How to build a roof:

Someone mentioned in another thread (re: my attic space) that in medieval houses the slats that the tiles were attached to could be seen from the inside:

Like: http://wiki.diyfaq.org.uk/index.php?title=Image:TilesRow2.jpg ... but without the black insulation.

(Google comes up with this: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3037/2867609417_c59f314b74.jpg?v=0 )

I didn't have all these little slats as I thought it a performance drag, only the vertical rafters and 3 horizontal supporting ones (purlins, apparently), but maybe it still would have been a good idea to put some stucco or some other texture on the inside of the tiles brush (so it looks like the equivalent of that black bedding) rather than just the backsides of the individual tiles themselves (which look unattached).

Anyway, something to think about.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

This makes me smile as it's my job! I'm a carpenter (principally shuttering but I've done my share of roofing).

The tile batten on old buildings can seen inside in England, I worked for a specialist restoration firm years ago and on a mediaeval mill we worked on, we had to make batten using split willow and then hung the tiles with oak pegs.

In Scotland though, mainly because of inclement weather, a layer of thin boards known as sarking was always put on first to seal the roof.

What that wiki didn't show was pagoda roofs.

Here's one I built, (I did the concrete columns and beam on this as well.) :D

Yes, I think the basic beam structure goes back a long way but with different lining materials. It reminded me I used the lathe and plaster texture for under the tiles and support brushes on top of that. This is one I did way back and is still waiting to be finished. Not lit or furnished yet but an interesting attic space...

Yeah, that is really nice work there, Biker. Very "conservatory" indeed. :)

finished

Ah, good. You are able to call it finished (at least this room, which I understand is only this room). As mentioned, it looks excellent. Completely complete.

The way you've been talking I was getting the idea you'd never be able to stop tinkering and we'd maybe never see your mission.

Much as I love adding detail and other ideas to the map, today I got the "god I want to finish this thing" and got a pang of depression because I haven't done any readable, objectives or a story line..yet. I did reach a milestone though, getting max fps everywhere bar 1 location is big plus for me. Not only will people get to see all the detail i have put in, but those who have low end systems wont see any slowdown.

That's great, Biker.

Now as anxious as I am to get in those caves and crawl out of that hole in the brick wall and sit down at that table in the conservatory... just relax.

You aren't working for anyone, you aren't supposed to be working at all. If you need to step away, step away. Come back and do the readables, objectives and story when you are inspired to do so.

.. just try not to take a month to get inspired ;)

Maybe a week? Two weeks?

Great. I've actually been contemplating a Japanese styled FM for a long time, so it'd be nice to see the design prints for this kind of architecture.

Believe it or not, the most famous thief in medieval Japanese history, Goemon, actually lived in an apartment at the top of a gate like this, though more massive of course (big enough to fit an apartment at the top). His name literally means "Fifth Gate". So I want to do an FM of his story... I'll need a lot of architectural guidance (and probably textures, objects, and skins) to pull it off, though, but hopefully there's a lot of asset overlap as well.

Nice, I want to build a Himalayan mission with temples etc, I might be in touch, (when/if work dies off in the autumn).

The engineering drawings I got for that roof where crap, so I built a scale model which let me see where the tricky bits were.

I did some sections in TurboCad, (and lived and breathed that gate for 9 months ).

So let me know if you want anything.

Have you read Mushasi by Eiji Yoshikawa?

Provided the visLeafs stay sealed, of course...

Cool. I was just thinking of using photo sources, but that's gotten me in trouble before, lol, especially for the complex stuff (especially for a layman!). But anyway, this probably wouldn't be for a long while yet, but I'll keep your offer in mind if/when I get to it. Thanks!

Nope. I'll look into it. Thanks again.

One other thing worth mentioning (as I found out (with help) when I made my timbers as a newbie) is this. Don't make a beam and rotate it into position. You can find slight misalignments and the joins in three dimensions (where you have a V shape plus another beam coming out also at an angle in that plane but also angled in the other direction) can be even worse if not impossible. Instead, make a big solid and use the clipper tool to cut out your angles (obviously you can clone beams in the same alignment.) This also applies to the roofs. This way your beams will be flush with the underside of the roof and all beams will abutt correctly and you get to keep your hair.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
