controlling_Where_the_Player_Starts On the section about "Controlling Where the Player Starts" there is a download link, but it's a dead link. Does somebody have this altered mainmenu_briefing.gui ? Or otherwise, is there a mission where it's used? I thought maybe it could be added to core, to the same file, but have that section editted out by default, or make a renamed version? Same for Button Controlled Animated Briefing and Timed Flowing Briefing (although maybe without the example images), I think they should be things in core. Doesn't take up much space and then they never get lost. Edit: Testmap: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YQQknGlVJE9TJyItE_H2KjggvrIAuhnf/view?usp=sharing (with working self-made test mainmenu_briefing.gui file) When you start normal startlocation is near sand-sack. When in last frame of briefing you klick on text, mission starts near bucket oposite of room instead. Currently only works up to TDM 2.09
  10. Dear ChatGPT, What are The Builders in the Dark Mod?

The Builders is a popular game mode in the video game community called "Dark Mod," which is a fan-made tribute to the classic "Thief" series of stealth games. In this game mode, players assume the role of builders who construct structures in a dark and ominous environment while trying to avoid detection by patrolling guards.

The Builders game mode is unique in that it offers players the opportunity to create and design their own levels using the in-game tools and resources provided. Players can experiment with different building materials, construct intricate traps and puzzles, and create their own unique gameplay experiences.

While The Builders game mode is not an official part of the Dark Mod, it has become one of the most popular and well-loved aspects of the game, thanks to its emphasis on creativity, strategy, and stealth.

You guys did not know that, did you?

After seeing 2 different versions of the Builders blocks (the mission by Jesps and an asset made by @MirceaKitsune that I can't find anymore), I'm now intriguiged about a new in-game Builder game.

Btw. You should ask about maps. Because there are 2 types of maps in TDM (map file and in-game navigation map).

  11. Sadly, since "In Plain Sight" in 2022 08.07. there was no more new fan missions available in the Missions section of "thedarkmod.com". Is there any specific reason for this ? Is no one producing new missions anymore? Greetings Martin
  12. For those wondering how to use the slow match to ignite something: Take the slow match out of your inventory using "Drop Inv. Item" key. That puts the slow match into your "hands". Physically touch the slow match to what you want to ignite, such as a candle. The "Parry/Manipulate" key can help. To put the slow match back into your inventory, use the "Use Inv. Item" key. Originally, I tried to use the slow match using the "Use Inv. Item" key while a candle was frob-highlighted, but it did nothing. I was confused, and my web searching found no info on how to use it properly. Also, the wiki doesn't have instructions yet: https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Slow_match

Hey @nbohr1more Media page on website is borked:

      https://www.thedarkmod.com/media/

(it looks like the Nextgen gallery plugin doesn't work anymore sitewide)

Edit: Ah somebody seems to be working on it now. I wonder why a description list is used though..

Having a lightbox + slideshow plugin would be a good idea.

Maybe it's also good to upload some more (recent) screenshots and/or other media? We could make some sort of competition and the highest ratest screenshots will be placed on the media page? This could also influx some more TDM play (of 2.11).

  15. We are proud to announce the release of: The Dark Mod 2.11 ! The Dark Mod 2.11 is primarily a bug-fix release. The majority of development time was dedicated to fixing or improving long-standing bugs or problem areas with the project rather than focusing on new features. That said, some of the improvements that were introduced to address these issues could very well be classified as new features in terms of the amount of changes required to bring them to life. A full changelog can be viewed here, but some highlights include: Major gameplay improvements! For players, Stealth Score and AI alert behavior has been improved to better detect tactile contact with AI and proximity. An older TDM release introduced a grace period feature that was overly broad and made some AI ignore players that were right in front of them. This has been substantially improved so stealth scoring and AI reactions should be a lot more consistent and logical. Players will also have a new Blackjack experience with better cues about whether a blackjack attack will succeed and improvements to the way that the blackjack attack is executed. Players can more smoothly transition from climbing as the player is now permitted to be crouched during the climb. There is a new multi-loot feature which allows you to pickup multiple loot pieces by holding down the frob button! Performance Improvements! The new volumetric light feature has been improved via a new blur phase. This means that you no longer need to increase the samples to reduce or remove banding and performance should be substantially improved. Before 2.10 ( dithering and low sample count): After 2.11 ( blurred and higher default sample count ) : Soft Shadows now utilize scissors and tile-based evaluation in stencil mode so that Anti-Aliasing no longer need be applied to the entire shadow buffer. Shadow Maps have improved mipmap, LOD and texel utilization. There should be fewer artifacts and better performance. Large models are now evaluated via a BVH structure so that they can be split for lighting and culling optimizations. AI think cycles have been optimized and perform less work per-frame. GLSL programs have been rewritten to have better performance on AMD graphic cards. Included mission improvements! Mission 1: A New Job now features subtitles! Mission 2: Tears of Saint Lucia has been improved with EFX reverb and a few bug fixes! Asset fixes and additions! Dragofer has fixed hundreds of assets that were missing setup definitions or other components that would cause the console to flood with errors on TDM launch or on the launch of missions. In addition, he has added hundreds of new and old assets from both TDM team members and members of the TDM community. Improvements for Mappers! The Engine now supports Obj model format Material Shaders no longer require you to add frob stages. Frob is now auto-generated. You can still add custom frob effects to materials if preferred Missions can now include decls that override those in the core TDM without using an override file to replace the entire core file. GUI scripting has been overhauled with better syntax and error reporting Dmap precision has been increased and Dmap T-junction performance has been optimized Please see our Moddb article for the full developer blog entry: https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod/news/the-dark-mod-211-is-here To update, simply run the tdm_installer.exe file in your darkmod folder. Note that tdm_update.exe is no longer supported, but you can download the new installer from the Downloads page if you don't have it yet. Please be aware that old saved games will not be compatible with 2.11, so finish any missions you might be in the middle of first!

  20. AMD 6xxx users, there are some credible reports that the latest WHQL driver "Adrenalin 22.11.2" is allowing the GPU to damage itself due to either thermal or electrical variance. Revert your driver or enforce power \ thermal limits where possible.

Sounds like you're safe to me.

Everyone should probably be under-volting AMD anyway from what I've heard.
The story goes that they push the voltage up to ensure that bad silicon has a better chance of testing at the rated clocks so they will have more chips to sell. I'm sure it's an industry wide practice but I imagine consumers would rather that bad silicon get sold at lower prices with lower clocks (etc) than pushing all chips to the brink just so they can squeeze out 10% more high-end sales.

Do you remember the "AMD Killer" event? It's like Nvidia and AMD are trying to give the new Intel ARC very little competition to do that again, but...No, I really doubt it that this time one company or the other is doing an incredibly scummy (yet typical of every corporation) tactic to defile its competitors. This time, it's absurd incompetence from both Nvidia (4090 and 4070 Ti) and AMD (Not even the 7900's new thermals are good)

    4. lowenz

      lowenz

There's no need to undervolt, just set a lower power limit. The current is the killer if the physical problem is the overheat and not some capacitor/dielectric explosion (that's how voltage damage works, errors apart due to how undervolting practices makes computation/processing unstable)

  22. Hey everyone! I discovered the Dark Mod back in 2017 and as a fan of the original Thief 1 game, I instantly became a fan of this Mod's gameplay style and amazing content! This is my first post here so excuse this short intro, I just wanted to thank everyone that made this mod possible and for continuing working on it. I was wondering, has anyone tried to see if Nvidia's latest tech, REMIX can be applied on the mod? It looks SO promising!
  23. Happy new year!

I thought that I wouldn't like "House of the dragon" because I didn't like the ending of the predecessors.

I am now pleasantly surprised; until episode 7 the focus is on dialogues, I like it very much...besides, I am now allergic to all the violence orgies. I can't take it anymore.

All this senseless violence in Westworld, Game of Thrones, Colony, Walking Dead...or maybe there is something wrong with me anymore.

@chakkman JackFarmer said he didn't like the ending of the predecessors, which I interpreted to mean he didn't like how Game of Thrones ended, a view I strongly agree with. In my case that doesn't mean I don't like Game of Thones, hell I was a big fan at the time... at least until the final season. The way the series ended just destroyed any sense of rewatchability given all the fan theories and drip-fed mysteries basically accounted to nothing and so much character development was ultimately wasted. That was my fear with House of the Dragon but it sounds like it's decent enough to give it a shot.

    3. chakkman

      chakkman

@Xolvix Ah, I overlooked the "ending". Ok, but, I don't think the last season was so much more violent and brutal than the rest of the series. Of course, there is some violent stuff in the series overall, but, hey, middle age fantasy and stuff. I even think it added to the series. Just "fits" the Game of Thrones theme somehow.

The last season was definitely bullshit, but not for the violence. Already in the first episode, I wonder WTH the makers smoked to bring such uninspired and absolutely not fitting the rest of the series stuff. I even stopped watching after eipsode 3, and skipped the rest, because I didn't want to spoilt the series as a whole. That's how bad I think it was. As if someone hired a high school kid as a story writer for the last season.

    4. Xolvix

      Xolvix

Game of Thrones fell off the rails because the two guys behind the show were excellent at adapting stories already written for them by George R.R. Martin. They weren't so good once they ran out of book material and had to come up with new stories though.

Interestingly the violence never put me off when watching Game of Thrones, but I can certainly understand when someone gets fed up with excessive violence being used in a lot of media and they just want something a bit less brutal. I feel the same way occasionally, it can get exhausting.
